As a drone and photography enthusiast, I like to take videos and pictures of just about anything, but find that I'm not sharing much of it; well, now I plan to post as much of it as I can on this channel. I also would like to help those that need advice in setting up their drone platforms the way I have. I'm also in the military and plan to eventually post some military related videos that I take, share some advice or answer questions regarding military topics. I would also like to know what the viewer interests are, so please feel free to ask any questions or make requests for what to post in the future. Please take note, I plan to keep this channel "G" rated as I want it to be a family channel for all ages.

    One of the best videos out there of setting this up. I have the same exact generator I bought from Harbor freight open box for $225 in 2019. We were lucky during the 2021 freeze here in Texas; we were on a critical circuit that they did not shut off. We have since moved to out to the country with this same setup where power outages are more common. I am able to power our 1 HP water well with this with room to spare. We shut off the breakers for our 5 ton AC unit and water heater. Everything else stays on. In the summer we have a couple small window units to cool a couple of rooms. In the winter, we have a wood stove. I have 50 gallons of gas on standby plus fuel from the farm trucks should we need it. It is essential that we keep our freezers running during an extended power outage to prevent thousands of dollars in food from spoiling. I may try to make a video one day of our setup. Thanks for taking your time to make this.

    Dumb question 🙋🏽‍♂️ Does it need to be grounded. ?

  • @JPG23
    @JPG23 Жыл бұрын

    Not a dumb question at all. Since it's bolted directly onto the body it is grounded; however, if you look closely at 4:38 between the battery power posts you can see a small jumper. That jumper is attached to 2 mounting points that were ground down to expose metal, thus making it a grounding point.

    Great idea! One thing to be careful of is that there is no sensing of engine condition at all. The use of a single loop that runs through the starter and choke engagement every time it gets power and the the long delay for runtime is functional, but not robust. If the wireless switch blinks, even for a moment while it is running, it is going to run the startup sequence all over again with the engine still running. Also, this depends on the engine being VERY repeatable in the start timing. As it ages, fuel changes, hot or cold, the timing of an engine start could change without the code being able to compensate. A big upgrade would be to put a hall sensor in the flywheel housing that detects engine RPM as the flywheel magnet passes by. Or a wire looped around the spark plug wire to act as an antenna would do the job without having to take the flywheel housing off. Something like this would work, just omit the LEDs for the timing light: www.instructables.com/Timing-Light-and-Tachometer-With-Arduino/ Write an interrupt function for RPM sensing and if (engineRPM > 2000 RPM) { engineRunning=true; }. Set a time flag when the engine run speed condition is reached, disengage the starter, and you're golden. Check for engine running each time through the loop and if not, set engineRunning=false. If you want to go further, you can check to see if a run is commanded but engineRunning==false, initiate a start sequence after waiting 10 secs or so. Instead of putting the start sequence in the loop that runs continuously, build a void coldStart and a void hotStart function with while loops that crank for, say, 10 seconds looking for the RPM to jump before stopping cranking or timing out to let the starter cool. The coldStart would have choke, the hotStart would not use choke unless it failed to start, then try a coldStart once more before timing out and throwing an error LED and/or alarm. A DS18B20 clamped to a lower part of the crankcase could sense if the engine was warm or cold and make a decision on which start sequence to attempt first. If you are running on propane or NG, put an electric prime solenoid in the fuel circuit and have the start sequence engage the prime solenoid until engineRunning==true. Also, the use of an ESP8266 or ESp32 dev board would give wifi monitoring and control. Just a couple ideas. Great start to the project!

    Can you use a regular car battery for a generator and what other kinds of batteries you can use for a generator ?

  • @JPG23
    @JPG23 Жыл бұрын

    Short answer, yes. Using a car battery to start a generator is like using pitcher to drink a glass of water. The car battery has way more cracking amps than the generator will ever need, but it won't hurt it. The main reason for the brand-specific batteries is so that it will fit in the spot intended for the battery, aside from that, as long as it's a 12V battery with the minimum required CCA, then it's good to go.
