I encourage anyone with the means to visit the Museum of Chinese Writing in Anyang, Henan Province, China. It has many excellent displays of the evolution of Chinese Characters from the earliest symbols in the Neolithic. Nearby is the Yinxu, the Yin Ruins of the Shang Dynasty where the earliest true Chinese writing was found from circa 1200 BCE. It appears that here the Oracle Bone Script, which came before the Bronze Script, evolved. In the Henan Provincial Museum within the Henan Provincial Capital of Zhengzhou, you can see the earliest proto-writing (symbols) on shoulder blades and turtle shells from Jiahu, Henan circa 6400 BCE.
