    @kevin4849 In the context of Quadratic functions, irrational and imaginary roots do come in pairs, both the + and - roots. The same would go with 4th roots, there were be two sets of pairs. This doesn't apply to x^2 = 0......Also, depending on context, roots may be extraneous.

  • @kevinc4849
    @kevinc48495 ай бұрын

    Irrational roots don't always come in pairs. For example, the polynomial x^3-2=0 has only one root which is the cube root of 2. Here's my question: do even-numbered irrational roots come in pairs? In other words, roots of the form A+B*(nth root of) C always come in pairs, when n is positive and even?

    it's always good to work through a problem like this in the Detailed Way. It's paying our Dues as we learn how these problems are solved. Eventually, we discover other ways to solve this problem. That second way is realizing we have Similar Triangles. That leads to a General Formula where x = (h1* R) / (h1 + h2) .. R = the distance Between the Poles, 48 in this problem. Check it out, it works.. Thank you for this classic Calculus Min/Max problem :)

  • @MrsBowsMathClass

    Yes, a constraint would be if the domain is not All Reals -infinity to +infinity). For example. If a problem resulted in two solutions, but only one of them works because maybe only positive numbers work in an applied problem.

    I don't understand how, if the two sides separately have limits towards +inf, then they collectively don't have a limit towards +inf. Where is the logic to say they DNE if both sides approach the same asymptote and are mirror images of each other or both approach either + or - infinity?

  • @MrsBowsMathClass
    @MrsBowsMathClass3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Aaron, One of the conditions for a Limit to exist is that, as you get infinitely close to an x-value (c) from both sides, you must be approaching a Real Number, and while each individual number headed towards infinity is real, since you can't land on one specific number - because you never reach infinity, the condition of a Limit has not been met. Infinity is not in the Real number set.

  • @aarontcagle
    @aarontcagle3 жыл бұрын

    Kelly Bow gotcha! But from each individual side the real number bit doesn’t matter?

  • @MrsBowsMathClass
    @MrsBowsMathClass3 жыл бұрын

    @@aarontcagle Correct. If you have a one-side limit. It isn't so much asking if a limit exists, it is asking what is the behavior (where is it headed) on that one side, so positive or negative infinity is a response that can work.
