Sephardic Genealogy

Sephardic Genealogy

Sephardic Jewish genealogy and history. Trace your roots in the diaspora story of the Sephardim - Jews expelled from Spain and Portugal. This channel explores the three Sephardic groups: Ottoman communities in Turkey, Greece, Balkans; Moroccan Megorashim; and the Western/Portuguese Jews who settled in Amsterdam, London, New York, Jamaica, Curaçao, the Caribbean and elsewhere.

Talks on genetic genealogy tools like yDNA, autosomal DNA testing and the AI transcription platform Transkribus. Learn about Sephardic liturgical music, cultural traditions, as well as erroneous claims of Jewish pirates, Ashkenazim of Sephardic ancestry, crypto-Jews, bnei anusim, and Sephardic surnames. Primary focus is on the Western Sephardim - the community that survived the Spanish and Portuguese inquisitions and later formed a global diaspora.

None Jew, none white, not a scholar but just a regular Jamaican who lately became interested in finding out more about how the early Jew contributed to Jamaica especially seeing the status they hold today. I must say that after listening to these uploads on this channel and a few others elsewhere, this lecture has come the closest to what I’ve heard from the older folks here in Jamaica. Well done!

This was an amazing talk! I agree with what has been said concerning admixture estimates. In this respect, the GEDMATCH DODECAD V3 calculator is in my opinion very accurate. Some blame it for being obsolete, but in my experience all Oracle estimations (1,2,3 and 4 population estimations) of Dodecad V3 can give you excellent "fingerprints" of both Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jews. I compared dozens of GEDCOM family trees and was able to establish "fingerprints" of Sephardim and Ashkenazim on DODECAD V3. Not scientific (we need very large samples to achieve statistical significance), but very very reproducible in my experience.

That's rather fascinating to hear about this notion of "resevoirs of survivors". I have 2 German parents born in 1929 and 1931. Surprisingly, it appears 2 and perhaps even 3 of my 4 grandparents had distant Jewish Sephardic and/or Ashkenazi ancestry that was passed on to me via DNA. This is based on observations of my matches via autosomal DNA. I've often wondered about the living Jewish people whom I match, the majority are in the USA... with most having roots there that predate WWII. For some time, I've had a hunch that I may have DNA that is shared with ghosts... people who did not have the opportunity to live and have descendants. (I have a match named Gindi incidentally. That name came up. And on the issue of Europeans apparently often getting 1-2% Jewish ancestry... I would say that is inaccurate! I also match tons of Europeans but very few of them get Jewish ethnicity estimates. It is not common. There was a suggestion that it's commonly, and therefore, incorrectly assigned. In any case, ethnicity estimates are not that useful. Autosomal matches... that's telling you something, especially if >15 cM is involved... if there is more than one segment involved.)

And im 2% Northern African, and 2% Jewish. So there is a high probability Im Sephardic Jew. Other than an ancestry i dont know how I could prove it.

This does not or shall not bring any predjudice to the mentionned families who are normally proud of their ancestors. Nobody shall be judged for a past in which he could not take part. Eventually all the persons whose family names are enlisted here are entitled to the US authorities protection as people who still share a Common content in the history of the foundation of New York.

And for Toro, yes we find. Toro a city in Zamora, Castilla -Leon. The Toros, the toponimic nobles (Portugal and Castille work the same way) are Caballeros de St Iago and Calatrava. Illustrious names were D. Bernardo Rodriguez de Toro. D. Mateo de Toro was Conde de la Conquista (so NY is not only connected to the slave trade fortunes but also to the South American Conquest), D Alonso Hernandez de Toro, son of D. Leonor Lopez. Lopes de Haro (the ancient families are the same in Castille and Portugal), D.Ana Sanchez Santos (D Afonso Sanches Senhor de Albuquerque connected to Saldanha and Valadares), D Juan de Toro, D Alonso de Toro, D Catalina de Toro who married to the Counts of Barajas. Source: Heraldry Institute of Rome for Toro. Blason: "en campo de plata 3 fajas de azur y sobre cada una de ellas dos toros pardos, andantes". Therefore, it seems to me quite clear that the Touro and Toro are the same (see Voz do Algarve article), and that one of the origins of NY is to be found in the Ancient Noble Jews of Beira Alta, Vila de Touro and Zamora, Ciudad de Toro. Another name linked to the Algarve Touro family branch: Soveral Fernandes.

