    If I could put both my daughters in a public school(private to the yanks or fee paying to others) I would. The mandatory rainbow Noncer curriculum is replacing rigorous academic standards. Well it did about four decades ago tbh. I can barely pay bills on the remaining overdraft though. Thank goodness we still have cash for car booting every weekend to get life’s essentials.

    How is the 1st pro a pro, when it is the cause of the 1st con? A serious con you missed, is also the preservation/furtherment of more niche topics/intereste, which the state school system cannot afford to support. For instance classics, choral music, niche sports, such as; fives, real tennis, even school specific sports such as Eton football. It's worth remembering, Rugby football, despite being a creation of, and named after a public school, is now a major international sport. State schools, because they are stretched so thin, have to focus on only the most essential, utilitarian, education. It is detrimental to our society, and our nation, to further reduce access to more broad education.

  • @redbridgetuition
    @redbridgetuitionАй бұрын

    Yes, the first pro is the cause of the first con, but both can still be true. Private schools could be said to reveal some of the inadequacies of the current education system - and moreover - reveal the amount of investment required to create a world-beating education system. A school such as Eton is held in great international acclaim, and as someone privately educated myself, I benefitted from the depth and breadth of the curriculum. What's ironic is that a great institution such as Eton used to service the educational needs of the poor. Access to a fantastic education should not be the preserve of the wealthy alone.

  • @piney4562
    @piney4562Ай бұрын

    @redbridgetuition I agree in principle, however its a matter of practicality. Raising fees by 25% is only going to reduce the number of people who benefit from this education, and make it even less accessible for regular people. As you rightly pointed out, the first people to be excluded, will be persons accessing bursary, and scholarship schemes. In principle, everyone should be able to do, experience, and achieve anything, and everything regardless of wealth. But that is not a practical principle to uphold.

    Vague goal, vague results Beginning of the year goal for most people: “I want to lose weight” so if you lose 1pound from 1st Jan to Dec 31st - great!! You've reached your goal!! Specific goal, with specific results and followed to a t obsessively. Totally different results. Question is how many staying on path?

  • @redbridgetuition
    @redbridgetuitionАй бұрын

    So true. I guess it’s not just about staying on path, as we are humans and will most likely fall off at some point. The question is also do we get back on path or not.

    That's a good point, I guess there is quite a lot of crossover. I'd say this difference is probably more prevalent between the older and younger Gen Zs. The younger millennials and older Gen Zers have more in common in terms of the tech we had access to.

    Interesting listen...as a teacher in the UK I could definitely relate to alot of what was being said (especially in the why did you move section); I would however liked to have heard more of the pros and cons about teaching abroad rather the obvious: work life balance and financial compensation. For example: cost of living, holidays (more or less), opportunities for promotion, is it a 'soulless city'?, laws, safety, travel opportunities/costs, bonuses, making new friendships, kid friendly, healthcare, food.

    I believe another way exists. Fill the 3lt jug then pour it into the 5lt jug. Fill the 3lt jug again and pour it into the 5lt jug until the 5lt jug is full, leaving 1lt in the 3lt jug. Empty the 5lt jug. Pour the 1lt of water into the 5lt jug. Fill the 3lt jug and pour it into the 5lt jug. 1+3=4, job done.

    Fill 5G jug to top, fill 3G jug from 5G jug, that leaves 2G in 5G jug. Dump 3G jug out, dump the remaining 2G into now empty 3G jug. You know have exactly 2G in 3G jug with an empty 5G jug. Fill 5G jug full then fill the 3G jug (which has 2G in it) 1G from 5G jug, to the top with water from full 5G jug. Leaving you with 4G in the 5G jug.
