Danavi Puzzles

Danavi Puzzles

Focusing this channel on twisty puzzle solving, which will include some tutorials, demonstration solves, walk-through solves, puzzle reviews, and more. I've been into puzzle solving since early 2013 and should emphasize that I'm not a speed cuber, but rather a puzzle solver. I admire and respect those who are into speed cubing, but for myself I most enjoy a slower solve with fewer algorithms and more intuitive steps, especially on more complex puzzles.

    They're certainly cool looking puzzles, and an interesting addition to any collection. But from a solving perspective, since they're just super megaminxes, they're a bit too simple for my taste. If they'd make gigaminx shape mods in this style, I might be a little more interested.

  • @danavipuzzles7308
    @danavipuzzles73082 күн бұрын

    I would also like to see Gigaminx versions of these, though for me, I more enjoy solving a Megaminx than a Gigaminx, unless I'm in the mood for a long solve that doesn't require too much thinking. The Gigaminx isn't much more difficult than a Megaminx, it's just very time-consuming. Vergo's Pentagram... now that's a challenging puzzle. And I continue to kick myself for having sold it a few years ago. I know that there are still stickered versions available, but I'd love to find a stickerless version again.

  • @LukeLane1984

    @@danavipuzzles7308 Yeah, gigaminx isn't difficult. I'd say easier than a 5x5x5 cube even, since there's no parity. There's just a lot more pieces to move around (same for Teraminx, I have the first mass produced MF8 one, but it's not difficult, just tedious) Though, some sort of gigaminx shape mod might be interesting. Or, as mentioned before, a tuttminx. There are just so many interesting possible shape mods/circle versions/ghost versions of existing puzzles, that I'd like to see mass produced. Regarding the Vergo Pentagram: I really wanted one, but my experiences with MF8 puzzles, especially the more complex and pricey ones have been so bad, that I decided against buying it. Companies like ShengShou, DianSheng , QiYi and YuXin have almost never let me down.

    Just got mine today and as I was experimenting with initial turns I realized how complicated this is going to be and now I'm a little wary of even scrambling it! I think I'm going to take your advice you gave below and get the 4x4 fisher first and get good at that one as the Fisher cubes aren't nearly as disorienting as the Axis.

  • @danavipuzzles7308
    @danavipuzzles730819 күн бұрын

    Indeed, it's very challenging if it's your first 4x4 shape mod. Also, I presume you can probably solve a 3x3 Axis cube. If not, you should be able to comfortably solve that first as well. And don't get discouraged with the first few solves. For me, it usually takes 10+ solves until I start to really feel comfortable with a new complicated puzzle, to a point where I scramble it with no hesitation and can solve it with confidence.

    Nice collection! I remember seeing some of your puzzles in a briefcase. Do you have stickerless skewby copter and bagua cube?. Stickerless master mixup cubes are nice. Too bad some stickerless puzzles are pillowed huh?!

  • @danavipuzzles7308
    @danavipuzzles7308Ай бұрын

    Thanks! I started with the briefcase idea around 2016. By 2019 it was 3 briefcases, and then eventually I started using shelves. But space began to run out, so I built mini shelves inside the shelves to fit more puzzles. Currently 82 puzzles in there, all cubic and stickerless, and no two are the same. There's enough room there for about 8 more. I have the stickerless Skewby Copter there, but don't have the Bagua since I have the Sun Cube which is very similar to it. There are some puzzles I've been hoping someone would release for years in stickerless form so that I can add them to the collection, and I'm surprised that no one has released them yet -- fundamentals like the Helicopter Cube, Curvy Copter, Rex Cube, Master Skewb, 1x2x3, 2x3x4, 3x4x5, etc. As for the Master Mixups, I used to have two of them, versions 1 and 4. What I didn't like about them is that they are way too big and dwarf the rest of my puzzles, even my 8x8. Plus they take way too long to properly scramble. If they ever re-release them in smaller sizes, I'd probably get versions 0 and 1. The others present more of a challenge than what I typically enjoy.

  • @danavipuzzles7308

    And yes, I'm not a fan of the pillowed puzzles, like all the recent circle cubes from Sengso, since they wouldn't fit well with my collection. I don't know why they decided to make them that way. I think most people prefer flat over pillowed.

