    This was the first video I’d ever seen of a tölting horse, about a decade ago. Now we’re four horses in and tölt is the most normal gait in the world (but still very special)!

    With the flying pace the legs on the same side work together (ie go forward together) as opposed to other gaits where the legs on opposite sides work together.

    i don't know if this question was answered for you outside of here but some icelandic horses are unable to reach a flying tolt so if they haven't they just might not be able to

  • @BlackieLadida
    @BlackieLadida9 жыл бұрын

    Emily Fritz To get the horse in flying pace you must start at a gallop. Some horses can from trot. Step down firmly on one stirrup to create an imbalance, and if the horse has learned flying pace with rider that will make the horse pace. It's very uncomfortable to sit on!

  • @tmrmilano
    @tmrmilano8 жыл бұрын

    +Svarteoslizzom could you explain how that gait is uncomfortable? The rider is virtually stationary. And a slow progression, from walk to tolt, then extending the gait, maintaining collection, is the way achieve that gait, although not all Icelandics will achieve this sort of speed in gait.

  • @BlackieLadida
    @BlackieLadida8 жыл бұрын

    +tmrmilano If you are starting to train a horse or ride a young horse, the pace is kind of like beeing on a small boat in bad weather. Since I told someone who had never ridden pace before, I told her what to expect. Also, in icelandic horse competitions here in Norway, they always start pace from gallop or trot. I have ridden icelandic horses for 15 years.

    +Hayden Hall Pads are actually forbidden in sport by the FEIF, the international federation for Icelandic horses! It's not a sport if you start adding all kinds of silly things to make a horse do a certain gait, either it can do it and you can do all kinds of training (without said silly things) to make that gait better, or it can't. :)

    They do tolt naturally, but sadly, like the Tennessee Walking Horses, they can be forced to look even fancier.... this horse in particular is "winging" out. Not natural, as far as I've seen. Judging by the "grin" on the horse's face, I wouldn't say he's too pleased about it. I'm all for the natural version, though--- go tolt!!!

    Usually they have it from birth and they start displaying it at different ages! Some icelandic horses don't really tölt alot naturally, they prefer trot, whilst some would rather tölt than trot! I own two icelandic horses, one of them naturally does both trot and tölt easily and well and is comfortable with both. But my other one is all tölt, trying to get him to trot while riding can take a long time, tölt comes so natural for him it's the trotting that takes training!

    @SammYScenester What kind of terrain do you expect to find for much of the year in Iceland? Those little horses have thrived in Iceland for many, many centuries without any outside influence from other breeds. That isolation in such an extreme environment has allowed them to adapt to the conditions. They are supremely suited for swift travel over ice and snow in the winter and broken ground in the summer. Of course, specialized shoes that improve grip help, too.

    Wow I'd like to have a go at tolting, it looks pretty fast too :-) They do look kind of silly with long-legged men on them but I guess they are mostly like 14hh max? I hear you can get them up to about 15hh. I just wonder as I'm almost 6ft myself...

  • @annarmillner
    @annarmillner7 жыл бұрын

    ARC they're not 15hh. That's very huge for an Icelandic. Icelandics are often considered ponies and usually they can be 10hh to 14hh.

    Gorgeous! I call these horses "buglegs." The tölt is kind of like dancing the twist! My French spouse I taught to ride adored these horses but liked them best at full gallop! There is no way these horses should be able to do this on such harsh terrain, but they go and go. It's just normal for them and with basic care and attention they are fine. They are much appreciated in Germany, too. They sure are hard to catch, however!

    I knew a horse that does that but if you pull her back she canters or trots or walks. if you get her to rack and you keep pushing her she goes faster and faster and faster i was never able to find out how fast she can go cuz the pony we ran with always went out of veiw and we came to the end of the road before i come open her up : / (it was a longggg freaking road to and the pony we raced was like 13.2hh and the rackin horse was about 16hh and all legs so it wasnt very hard to leave him behind.
