    I think it would be interesting to have your wife on if there's a topic you disagree on. For example, we have an electric resistance clothes dryer. I'd like to get a heat pump dryer of some kind. (In the US, these are presented as advanced new tech, I know they're not.) My wife says no. Who wins? Second idea, very similar video to this motorcycle video except you are making waffles.

    I am repeating myself, but I am not sure if a huge investment in a large EV is the best way to make a difference right now. A home/solar battery of one tenth the size makes a huge difference for the environment without breaking the bank. Do you really have a large daily commute that will offset the production footprint of a new car? And how often do you travel with 5 onboard? Is that a daily thing or just those few family visits and the yearly vacation trip? Maybe it's a good idea to just rent a small EV and see how that works out while also keeping the van and making a video how that works for you. Also rent a Model Y or something like it and take a really long trip to see if it works for your family and is really the ultimate car for you right now. Also nice for a video. My guess is that you could spend half the cash (or less) on a small used EV and use it for most trips with 4 or less people onboard and just keep the van for family trips and more freedom for both of you. It also solves the big problem of range anxiety, especially when the car is full of vacation luggage.

    Great points you make! We wouldn't be looking at new. We were looking at 4-5 year old vehicles, now looking more at 2yr old vehicles. Planning to keep for 5-10 years, so the production cycle carbon doesn't worry me at all. Our current car is 12 years old now and i'd rather pre-emptively sell it whilst it's running perfectly. We don't use the car during the week. It's mostly weekend use, and mostly with all 5 on board. One of the reasons we went down to only one car is that we noticed we used the car for shorter trips that we shouldn't really. When we had 4 cars on the driveway, it made us lazy! I get what you say about freedom and if we were a little more remote then 2 cars would maybe become more necessary. We really liked the Model Y from a practicality point of view but I would have to change the suspension as I couldn't live with the uncomfortable ride quality. I'm leaning towards the Ioniq 5 as it is a much better all round package, even though the model Y is more practical for a family. Most of the manufacturers have been pretty generous for test drives, with some offering 24hr or weekend use. I've opted not to film any of it, because of my kids being in it. You've pretty much hit the nail on the head with the fact that an EV won't make a huge difference for us as we don't do enough miles to make a meaningful difference to CO2 emissions or to saving money on fuel bills.

  • @SolAce-nw2hf
    @SolAce-nw2hf5 сағат бұрын

    @@UpsideDownFork The production footprint does not suddenly disappear after the first owner hands over the keys when trading up. The car basically still needs to make up for it's emissions. It needs to be with someone who really uses it and not just in your driveway losing range and value. Because if you buy it and someone else also needs one but you just bought the one he/she wanted, maybe another one will be produced. In my opinion just driving the 12 year old diesel in the weekend is perfect for the environment. It will not end up as a daily driver vehicle and no one will take it to the scrapyard. Maintain it well for as long as it makes sense and save the environment by slowing down the consumption cycle. Meanwhile put the money you save into things that do make a real difference. Maybe a green investment fund, a small home battery or something else that feels good or profitable.

  • @UpsideDownFork

    @@SolAce-nw2hf The production emissions of an EV are negated by 15,000 miles. That's the point at which you reach parity with ICE vehicles. Of course many variables for each vehicle and some do it quicker as well as some taking longer but a good rule of thumb. We are looking in the range of 20-30k miles on the clock. I like that you're looking at the whole ownership chain. I look at the other end of the chain. If we can afford to buy a £20k EV that's a couple of years old, we can sell our old car to someone who may only be able to afford a £5k family car. Whilst it is a diesel, it does have adblue and DPF emission reduction systems, so is likely to be better than whatever they may have been driving prior. Yep, reducing consumption has been the number 1 priority for everything i've done so far and it will remain the priority.