Toro in fact pertains to Castilla Leon and is not that far of Beira Alta.

The last trial was on the Institute of heraldry of Rome. There appear all the noble names of Europe regardless of the country of origin. Bufalina family is the response. Maybe the Touro pertain or not. Why is this interesting? Because Many Portuguese families who stabilized here came from Northern Europe, whether because they were chased by conflicts ( the King of Leon, Portocarrero who brought the money of the Lombards, and who was chased around 800 by Charles the Great of France ( Charlemagne), the Gondisalves (lit the White, Alves, warriors Gondis) who were German nobles who came with the barbairian invasions forming pre Al Andaluz kingdoms, aso. It may well be that the Bufalina did the same and translated their names. We see Farinha for Farina and Sergio for Sergio ancient Italian nobility. But this last source is the less relyiable. This should be checked. As Toro of Castille origin they may well be from Toro in Spain also a toponimic name.

Still about Isaac Touro. The Northern Portugal family did like the others during the conquest heading South. They fixed first in Alentejo, then in Algarve. Source Geneall Net Portugal. A young Touro lady married a Galvão Mimoso. My father still had Galvão as family name. A Luis Vaz de Touro leads to José de Almeida Mimoso, the Almeida still being connected with my fathers family. José Maria Ferreira (I am Marrecas Ferreira) also pertains to the Touro. Freires and Oliveiras are also connected. A Juzarte appears who is a Valente as we seen in other shares. Juzarte= Zuzarte. My grand mother and my grand father were both Valente. Gramaxo Siza Vieira is also family member in Touro community (the former minister of economy in the socialists government). Seixas is also very clear in the Portuguese side. Other names connected to: Guterres (UNSG), Duarte (Bragança), Rodrigues, Coelho, Lopes de Gusmão (matches in both US and PRT sides; Lopes), Afonso Mendes (idem), Mesquita, Ataíde, Mendes, Negreiros (Almada Negreiros, meaning we are distant cousins). I still have one trial on the Touro to do. But I think I could claim US protection and not suffer of US exposure.

About Isaac Touro. There are important old cities that today are almost desertifyied. Touro is a local Council of Vila Nova de Touro. Vila do Touro is close. Beira Alta is the Region of Portugal. Why is this important? Because Touro as a family name is toponimic which in Portugal is very important for the Ancient nobility. So Isaac Touro from a Toro family was an important nobleman in Portugal which explains his part of the fortune he developped. Connected to the Touro. Mesquitela (also a city in Beira Alta but also the name of Counts of Torrão after Galvão, Costa and Salema, all connected in the same family. Mesquitela connects with Vila da Ponte (,my Grand mother Da Ponte e Horta), and Caria (Condes de Caria), also a little city, and Quintela. Quintela Durão. Durão Barroso. What is troubling is that these toponimic names are all in the Northern Beira Region (Beira Alta) and are relatively close. About the name Touro as family member, the Portuguese genealogy lists a series of names. And Voz do Algarve explains the very old origin of Touro family.

The joint tenancy with the right of continuity is called fundação in Portugal and still exists as such. Foundation= trust. But a trust that survives because the benefittor of the trust is the community. Not the trustee nor the Cestuy qui Trusts ' heirs. Its ' typically a foundation in the Portuguese sense.

Aaron Lopes. Família Lopes, Lopes de Haro. At the origin a Castille -Galician family of Kings ascent. If all these people went rich is that they had origins that allowed this. Politics made them separate from Portugal. The slave trader was effectively a slave trader, he must have been quite hard as were his Portuguese or still Portuguese cousins. New York cannot evade this reality.
