The scene is full of details. Batman notices that the Joker is more concerned with checking if he's out of ammo rather than realizing his gun is fake, suggesting that he's purposely losing and that his obsession has gone too far. He tries one last time to reason with him and to determine if it’s still right to let him live, and the final joke is the last thing he can bear. So, he killed him (or so we think)

I think most people got this one wrong Joker explains in the joke. "What, do you think im stupid? youll just switch off the light when im half way across". Hes refering to batman, giving up on him half way through trying to rehabilitate him... Thats the true meaning.

Those two... Batman could have been Joker, Joker could have been Batman. Both broken... Different choices... Too late for either of them to turn back.

Love how it leaves on a Miyazaki style cliffhanger between batman and joker. Only in this case it's, did batman take joker back to the asylum, did one die??

The joke is such a clever and gut-wrenching way to portray how truly tragic being “insane” is. The first guy jumps across, no problem. The second guy is afraid; he can’t do it, not because he’s insane, but because he’s human. When the first guy shines the light, it’s his attempt to help the second guy cross the gap, one human helping another. The second guy refuses to cross, not because the light bridge is preposterous, but because he doesn’t trust his friend, which is yet another very normal and relatable thing to do. Of course, it doesn’t matter how much Guy 2 trusts Guy 1, because flashlights can’t make bridges. Living with severe mental conditions that alter perception is exactly like that. Everyone has to deal with things like being afraid of heights and not being able to trust others. It’s just how life is. However, it’s downright impossible to get through those struggles of life when your perception of reality is fundamentally and drastically different from other people, which is why people with conditions that alter perception just can’t have the same freedoms other people have without risk to themselves and others. It’s horrible and unfair, and it’s why our mental institutions and the general attitudes we harbor towards people with these conditions desperately need to change; it’s implied that Batman kills Joker, and I believe that it’s because that’s the only way to truly free him from the constant cycle of Arkham Asylum, an underfunded and miserable place that will never be enough to make Joker well. Fantastic scene.

"It's far too late for that." Joker also knows his disease got far enough to make it there's no pure cure for that. Joker also knows, there's no way to get rid of that sickness. To me; in that moment jokers shows his real personality to show Bruce it's to late for him. Joker is a regular guy back then, he has a wife unborn child and someone care about. But life make him more crazy. He already got insane but at least joker knows it has to be stop and tells batman there's no chance for him to come back as normal. So, batman also got the sign and make it stop.

In the comic you get the feeling that Batman might have killed the Joker at the end of it but they did a good job here too.

Goddamn, man, this scene just DESTROYED ME emotionally. Batman offering Joker a helping hand, the hoplessness of Joker WANTING HELP but knowing he's already done so much evil that cannot be taken back, THE FUCKING JOKE AND BRUCE HAVING THE LAST LAUGH BECAUSE HE TOO KNOWS HE'S INSANE. Brb gonna go cry in a corner.

There’s a theory as to why Joker stopped laughing. It’s said to be because Batman ends up snapping his neck in the end. And it honestly makes a lot of sense considering how Batman even says that the only way it could end between them is with one of them dead.
