Ready Steady Play (RSP) is a channel where Mike and his friends Chris, Michael and Ollie play games together. Mike also teaches them and we all review them in some way. Our aim is to convey to you how the game plays and to help you understand it. This could give you valuable information when choosing which games to play with your play group and also help you avoid the potential embarrassment of choosing the wrong game, or one that is just terrible. Where possible we also try to make it as not boring as we can.

Yup, Battle for Rokugan is a banger and as an old school L5R player it's a nice little hit of nostalgia. Such a shame it will never get a reprint or an expansion.
2:02:30 - I love the combat in Dwellings. Firstly, you have many Magic cards to help. Secondly, you get to do the action of the location (meaning you can't really be blocked in the game, like in other worker placement games), and lastly, for each unit that dies and goes to the underworld, you get a Sword resource (which can be turned around to summon more workers). It's a brilliant system. Sure even a single worker could take down a dragon, or one of the monsters, but I like that too. Underdog. One of the things I also like is that the adjacent dwellings add +1 dice in combat.
For me, Dwellings of Eldervale is a masterpiece of game design along the same lines as Mage Knight. I love the game too much! I looked at Andromeda's Edge some but it doesn't seem as good as Eldervale to me from what I saw. It's hard to improve on what basically can't be improved. This is the same problem the expansions for Dune: Imperium have. The base game is just that good. It doesn't need adding to.
30:00 - if you like the Dark Souls boss battles, the Oathsworn boss battles blow them out of the proverbial water. We are only through 4 of them, yet it’s been some of the most interesting and thematic experiences we’ve ever had in gaming! Dark Souls bosses were ok-ish but getting to them wasn’t fun.
I somehow missed the Cosmic Frogs expansions, so thank you for alerting me to that. It's such a crazy, fun game. I'll also second Barry that the Arnak campaign is very good. I played the initial implementation over the pandemic, and it's nice that they created a hard copy (with extras). I'll have to get that to the table again soon.
During enemy reactions, only 1 enemy of the chosen type reacts. You moved all 3 red enemies on turn 1.
"You can see it says 'Water Tower" No it doesn't 'Say' anything. You have to read it! :D
Any chance to get the tabletop docs? In my country its imposible to buy the game i want to make it Print to play
For pronunciation, look in the pdf encyclopedia, available to backers, page 348 on.
They didn’t get a copy of that, they were sent a copy from Mighty Boards. Someone is already seeing if the pronunciations can be posted to BGG though. Once approved, it should be up.
@@Malgamus Yep that is me but so far no approval from MB.
Thanks for your help!
For new viewers: Laying on hands only works on others ^_^
I'm so very torn on Lacerda games; The Gallerist and Lisboa felt fresh, compelling, and worth the calories when I first encountered them. I've played everything up to Weather Machine, which I skipped--ditto Inventions. Escape Plan and On Mars should have been keepers due my fondness for their themes alone, but I unloaded them quickly. Lisboa is now the only Lacerda I still own. I cannot shake the feeling that his rulesets are increasingly comparable to fancy complications in a mechanical watch: fun, intricate, yet needless features that still don't help one tell time any better. I'm also torn on HexPlore It. I only have Domain of Mirza Noctis, which is the one theme in the series that really grabbed me. It's addition of Dungeons is clever and adds a tasty, optional, push your luck element of exploration. It's very math-y in an old school RPG way, which feels dry. It does unfold in some evocative, generative storytelling that's more "theatre of the mind" than what one gets from spoon-fed pages & pages of flavor text or choose-your-own adventure narratives--which I very much appreciate. I've only played DoMN solo, with two characters in the mix. I wouldn't personally enjoy pure solo with only one player character.
Yeeaaahh, I definitely think the 1st Volume of Hexplore It is the "worst". The following volumes add a lot more complexity and make the world feel waaaay more dynamic. Also the campaign books are very very good!
I want to see you and Barry stream Dominion!
I miss the fly 😂
Breaking Games signed Dwellings of Eldervale with Luke Laurie while Peter Vaughn was a developer there. Then, Peter left Breaking Games to start Cardboard Alchemy. He signed Andromeda’s edge with Luke. Dwellings of Eldervale seems significantly more heavy than the rest of Breaking Games selection. It’s probably a better fit for a company for Cardboard Alchemy, which is why I’m glad Andromeda’s Edge is with Peter and Cardboard Alchemy.
Do you happen to have an RSS link for the podcast? (I can't seem to find it on the Pocket Casts aggregator.) If not, no worries. Thanks!
I do! The RSS link is: anchor.fm/s/f541279c/podcast/rss
If you want more info on Captain's Chair, I know a guy ;)
Such a well designed game. I could see some AP in the prep phase, but other than that, it seems golden, especially if you throw a boss in there that everyone is also dealing with.