    Batteries always play best when night time electricity rates are high. We have time of use on my electricity plan in Australia. over 50c per kw from 4pm to 9pm. but during the day from 11am to 2pm it is free because of all the roof top solar we have. my battery cost (after rebates) $ 7,000 (au), which fills during the free time (when I charge the car, wash the cloths, run the pool pump, etc...). My 13.6wk batter the covers all my night time usage. for us, the math works out. we have solar to cover the other times of the day too. our bill was well over $1000 a quarter, and is now almost $0. So it works for us, but that is because we battled high energy cost, particularly in the evening. our battery saves about $5 to $6 each day, which means it will pay for itself in 4 or so years. I expect prices to continue to go up, which means it may save us even more moving forwards. it's all about the cost, and what it is off setting. as a bonus we are immune to blackouts with our system, unless it's around 3am when our battery depletes.

    Came for the heat pump content and solar stats before having both fitted to our home. How have you managed to keep on top DHW cylinder settings and hot water running out? Not long had a Vaillant Arotherm plus 5kW and ours constantly running out of hot water usually when my daughter is in the shower 😂. Its only 150l cylinder though so probably doesn't help but I think that its mostly been left on factory settings on the controller too. Maybe some content around this as I'm sure there other struggling to find the correct settings and a keeping an angry teenage daughter and wife happy too.

  • @UpsideDownFork
    @UpsideDownFork5 сағат бұрын

    My next video is about our woes with DHW! I don't really go into the specific settings of the Vaillant, I focused more on the overall principles. Show your teenage daughter the data to support the fact that she should have a shorter shower! Haha, ok, I know that won't work! In my video I do go into options of what you can do to combat this issue. 1. Fit a larger cylinder 2. Set to constant re-heat 3. Increase store temperature 4. Set 2 hot water cycles per day. Now, with #1 not really being feasible, options 3 & 4 are your best bets for efficient running. If you are only running out of a little hot water, then increasing the store temperature by a couple of degrees is likely to be the most efficient way forward. If you are running short by a lot, then set your cylinder to reheat twice a day. I did ours so that it reheats at 2am, ready for showers in the morning and then a second cycle at 2pm, ready for evening baths etc. Hope that helps and stay tuned for more detail in my upcoming video!

    I know what I have to say is nothing to do with this video, having watched and listened to nearly all the videos from a lot of people in regards to heat pumps you explain it for someone like myself that hasn’t got a heat pump but would like one to get rid of my gas boiler. Sorry for asking stupid questions but the one thing I still can’t get my head around = the heat pumps are put outside and through basically a reverse way a refrigerator works will take cold air and turn it into warm air , surely if they were inside the house be it garage or loft and suchlike then they already have warmer air to start with so it would use less electricity to get the desired warmth in turn would cost less to run = even more efficiency, people have mentioned how noisy they are obviously depends on the pump which is used within the unit itself , when you think the noise from a gas boiler is actually not that quiet from a decibel perspective , do you think or can you see that the industry will develop an indoor unit which as mentioned starting off with warmer air rather than colder air is surely more logical, this time probably just looking inside the box and not outside of it .

  • @UpsideDownFork
    @UpsideDownFork6 күн бұрын

    @@kavanobrien6547 the main issue with this is airflow. If you look at the CFM required for these outdoor units, you'll quickly realise why it's outdoor only. By precisely programming zone times to match my routine my running costs are equivalent to what gas cost me. Panels are run for less time than gas. My gas CH needed to be on for 2 hours to properly warm up the flat, my panels start putting out heat in 10 minutes and since they are zoned I have some panels on for longer than others to match my routine. Some panels are on for 30 mins and the main one for an hour. My flat is open plan but the bathroom has a door, this means the bathroom heats up very quickly in just a few minutes before I need to use it. 2 hours of gas in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon before coming home is equivalent to 30mins - 1 hour across 6 panels in the morning and the same in the afternoon. The price of electricity is artificially high and tied to the price of gas, as this decouples over the next decade allowing cheaper electricity production panels will get cheaper to run. Currently my panels cost the same to run as my gas CH, you just need to be good at programming the system to match your routine.

    Wow , without doubt that is the best review on portable solar power pack and I think I’ve seen them all be it here or USA , putting my stupid hat on unfortunately the hat fits so well , how much is the power pack ? How much is a panel ? Last stupid question at least for this video = obviously the power pack will loose efficiency over time with natural charging and discharging, so what is the lifespan of the power pack = ballpark guessing or is there information from the company to say what the longevity is going to be ? Great review thanks.

