Yep it's borked, ain't supposed to stick like that and then squeak as it leaps back to the neutral position. Can you even lube the clutch assembly?

Just brought my 2009 Maser QP 4.7 home from dealer repair. I'v had this car since new. The variator was not making weird noise (yet) but i did not wanna hav it die when i'm in the middle of nowhere with no Maserati shop so i fixed it at my local Maserati dealer with TEM variator. The test drive was 109 miles mostly highway. The car cruised smooth n quiet with plenty power. It even used only 1/4 tank for 109 miles. I am HAPPY bcoz nothing out there can replace my 2009 Maserati QP 4.7; natural aspirated V8 Ferrari engine, Pininfarina design, built by Ferrari (Luca di Montezemolo, no less), Ferrari exhaust, seats 5...i love my Maser! Now it can go as far as i want to go & hard as i want w/out variator worries. 💖

I have spoken to many Masi technicians! My 08 GT has a VIN that wasn't fixed for this problem $$$$$. When starting it up, don't let it fire! Turn the key before it cranks to get the oil up on the top side! Try it???

Had this on my Granturismo. The belt was slipping on the airco pulley and the pulley had to be replaced. They also fixed a coolant leak behind the manifolds. That was the main reason for bringing the car in. Total cost was about €4000-€5000 at authorised dealer in Belgium.

If you don't have it you should look into the Formula Dynamics module. In MC-S mode mine cracks right between gears.

I have the same model car and same problem, have no warranty and l wonder if another Italian car shop know how to fix that or do l have to go to dealer? It’s been louder by times. Would need some help to figure it out please! Thank you!

I took mine to the dealer and luckily it was still under warranty. It is definitely a tedious and time consuming job. I would go to the dealer and at least get an estimate.

The oil pressure to the variators would bleed down from sitting overnight and when you would start it it would rattle until the oil pressure increased. The dealer replaced the variators and sent out the front cam caps to have oil check valves installed by a certified Ferrari repair center.

This design flaw is the onus of Maserati. Maserati Technicians get 8 hours Flat rate/ Book Rate to do this repair with timing preserved. All parts, out sourcing to the only Certified Machine Shop to instal the check valves, the two new variators, Tear down, re build, oil change, filter change, etc.... Total is close to $8k through Maserati. Valuable customer retention for satisfaction and brand loyalty.

Hi. I tried today with 22mm socket I bought, it seems to small. Could it be 24mm? I assume the tab washer over the nut doesn't come off. Cheers.

have you lowered the car at all? I have the front coiler jammed between the upper and lower control arms and can't access any of the arm bolts to unjam it.

Indy's won't touch Masi camshaft variators. Maserati sends them off to have them machined and then install them.

Mine was only making the noise on start up. After a few seconds the noise would stop and would not happen again until the next cold start.