Nice sum up of an excellent UKGE. Forest Shuffle + Alpine is excellent, my most played game on BGA this year.
i like the podcast format. Hopefully it worked well for you. Loved that Barry could join you. Feel better soon.
This disappeared from my "to watch" list somehow, so getting through the first episodes now. I'll second that Cthulhu Wars is absolutely worth playing if you can find someone running a game. A friend had the copy and we spent a whole evening backstabbing and having a blast.
Didn’t you have to start the Abyssal Empress in contact with the Darkness Shrine?
Will you guys do another play through of the game?
When do u use the red dice
We beat it today. One of the hard episodes. But it should be played with Goat.
Good play through. Thank you for the effort.
I'm so torn on Stupor Mundi. I liked my plays on BGA but somehow it's lacking a climax. It never felt like it was taking off and soaring. It's also a terribly low scoring game and resources are just always very tight. Once you build something you have to go on a journey to collect resources again. I was able to perform well both online as well as solo but maybe this is a game that would actually shine a lot more on the table. It is a bit harder to keep everything in view on BGA as I have to keep scrolling to check the king's board and player boards. Overall my feeling is a 7/10 at best right now. I couldn't even tell you what they should improve to make it a 8/10 and get me to back it.
integr-what?
You said, "Does the Moon Princess fund her war efforts through her 'Oni fans.'" ... Ah. Hah. Hah. Hah. Haaaah! I shared that one immediately. )
I picked up Fleet Captains and the Romulan expansion for $60 for both! (they were "used" - the base game had been played once, and the Romulan box had been opened but all the parts were still sealed). My son and I play one game (Federation vs Klingon), and the way the missions came out, we had war a mongering Federation against pacifist Klingons.
Did you ever pull out the insert?
Great pace and rapport!
Thanks for the video, helped a lot with the setup and manual.
Comprehensive and clear, very helpful before starting my first game 👍
why do you not travel to any of the towns and heal?
Thanks for mentioning Gest! I hope to see it featured on the channel... 😊
Great discussion!
The allies had subs, but there was only 1 case in WW2 that I know of where a British sub sank a Uboat.
Question: In turn 1, when Paul drew the Hagal card, and it says to go to the Imperial space then go up 1 influence then receive 2 army units why did you put them in the garrison? do they go into battle instead? can you please go over that move? thanks
Hey Ddiver; thanks for checking out the stream. It looks like Paul's first card is Highliner; can you provide a timestamp for the play you mean?
Recruited soldiers will always go to the garrison, they can only go into the conflict if you go to a combat space (spaces with the two swords in the bottom right)
@@Vital_Velocity Thanks much for clarifying! ok makes sense now. you've earned my sub.
8.0 at BGG is something i really dont' agree with. I would say that the basic version of this game was ok for what it is, a fairly "chaotic game" that can be fun when played a couple of times, but definitively not the kind of game you will try to play again and again for testing new strategies. So, 35 - 40 euros for the basic game yeah, why not.. 75 for some expansions almost none will care about and a couple useless wooden pieces ? no way...
War of the Ring and Dune War for Arakkis both use game limited troops for the Fellowship and Fremen. Both excellent games.
Yeah, good examples. There must be others where all the pieces start on the board and then are removed, maybe not even troops on a map games.
Four years later and still the most detailed and accurate tutorial out there. Thank you very much for making this video.
Love to see this project starting 🎉 can't wait to see/listen to the new episodes. And yeah why not streaming Dominion
This is the only good video on how to play. Well done sir. Well done!
u buet U Buet !!! lol as a German ,super Funny!!!!! keep it up mate
biggest problem here is thst they insisted on 5 endings like the last one but this game more complicated and different formula than the last one and when they realized it it was to late to fix it so they kinda tried to patch it together to make it more ,...like the end results is ugly but it works as a game kinda, they probably should have gone w 3 endings instead and this would have been less complicated and more enjoyable ...they wanted to do everything, they were to ambitious here and couldn't quite pull it off unfortunately...
1:43:48 it seem they experimented a lot w vinland and Lhasa, then perfecting the game through Oklahoma and caravanes then finally getting it right w the hollywood and versailles versions...i mean its not easy making a game like this, its very intricate so im not gonna hold it against them...
its very weird like they never bothered about implementimg the whole boat journey into this....snail eaters🙄🙄🤦🏻♂️
Thanks for this video, always appreciate your clear and concise teaches!
Nice video! I just picked up this game and played one 50gp game with my wife. We both really enjoyed it and will be playing it a lot more! I will probably also pick up the upgraded mousepad game mat as the cloth one tends to move around a but much. I hope to see more factions and cards released for this game as well as a new battlefield mat, the one out now is a bit boring and bland.