    @@danavipuzzles7308 The master mixups are huge. I have been waiting years for the mf8 twins cube 2x2 version. • @danavipuzzles7308
    @danavipuzzles7308Ай бұрын

    @@prestonsmith3137 Yeah, it seems to take MF8 years to release puzzles they show on their boxes. Some have never been released, despite pictures of prototypes being up for like 10 years. Also, they seem to be releasing less stickerless puzzles lately. The Crazy Grilles, DeCeth, and Son-Mum 4x4, none are available as stickerless as of yet. I've emailed them with the suggestion to make them stickerless. They replied, thanking me for the suggestion, but I don't know if they will ever actually make them. As for the 4x4 circle cube by Sengso, that was based off of the 2x2 circle cube they released shortly prior. Both are cubic. And then for some strange reason they started making all the other puzzles pillowed.

    Thanks for posting this, I had completely forgotten about these handboards. I recently started following you after getting back into twisty puzzles more seriously this past Christmas when i bought a 2x2 while holiday shopping. That pulled me into the rabbit hole, but I also got back into Tech Deck finger boards a bit as well at the same time. They're nice little fidget toys, but a handboard seems like it would be way more fun to play with and learn tricks. I'm going to have to pick one up soon now that I've been reminded of them again. It's crazy how much these can go for nowadays tho. Btw, your videos have been very informative and useful for learning new things and discovering new puzzles. I just got a tangram cube in yesterday, which your video tutorial on it inspired me to get so I can learn how to solve it. I'm probably going to have to reference that video a few times, but it looks like it'll be a fun challenge for me.

  • @danavipuzzles7308
    @danavipuzzles73085 ай бұрын

    Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, handboards go way back and getting the originals now isn't cheap, but in my opinion their quality is better than anything else on the market today. The two top handboard companies from what I've seen today are Redemption and Genesis. The redemption decks are very nice, but they come with composite (not metal) trucks, which I was very disappointed with. When you pay $100+ for a handboard, I believe it should have metal trucks. The wheels on them are okay, but nothing special. As for Genesis, I haven't had one but I don't like how wide the decks look in pictures and videos. Seems unrealistically wide to me. And the wheels require spacers to keep them in place, which I don't like either. Also, both companies come with foam grip that is way too thick in my opinion, which looks unrealistic. Also, when applying the grip it's very hard to cut and the ends look jagged. But you can buy thin foam grip on Amazon (1mm thick) and it will apply and look more like regular griptape. As for puzzles, I'm glad that you've found my videos helpful. One of the things I love about the Tangram cube is that is looks very complicated, but once you understand the concept and the solution, it's actually very easy to solve. The hardest part is keeping your perspective due to its odd cuts, but after many solves your mind adjusts to it. I now find the Tangram cube easier to solve than a 3x3. The Tangram Extreme is a bit more challenging, but still relatively easy to solve once you learn the method. And it looks even crazier when it's scrambled.

    If you sand the inside of the edges and squeeze the cube, the rotation improves a lot in the plus version. The edges are divided into 3 pieces, these joints cause the pieces to catch and jump.

  • @danavipuzzles7308
    @danavipuzzles73086 ай бұрын

    I generally try to avoid modding any of my puzzles unless the puzzle is completely unusable. That was the case with my Vergo's Pentagram, where I sanded the sharp points of the external pieces and it made it much more playing. As far as the Rainbow Plus Cube, I've solved it probably 25-30 times by now and can solve it comfortably as it is. With the 2x2 turns it's mostly about getting the alignment right and with the Dino turns it's more about turning carefully to avoid a pop. So, I don't need to do any sanding with it.

Some part is always wrong after the Sune moves. And since my cube is scrambled already, it's difficult to realize which part moves in what way. Thanks!

    Hi, the edges of the last layer is indeed one of the hardest steps of the solve. I'll see if and when I manage to make a video about it, but in the meantime I can say that all it requires is the Sune algorithm along with the opposite edge swap algorithm (R, 2U, R, 2U, R, 2U, R, 2U, R), which will swap the right and left edges of the top face. These two algorithms together with set-up moves and understanding which pieces move in which ways will get the job done. You will also utilize positioning sometimes cycle only the outer edges on the sides while the inner edges are cycled on the top face, versus sometimes cycling the inner edges on the sides while only the outer edges cycle on the top face. For me, usually after I go a few months without solving the puzzle, then I have to do a bit of improvisation with the setups to remember how to cycle the pieces just right. One thing I clearly remember is that you have to get a position where two flipped yellow edges are in front and to the right, from which position you do the setup move with the M turn upwards. It's more complicated than that, though, because as far as I remember you also need to have a specific separation of the edges, and not a situation where all outer and middle edges are already reduced while they are still flipped. Basically, you have to keep all this in mind and keep playing around with it until you get all of the yellow edges flipped right on the top layer, middle and outer edges altogether. Then dealing with reducing the top-layer edges on the sides is fairly easy. It might take you 5 minutes if you get lucky, or it could take you an hour or few. Ultimately, I think you need to do this like 10+ times over and over again until you grasp it well enough to where you can easily repeat the process in 5-10 minutes without having to resort to some trial and error.

