    Not a CFA but have the work hours previously in banking, and writing Level 2 next month. Wouldn’t bother if you want to get into Investment Banking right out of school. Focus on interviewing and internships, extra curricular’s such as case comps, and grades with finance major. At most, CFA level 1 in your last year of University if you already have an offer and are a real hardo. CFA helps if you want to work in a director role in any area of finance/banking, and may be necessary if you want to work in portfolio management. CFA can be great if you don’t work IB hours but want to strengthen your knowledge and resume in addition to your job.

    I dont understand why people constantly overlap IB with the CFA. Being an active player in this space, the designation is most active in traditional AM roles in PM. If you're younger, I'd suggest you go for the designation. You'll make the time for networking, studying and working. Plus the CFA journey weeds out a lot of undisciplined people quickly.

    My dad was an MD at a BB. I disagree with you. Getting a CFA is one of the best ways to develop a professional designation in finance, especially for people with otherwise no experience in the field. In fact, most analyst programs will put you through level I in your first year.

    Hi! I'm not so sure about this since my experience is only in the US. I'd say it's likely best to get an MBA in the country you want to become an investment banker. I had several Indian colleagues that worked in NYC bulge brackets after doing their MBA's in the US

    you’re a freak in excel. always have had an interest in the IB culture and always here about “modeling”. Would love a video breaking down a simplified version of a modeling exercise an analyst might get as an assignment with commentary and explanations of the information you start with, the goal of the model, how you know it’s done etc.

    Great to see you making content again. Great advice here, I like the piece about deliberately assessing your personal layoff risk periodically while at a job. Not something I’d thought to deliberately do but being aware of this risk lets you prepare for the possibility and try to gradually mitigate the risk by making yourself less dispensable (or appear less dispensable anyway). I’ve seen a few rounds of layoffs and it seems like having a low salary is the best defense to being laid off lol Im in public accounting so I always like the excel content. Covid and WFH destroyed the baseline excel skills I can expect from people hired after 2020. they weren’t mouse shamed like we were so they’re all mouse, it’s painful to watch!

  • @PeterHoilKang
    @PeterHoilKang5 ай бұрын

    Really appreciate the thoughtful comment and for welcoming me back! LOL at low salary as defense. Definitely has and aspect of truth to it. "Mouse Shamed" HAHA - never heard it phrased that way. Totally agree -- COVID / WFH destroyed a lot of the "passing of the torch" from one wave of talent to the next - for both better and worse. Stay tuned! More content to come :)

    Dumb question: what are the rules around three piece suits?

  • @PeterHoilKang
    @PeterHoilKang6 ай бұрын

    Oh I thought I responded to this! Think I forgot to click reply. As a general rule of thumb, a more junior person should aim to be slightly the most professional / muted dressed. A three piece suit could fit into the same category as pocket squares, embroidered button downs, French cuffs, pocket squares, and Rolex watches - overly gaudy or flashy. It may some seem out of place or odd in many offices too (too wedding-y?). Depending on the three piece suit, you could just remove the vest if it feels off. A lot of 3 piece suits have a different look to start with though. In most offices, people will likely just tease you or rag on you a bit and not much else. Small chance someone with an ego actually dings you in their head or calls you out negatively. Hope this helps!

    Well this was a big waste of time. If you use Clubhouse in the title, you really need to give your opinion of why something great, with legions of fans, but also some real issues - like not listening to hosts and users -became a basket case and is dying a slow death!

    Ah sorry you feel that way, Steve. Wasn't trying to clickbait or mislead, but I totally feel you. I wish I could be much more blunt about my thoughts on product and corporate strategy, but unfortunately my hands are a bit tied for now. This video was part of my processing of my time there, in hopes of distilling some of the lessons I learned into something productive for me and others. Some time down the road, I'll get more of my specific takes out there. Appreciate the feedback!

    worth it if you're the 1 in a 100 people who will actually succeed in passing the 3 levels before obtaining the CFA. If you're unsure, you're way better doing an MBA and doing internships as the guy in the video's saying

    @@2255. Congrats if you passed it bro. but do not say it's not hard. It is very hard, and the dedication it takes will be the hardest one in your life. I truly believe it's a wonderful certification to have, but it belongs to the Elite only. So for most people hesitating between an MBA and the CFA, I'd say go for the MBA 100%, as you will get tremendous benefits from the MBA only. And you will save SO much time. And even make friends!
