Birmingham Protests In May 1962, four goals were identified for the Birmingham protest: desegregation of snack bars, fitting rooms, restrooms, and drinking water fountains in department stores; non-discriminatory promotion and hiring of blacks to work in retail chains and industrial enterprises of the city; an amnesty for all demonstrators who end up behind bars; creation of an interracial committee to develop a schedule for desegregation in other areas of Birmingham life. Each participant in the movement signed a special “commitment card” to the movement, pledging to abide by its principles. The protest began on April 3. The sit-ins were followed by the first arrests. On April 12, King led an unauthorized demonstration and was arrested and thrown into prison. After being released from prison on bail eight days later, King decided to recruit college and high school students into the ranks of the demonstrators. On May 2, more than a thousand young demonstrators were detained. The next day, even more young people took part in a street demonstration, chanting: “We want freedom!” They did not respond to the order to stop and then they began to pour water from fire hoses on them. In response to this, stones and bottles were thrown at the police. Police dogs were unleashed on the demonstrators. The next day newspapers carried photographs of police dogs biting Birmingham children. More than 2,500 demonstrators were detained.
