I hope this movie gives comfort, no matter how small, to any daughters stuck in relationships like this with THEIR mothers. Knowing they weren’t and aren’t the only ones.

I wonder why the sons didn’t help them. That house was too big and too expensive for little Edie to maintain. I wonder why other family members didn’t help. It is so heartbreaking to see her go from a socialite to this. Was this filmed before the clean up or after?

Great series. David Janssen was very handsome and did a splendid work in Fugitive. "The fugitive" starring Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones is the remake of David Janssen's The Fugitive.

The show was well written and acted, but its popularity was based on presenting viewers with the ultimate fantasy: being able to run away and hide from the responsibilities and tedium of daily life. Richard Kimble no longer had to pay a mortgage, answer to superiors, face his job pressures or put his family first in all his decisions. Not that he would have chosen this scenario, but since it was thrust on him, he did not have to feel guilt about being truly free.

Arizona Republic, Phoenix, AZ, July 4, 1963; Diane Brewster: 'Demise' Provides Unique TV Role, By Joseph Finnegan; HOLLYWOOD (UPI)--Actress Diane Brewster has one of the unique roles on television. She's a corpse. The pretty Miss Brewster doesn't start out that way. In fact, she's very much alive. But not for long. Diane's demise is necessary for a new ABC-TV series, "The Fugitive." It's about a man suspected of murdering his wife. He spends the rest of next fall's video season running from cops. THAT'S where Miss Brewster comes in. She's the wife. But as we said, not for long. David Janssen plays her husband, a doctor accused of her murder. This is a switch for David, best remembered for his video portrayal of "Richard Diamond," a private eye who chased crooks all over the nation's television screens for several years. Janssen spends the first two segments of "Fugitive" eluding the law. In the third, we see why. "WE HAVE an argument, and he leaves the house," explains Diane, who appears in the third episode as Janssen recalls the murder scene. "When he returns to the house, he sees a one-armed man running down the lawn and finds me dead on the living room floor." That's the last police see of Janssen, and we see of Miss Brewster. From then on, she'll be casually referred to as a murder victim, the only dead character to appear on a regular weekly television series. Such notoriety will make Miss Brewster's character the most talked about corpse since Lenin's. THIS IS a good part," said Diane, who doesn't want to work every week in television. "As far as the Idea of not being in the show every week is concerned, it hadn't occurred to me that I won't be able to. But I haven't worked very much since about 1961 and I don't want to. My husband and I have two children. If work is about every two or three months, that's adequate." Once Miss Brewster is disposed of, "Fugitive" writers must arrange for Janssen to escape the law every week. Because he's on the run, David gives up his medical practice and takes odd jobs, always looking over his shoulder. If David is ever caught, his show ends. But ABC-TV hopes that favorable audiences and lax law enforcement on television might keep David running for years. As for that one-armed man, keep your eye on him. He's the reason David is running.

Can somebody tell me what is happening between 1:24:00 and 1:25:00. Why is Big Edie so angry? Is it because she believes that Little Edie is flirting iwth one of the Maysles brothers?

I think they used some Twilight Zone music in this episode. Also, I read that Quinn Martin was a nice guy! He was a demanding producer, but (apparently) he valued the people who worked for him and those people valued him. I love hearing about good people succeeding through talent and hard work.

Maybe if neighbors and family were kinder and not so judgmental these two ladies would have lived a healthier and happier life. They did the best they could and tried to get through each day. So much wealth surrounding them in both the community and family and yet it took a newspaper article and family embarrassment to help them get some basic necessities. I hope Little Edie enjoyed the last years of her life in Fla. She deserved to be happy.

I liked this documentary tremendously when I first saw it on TCM ages ago. Based on the scene with the newspaper alone, I’m guessing that Keaton was an inspiration for deadpan standup comedian Steven Wright similar to how a certain expression/noise Jimmy Finlayson made in Laurel and Hardy films encouraged Dan Castellaneta to give Homer Simpson his trademark catchphrase.

There was a time when they were going to catch the one armed guy but fans wrote in and said NO! NOT YET! So it continued awhile longer.
