This channel is intended as a public catalogue of musical works which I deem underrepresented online or, in general, unsung relative to their quality. Hopefully, classical 'masterworks' deserving of greater praise may find some of it here.

STUNNING! ... Finally, I can begin to comprehend Ralph Vaughan William´s Masterpiece ... THANKS a million !!! ... Let us not forget, that Tallis was a religious outsider by the time he wrote this music, respected as a musician but at the same time outcast as a Roman Catholic at a time when Anglicisim was paving its way as the mainstream religion in England ... With great sensitivity Ralph Vaughan Williams, although not confessing to any religion himself, has reinterpreted Psalm 2 in such a way, that one can feel the oppression of the devout Catholic that Tallis was at a time when his Religion was barely tolerated ... kzread.info/dash/bejne/m5ysl658dpTferw.html

Finally decided to look up the source melody for Vaughan-Williams' fantasia. It's very beautiful, the chord structure is very pleasing to the ear. Shame about the lyrics though. Psalm 2 is basically "God: This is David, my chosen king. Pray to me and serve David or you will piss me off and David will come kill you with a sword." At least RVW's fantasia is instrumental 🙂

Why do the nations conspire[a] and the peoples plot in vain? 2 The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed, saying, 3 “Let us break their chains and throw off their shackles.” 4 The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. 5 He rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying, 6 “I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.” 7 I will proclaim the Lord’s decree: He said to me, “You are my son; today I have become your father. 8 Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. 9 You will break them with a rod of iron[b]; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.” 10 Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. 11 Serve the Lord with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling. 12 Kiss his son, or he will be angry and your way will lead to your destruction, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

Thank you!!! I'm glad I'm not the only one who's aware of that! (It's probably because of the use of the long "s" in old printing, the one that looks like an "f" - but in this case, it actually is an "f".)

*Psalm 2 (KJV, 1611)* Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

Even for the works of Vaughan Williams, this is something of a forgotten gem. It's so dramatic and atmospheric (Masterworks Gallery - the accompanying image really lends itself well to this musical masterpiece). I love the way the tempestuous mood gives way to the tranquil and very harmonic ending - so climactic. I agree with Matthew Black - the ending is played a little too quickly. 🎼👏🏾⭐❤

This is also Hymn No.92 in The English Hymnal with words by J. Addison (1672-1719). The opening words are 'When, rising from the bed of death, o'erwhelmed with guilt and fear, I see my maker face to face. O how shall I appear?' I think Addison's words, suitable for Lent, are particularly good.

Musically, the absolutely beautiful ' 'Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis', by Ralph Vaughan Williams makes sense now. You can hear the harmonies that Vaughan Williams used as origin points for the melodious orchestrations of his well-known masterpiece. Always good to learn of the origin of things that we are familiar with today. This is such a wonderful hymn. I wonder if there is a time of year it should be sung.🎼👏🏾⭐🙏🏾❤

Its seems that Ralph merely transcribed it to strings, therefore respect to Thomas Tallis, as with Rachmaninoff, a lot of great pieces are drawn from liturgical pieces, drawn from human conceptions of gods and creation. I'm not a religious person, but revel in these, like Kings College performance of Psalm 130.

The kinges arise: the lordes deuise, in counsayles mett therto: Agaynst the Lord: with false accord, against his Christ they go. 3. Let vs they say: breake downe their ray, of all their bondes and cordes: We will renounce: that they pronounce, their loores as stately lordes. 4. But God of might: in heauen so bright, Shall laugh them all to scorne: The Lord on hie: shall them defie, they shall be once forlorne. 5. Then shall his ire: speake all in fire, to them agayne therfore: He shall with threate: their malice beate, in his displeasure sore. 6. Yet am I set: a king so great, on Sion hill full fast: Though me they kill: yet will that hill, my lawe and worde outcast. 7. Gods wordes decreed: I (Christ) wil sprede for God thus sayd to me/e: My sonne I say: thou art, this day, I haue begotten the/e. 8. Aske thou of me/e: I will geue the/e, to rule all Gentils londes: Thou shalt possesse: in suernesse, the world how wide it stondes. 9. With iron rod: as mighty God, all rebels shalt thou bruse: And breake them all: in pieces small, as sherdes the potters vse. 10. Be wise therfore: ye kinges the more, Receyue ye wisdomes lore: Ye iudges strong: of right and wrong, aduise you now before. 11. The Lorde in feare: your seruice beare, with dread to him reioyce: Let rages be: resist not ye, him serue with ioyfull voyce. 12. The sonne kisse ye: lest wroth he be, lose not the way of rest: For when his ire: is set on fire, who trust in hym be blest.