    How should I go about orienting the outer corners? I have all the preceding steps completed with the corners all in their correct positions. But I can't get the outer corners oriented. I've tried the Ri Di R D algorithm without any success. I've also tried the standard 3x3x3 corner rotating algorithm. That algorithm messes up the inner corners though. I finally figured it out using the standard corner rotating algorithm with the green or blue face on top.

    If you use the method that I use, which leaves the middle-piece corners as the last step, then it doesn't matter if those pieces move around when you do Ri Di R D. It only matters that the inner corner pieces don't move, and in order to accomplish that you need to position the cube (and sometimes do some setup moves) in a way where the 1-1 faces will be in the front and back, and not turned during the algorithm (since for the Ri, Di, R, D sequence you'll only be turning U, R, and D, and not turning F or B.

    Easier to do 2 middle edges and 3 middle centers as the first step, then do the bottom layer.

    Could be, though I never tried it that way. Maybe I'll give it a try sometime.

    Another good trick for the ghost cube is not to use CFOP OLL and PLL to solve the last/top layer, because orienting the edges on a ghost cube is really weird. Instead, I use the 55 part of the 8355 method. The basic idea is to leave one corner of the bottom layer and one edge of the middle layer unsolved to use as a keyhole/working area. The last five edges get oriented and positioned one by one, by using that working area to move them to different positions or flip the orientation. It is easier to see that the edge is actually solved (lines up with the top center) than just trying to orient it when it is not in position. Then solving the corners is different from CFOP, but there are at least two strategies available, the standard beginner 3-corner-cycle alg, or a variant of the old standby R'D'RD. The idea there is that there are five or less unsolved corners, all but maybe one on the top layer. Use the space on the bottom as work space. If the piece in the bottom corner is where it belongs, use R'D'RD to swap it with an unsolved top corner. Then rotate the top until the space where that unsolved piece goes is above the workspace corner, and apply R'D'RD until it is in position and correctly oriented. If you are lucky, repeat until done. If unlucky, you will end up with all the top corners oriented and positioned, but the rest of your cube is trash because you haven’t done R'D'RD a multiple of three times. Continue R'D'RDing until the bottom two layers are solved. You will then have one corner on top and one corner on the bottom that are misoriented. Turn the cube so they are both on top, and R'D'RD to orient them, or whatever good CFOP trick you have for orienting two corners that are in the correct positions.

    @@tdbtdbthedeadbunny Also sounds like an interesting way for solving it. Thanks for sharing these ideas. I might try it sometime just for the fun of it, but I'm so used to solving it using the basic 3x3 method that it's quite easy for me at this point. I think already 6-7 years ago I was solving this cube in about 3 minutes. Not much faster now, but more comfortable with it. Sometimes I like to finish off the last layer with cuboid algorithms for some variety.

    @@danavipuzzles7308 wow, you must have great spatial sense. I am pretty familiar with this puzzle, but I still can’t easily distinguish the triangle pieces from each other or orient edges. I have to put the trapezoids in place to see if they fit. The other edges and corners are easier to deal with.

    @@tdbtdbthedeadbunny The small triangle corners that are almost identical, when you can put them in, if you look very closely you can see whether or not it fits perfectly in relation to the edges. If it fits perfectly then it's the right one, and if it fits 98% perfectly, then it's off. It's a similar situation with two of the edges which are very similar. I used to confuse them in my initial solves, but eventually I learned to distinguish them. And even when I'd put in the wrong ones, I had a method for swapping them from the bottom layer. It wasn't a very efficient method, but intuitive. I'd need to re-rotate one of the bottom-layer corners and then redo one of the middle-layer edges, but it got the job done. Have you tried solving a 4x4 Ghost Cube yet? If not, I highly recommend it. It makes the 3x3 Ghost Cube feel like a child's toy.
