    Great guide! I don't know if it makes sense to service these, but it sure _does_ make sense when you're learning as I am. I also appreciate the care you put into the service, and I certainly agree that if we _are_ going to service it, we should give it our best so we can be proud of the result. I've recently struggled with the shock springs in this movement, but it's all good practice for me.

  • @MacroTime28800
    @MacroTime2880022 күн бұрын

    The time and effort it takes to service this, it would be a lot more expensive than buying a new movement and replacing it. It would only make sense if you really wanted to keep the original movement that was in the watch when the watch was purchased. These movements are perfect for practice. A single part for most movements would cost more than this movement. The shock springs, the only way to get good at it, is to do it over and over until you’re comfortable. It’s not going to happen the first day but if you keep doing it, it will become second nature.

  • @vonkruel
    @vonkruel22 күн бұрын

    @@MacroTime28800 For sure, there's no substitute for practice and we shouldn't even want one. When I'm struggling & getting a bit flustered, I can remind myself that I'm _in_ the learning curve and it's all good. There aren't clients waiting to get their pieces back, so I can take a break & come back to it refreshed. I _will_ get there, but gosh I do appreciate the much easier to deal with shock springs that I've found in ETAs and Sellitas. Anyhow, there's so much more to learn and I'll stay tuned! Thanks for your expert guidance. 🍻

    Couple of comments, You can use concave pushers as anvil if you have tight spaces just make sure to stop in time or you will crush the jewel after it's out. The threaded bottom on the horia is to fit a screw so you can use pushers upside down. You should never, ever push a jewel out from the underside to the outside or from outside to inside as the holes are slightly tapered to prevent jewels from being pushed out away from the axle if you do this you can damage the hole and have jewels that are looser than factory spec. Your Seitz press is a previous generation than what bergeon sells now, I've only used older sets so I can't comment on the quality of the latest one but my old sets where all perfect. I mainly use the horia both the micrometric kind and the lever, the reamers are really nice and they also have 5 sided broaches which are more ideal centering wise VS the D shaped reamers. You can put the spring back in the Seitz to make it go up again... The screw is for adjusting the depth of the spindle so you can use the micrometer bit and anvil. Good video overall. Edit, looking closely at your video it appears your spindle is missing the snap ring retaining the spring, if you have a lathe you can easily cut a groove for a split steel ring to fit. Your tool is useless otherwise it will just fall all the way down when you insert it...

  • @Inkreptile
    @InkreptileАй бұрын

    I've also seen the micrometric horia and it works the same as the horia. "Chatons sa" also made a micrometric press.

    I thought that’s what the thread in the base of the Horia tool was for. I just found it strange that Horia didn’t have that screw on their website, or to be correct, I didn’t see one. I had a discussion with several watchmakers whether there is a way to push jewels out. One suggested that perhaps from the underside. My guess is that if the holes are tapered, that will be only on the higher end movements as this adds cost to manufacturing. Where did you get the info from? I don’t think the Bergeon/Seitz is missing the snap ring. It’s not mentioned anywhere in the documents from Bergeon. They either no longer do it that way or you perhaps bought a used one that has been modified?

    Great video (really!), but I have a couple of points. First is that you shouldn't have removed the spring when converting the Seitz to micrometer mode because that's why the pusher now doesn't go up when you unscrew the micrometer. It goes up and down just like the Horia if you don't remove the spring. Second point is that I'm glad you're pointing out the quality of (recent) Seitz pushers and stumps, but keep in mind that vintage ones are often much better made, correctly concave, and with little pump pusher side shake. This comparison is most useful if you're purchasing a new tool. Older Seitz sets also include far more stumps.

  • @MacroTime28800
    @MacroTime28800Ай бұрын

    Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! The cap is not attachable to the spindle, I do not understand how it would go up? I can only compare what I have, I do not have the old Seitz tool hence only comparing the the new Seitz/Bergeon.

  • @hugeshows
    @hugeshowsАй бұрын

    @@MacroTime28800 The spring pushes the spindle back up, it doesn't attach to the cap as you noted. Try it! Also, the screw on the top of the cap changes the depth of the inside of the cap which allows you to 'zero' the micrometer in any given position. I just uploaded a demonstration video on my channel if you are curious.

    As always I read a great video. Something is wrong with the Bergeon B Dip liquid. Every time I put a scale in it and even though I then let it dry when installing the scale in the movement, it doesn't go well, there are some spirals stuck. I have broken some and tried to fix them and in the end with benzine and 20 seconds of IPA is the best way to clean them. I'm doing something wrong but I don't know what it is.

  • @MacroTime28800
    @MacroTime28800Ай бұрын

    I don’t use the B-dip anymore. I don’t think it was doing a great job. Do you have an ultrasonic? If yes, when everything is disassembled, put the balance back on the mainplate, secure it with the screw and put it in the ultrasonic. Also remove the ruby settings so the pivots get a better clean in the ultrasonic.

  • @MacroTime28800

    I doubt the ultrasonic would crack a jewel. The high-end watch cleaning machines also use ultrasound as well as rotation.
