Another typical no-action plan. Purchased 20 years ago and still no hint of a serious excavation strategy for the site. My guess is that the local council can't afford to take the risk of finding anything of historical merit under the surface. It may scupper any plans they have of developing the site for more affordable housing projects or leasing out land for additional garden allotments! This site SHOULD have been excavated when Chysauster was being examined but, as half of it is now lost under housing, the opportunity has long since past. They haven't even bothered to erect an information board with theoretical site plan for the encampment. Very poor!

@@theBriceSide Yes, they've clearly given up any serious intent to excavate the site. I'll be honest and say that imo a visit to the 'castle' is not worth the time or effort as it presently stands. At the very most you'll be able to say that you went there; nothing else! PS:- When I lived in Newlyn there wasn't a finer pasty shop than Eddys Bakery at the foot of Paul Hill. Sadly it shut many moons ago!

Hi there! Fantastic video of one of my favourite places!. That circular building at 11+ minutes in is one of Levant Mine's explosives store (there's another one not too far away), where they'd have stored the dynamite & gunpowder - far enough away from the main mine buildings that it wouldn't damage them if the whole lot exploded! The oval stone structure with the grille on top at 15 mins is one of the shafts of Wheal Cock, a mine in between Botallack and Levant - there's another grille-covered shaft down below on the seaward side, with an extremely impressive wall stopping it falling down into the sea! Yes, as another commentor says, the labyrinth you were walking round was the arsenic labyrinth - basically a huge flue, which led up from the building with the complex brickwork, the calciner, where the ore was roasted. The fumes passed up the flue, round the zig-zag labyrinth, over the arch, back along the labyrinth on the other side, then to the tall chimney. They roasted the ore to remove the arsenic, which was an unwanted contaminant in the ore, but they collected the arsenic salts too, as it was a useful by-product. I don't think it was scraped off by the children, I think the regular miners did it. It was known to be highly poisonous - their PPE was a handkerchief over the mouth and nose! I don't think they had a very long life expectancy! The Crowns engine house you walked down to - the upper one - was the one that hauled the ore up from the mine. There was a wooden superstructure built between the shaft - diagonally down from where the path was roped off - to the mouth of the shaft in the rocks below, which held rails carrying the skips that were hauled up out of the mine. There is a rather dodgy and dangerous way down to the lower engine house, which pumped water out of the mine, but it's not really worth going down there anyway.

There are Cornish pasties and there are Ginsters, which are a completely different entity. I have had arguments with my upcountry father in law who reckons Ginsters are proper Cornish pasties. What would he know? They always stock them in the supermarkets up there and everyone thinks they are proper pasties. I'm surprised nobody has set fire to the factory tbh. I'm Cornish but I don't have much of a Cornish accent. My parents and hub come from the south east, so I have more of a neutral accent with the odd 'maeed' and 'ansom' thrown in. Unfortunately, the Cornish are being 'phased out' in Cornwall. There are less and less as the years go by, being replaced with Bolton and Birmingham accents. I don't hear the Cornish accent that much these days. All my neighbours are from upcountry, but they try to be more Cornish than the Cornish and this is why Cornwall has lost its identity.

Two pasties for lunch. Wow, don’t you get indigestion? The last Philps I had was awful. Never again. There aren’t many places that make a nice pasty now. I think I had a Hampsons one time and it was nice but it was a long time ago. Good quality meat is expensive which is why there’s never much meat in these things, or expect to pay £10. Best make your own.

A coatee (you pronounced it correctly!) is a “little coat”. A short jacket popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Largely replaced by the more ornate longer jackets with lots of gold lace (frogging). It is a real shame that so many famous regiments have disappeared as the army has shrunk. The casualties in WW 1 are horrendous, I believe the regiment had two active battalions - a total of about 1600 officers and men. Casualties of over 4,000 show how often men needed to be replaced. The US casualties (in one year) of about 2,500 are from a division (about 12,000 men in a typical US infantry division). I think you looked best in the last red jacket you tried on! My first army commission was in the Devon and Dorset Regiment (4th Battalion), before I transferred to the Royal Corps of Signals three years later. Militia and Yeomanry regiments (the TA of the time) often had more glamorous uniforms than the regulars, with rich Colonels who outfitted “their” soldiers. Interestingly the Colonel often had little to do with his regiment after setting it up and would appoint a tenant in lieu, ie a Lieutenant Colonel, who actually did the work and commanded in battle!

I've just seen your review on the Cornish Bakery and have sent my hub to go and get one. Looking forward to trying it. It's sad that the only time Redruth is busy is when it's Murdoch Day or something similar. It's a ghost town most days. Pleased to see Berrymans have renewed their signage. They never used to be open. The last Berrymans I had was 40 years ago in Camborne. Used to love the old Ghost Train. They can never totally eliminate daylight for some reason and you can see it through the cracks in the boards. They always made me laugh.