    Thanks for the comment. Allpowers covers them for 5 years but in reality they should last at least double that. The power station is currently £869 and the solar panels are currently £229 each. You can get a further 10% off by using the discount code in the description.

    Thanks for your comment. The power station and the 2 solar panels would set you back about £1200 if you use the discount code in the description. Of course there are many cheaper, lower spec options for both the power station and the solar panels if you look on the allpowers website.

    This is great information, thanks for sharing! You're able to show that even poorly situated panels can provide meaningful production. Your data also provides a ballpark rule of thumb for others to think about if they're considering a similar installation. From your numbers: SE: 777.22 kWh production ÷ 2.58 kW capacity = 301 kWh per installed kW NW: 357.98 kWh production ÷ 6.88 kW capacity = 52 kWh per installed kW From a panel cost perspective, your NW production is about 6 times more expensive than your SE production. It takes roughly six Watts of installed capacity on the NW side to match the production a single Watt of installed capacity on the SE side. (edit) I was curious about predicted capacity for North and South facing arrays, so for my area, I plugged in a house with standard 45º roof pitches facing North and South. I was surprised when the PVWatts tool predicted that the South array would out-perform the North array by a factor of 2.5 over the year, and a factor of only 1.3 in May! Now I wonder why your experience is so different -- your SE facing array outperforms your NW array by a factor of 6 on an installed Watt-for-Watt basis. Hmmm. Because your SE array is in a corner, could it be receiving sunlight reflected from the adjacent roof? Hmm. IDK...

    Thanks for the comment. I'm afraid you've got those numbers around the wrong way. NW produced 777kWh and SE produced 357kWh. After a full year I'll post the annual figures and hope to identify some rules of thumb to more specifically help others.

    Great little review.Fair play to Allpowers for allowing a true review of their kit which let’s face it we all want to see.I hate it when we see reviews in “lab” conditions! We don’t live in a lab,your test of just throwing them out in the garden is exactly what will happen in the real world.Lets hope you get other equipment to test instead of it all being American based 👍

    Wow , that’s so wrong… the clearance around the pump doesn’t comply with the manufacturer instructions and also they use push fit pipe and fittings that is reducing the flow in the systems massively. Other problem, the solder joints near the pump , how they would flush that section of the pipe ? Hopefully they won’t flush the pump as well …

    Looking at this I see 3 opportunities to pretty much recharge a battery during each stage, so even at worst case where you needed to run the ASHP all day you could easily avoid the 3 hours of super high cost and at worst maybe need an hour of expensive energy. Most times it would work very well even with high usage. For me the 3rd slot would make a huge difference to knowing a battery could cope nicely.

    I've given up on a heat pump for the time being. Octopus quote was ~£3,800, but eventually they said they couldn't do it because I have underfloor heating which would affect the system pressure. I've repeatedly asked for more information from their design team to explain what this actually means but it's not forthcoming. So I requested a quote from British Gas and that came in at £9,500, based solely on the number of radiators in the property. They didn't even ask for the square meterage or number of bedrooms. Anyway, that starting point doesn't sit well with me, it seems like a setup. I've finally given in after 10 months of trying and ordered an oil delivery

    It seems that octopus installer are only offering JaSolar & givenergy and do only simple installation ,they are not offering a dual zone and are not offering any customisation , bear in mind that 1 or 50 panels would still need the fixed costs (including the installer and octopus margin) And yes the battery are super expensive !

    You keep saying North Facing in the video titles, but the NW and SE make a huge difference. My E/W facing panels are 7.56kWh and produced 832.1kWh35% to home, 1% to powerwall and 64% to the grid. Total home use was 1098.1kWh but that is almost all at night rate of 7 pence. That also included 197.41kWh of EV charging also done overnight. My battery was filling up overnight and allowing more solar to be sent to the grid and being paid 15 pence per kWh.

  • @UpsideDownFork

    Thanks for your comment. You are right. Part of the reason for including the north facing is to show those installers that it is viable to install beyond an almost perfect E/W split, which is what nearly every company parroted at me when I suggested SE/NW should be fine. Great to hear that your system is working well for you.
