Deer Habitat Management Techniques
Deer Habitat Management Techniques
This channel is about all things forestry and wildlife habitat, mostly whitetail deer habitat improvement. If you are interested in adding value to your land and making a better place to hunt, you can find some good free advice here.
I am a masters level Forester trained at Penn State University, as SAF certified professional Forester AND a licensed Realtor in the State of Pa.
As a Forestry and Wildlife Habitat Consultant in PA, I have worked on hundreds of properties throughout the Eastern U.S. Much of my work centers around timber management and food plot installations to improve carrying capacity of hunting properties.

Its looking good so far
If you don't mind can you tell us how much the tree you have your hand on is worth?
Looks like a clen but log, so if there are 250 bf in the tree its $170 -$200. If you get a veneer log out of it, could be quit a bit more

@@ChilcoteForestryServices Thank you. I'm thinking about selling some of my trees. I can appreciate that there is a lot of things to consider; where are they, how many, how far is the mill?
Lambs quarter is super bad in my plot . Also have something that looks kinda like milkweed buy I don't think it actually is ? It's not super bad but the Lambs quarter is Horrible. It chokes out everything.
Deer like it at certain times of the year. If it gets too much you can mow and spray. Perennial plots need maintenance
We have old growth forests in the Maine mountains. But this is good advice.
What is the population per acre of whitetail deer on that site?
Zero, thats why the native new forest is growing
Nope! Nope! Nope! I'll stay in the valley😅
Awesome forest land management by Chilcote Forestry....
Thanks Steve!!
wait omg are you serious? that thing looks huge
2 big ones sleeping off their night feeding
@@ChilcoteForestryServices 😕2 ? yikes
Spring Creek?
250$ per ton of lime here
Yikes, $38/ ton spread is proper.
@@ChilcoteForestryServices what would you charge to break down a soil test to let me know what all of it means
Here in Southwest Missouri- I'm prepping some ground for a plot. Moving forward, I'm thinking I'll plant BWheat mid-June, then mow & rake it mid-August. At that point, my plan is to broadcast and aerate oats, ladino clover, and cereal rye into what I'm hoping becomes a real "honey-hole". I would appreciate your thoughts regarding my plan!!!
Sounds good but i usually dont put in a monoculture. You could add a legume and brassica (collards)as well as cowpeas & sunflowers. You can fit more biomass and mine more nutrients that way. If deer eat it all, just plant a new seeding for fall (cool season plants)
That's great info Steve...good job.
The thing about corn is, it attracts lot of critters, which is exactly the point.
For a few weeks🤔
@@ChilcoteForestryServices Corn is a lot of work. Sprayed the fields twice now and the damn grass keeps on growing. Worse yet, the damn deer are eating all the corn as it grows. Idiots!!
This video is dated August 2021, so I’m interested to find out if you did interplant corn with peas on purpose and if so what’s your results?
This was interesting because the peas came from the previous cover crop that had them in it. They just decided to show up. The nutrients from the cover crop supported the corn well. Peas can be planted with corn at the same time and i would like to experiment with that
You got some good prospects going there. With all the rain things will start popping in a hurry. Got a little sun today that'll help some
Camera man defly smoked a j before this 😂
It knows there's mice and shakes the tail to bait it's prey into thinking it's a worm to eat. My 6ft boa constrictor does the same thing while she's "hunting" for prey inside her enclosure. Wiggles the colorful tail tip like a worm which in the wild would attract a bird in a tree.
That's going to be an awesome food plot
Atleast some animals are still evolving.
Not much different than how God created them
It’s not mimicking a rattlesnake. It moves it’s tail that way to either attract prey or divert predators to an expendable part of it’s body.
Nah, it sounds just like a rattlesnake when in dry leaves
If you want to have a corn food plot… Keep in mind you get out what you put in. Don’t try and be a half ass
Exactly, it takes a commitment
Lol that's so funny... Just leave him alone
Good snake to have around the house.
"Just leave him alone he'll go away".....or he'll find that 1" hole the contractor left during the construction of your house.
If the snake can get it, so can the mice. If he does get in, that’s bad news for the mice, not you.
@@jeffstorey9147 Im not entirely disagreeing with you but it depends on the species of snake. When I lived in Arizona it was usually bad news for the mice and humans if a snake got in the house considering most snakes there were venomous. A lot of people are also deathly afraid of snakes so while a lot of them aren't venomous and maybe doing good they may also scare people to act irrationally.
Spring loaded plow, got it😅😊
That is not a spring tooth harrow it is a spring loaded all purpose plow.
How about controlled burn?
With all this rain you should uave grat germination and quick. And once the sun comes out it should fly out of the ground. Cant wait to see a follow up video. Another great job by Chilcote Forestry
How many gallons per acre do you typically apply? I have heard a lot of people shoot for 15 gallons to get better coverage.
In this case 13 gallons. Thats how the sprayer is set up.
Not a good channel 2 watch. U know what is the best solution in your answer is go 2 your closest feed store and they will tell u
I don't know what u have for equipment and where your from but just go 2 your local seed dealer. I live in NE Iowa and it's difficult where u live.
@@karma8001 WTF is a feed store going to tell you about a sprayer they dont own? Whats yer problem Karma?
I did upgrade my compressor a couple years back
Filmco is the best in my opinion. 6 nozzles and fits great on my atv and utv only problem in 6 years is I wrecked going way 2 fast going to my plot and put a hole in the bottom but just used my plastic welder and welded it up
When it gets flooded and cattails are growing in middle
Calibratin sprayer
The point is to have hardwood bushes not bushes filled with pine all the a high percentage of pine should of been cut
thought it was a cow pie at first lol
Another great job by Chilcote Forestry
So is the tree still desirable to harvest?
Its ok now but will rot. Its too small now
Just found a grape vine and wanted to cut it because I thought it's a poison ivy. :) Thank you to show the vine close. Now will look how the poison ivy vine shall look like.
poison ivy is highly preferred deer food
@@ChilcoteForestryServicesNo poison ivy on my property, but still plenty of deer visiting it.
Looks nice. What is list price and are OGM’s included?
$380k and yes, its not a coal or gas area
Well one things for sure he wasn't going anywhere lmao
Didnt even flop, lights out
Good bird Stephen !
Proud murderers of nature... 😢
What have you done for wildlife? Nothing
Congratulations!
Congratulations!
How did you make out this morning?
