The question still lives! I think it’s over. I love analog, will likely get another one in the future, but using the Roland system 1m I couldn’t care less when it comes to how great it sounds when it comes to analog. Though I think Roland nailed it with their ACB tech to emulate their analog synths. But yeah, I’ll get another analog synth one day.

having had a microkorg for a few years now, I haven’t found a video that so clearly explains how to use the matrix to design such beautiful patches like you made! I’m more of a guitarist so menu diving gets really frustrating and interrupts the creative process for me. I would love to see a video like this about the minilogue, or maybe a comparison video between the two since they appeal to similar users. thanks so much for the video!!

I just sold my Microkorg S for a hydrasynth explorer because I got really tired of having to rotate each knob to "catch" whichever position the parameter is at, it adds so much time to designing patches. But man, having batteries and an in built speaker was so damn useful for playing around on the fly, and the white look of the S was so beautiful. now I'm starting to regret selling it 😭

I remember when virtual analog synths were introduced. We all thought they sounded great, and we had real analog synths already. I think the current scarcity of vintage analog synths has made people look at them through rose colored glasses. I had a Juno 60 and 106 and found them quite limited and cheesy sounding. I am a guitarist so maybe we see this differently.

The end user, the listener, isn't using an oscilloscope to analyze the wave shapes they're hearing from the keyboard players synth. If a band plays live, and they're using a digital synth, programmed with sounds similar to the analogue sounds played on the album, nobody's going to be complaining or asking for their money back. The singer might be 20/30 years older than when the recorded version got released. Singers voice change would have far greater significance than a swap from analogue to digital synth.
@johnnygorillas2 ай бұрын
that's true of course. Not only for live shows. 99% of the time a great musical idea will make a song great and not the type of instrument it was played on.

😂 Your explanation of FM is like me trying to explain it. It is complicated to explain for sure cause you’re not sure where really to start! My guess though is that if there’s 4 variables there it’s a 4 op fm. And FM generally works in the way of having one oscillator fm another oscillator. With FM synths though, you may have them working in different formats of how they feed into each other or algorithms. And that’s about where my explanation stops haha. I get the core idea of carrier waves etc but how that influences the note and you end up with glassy or harsh tones, I would have to study more. I do however love a lot of FM tones. I have a Bastl Pizza oscillator and I love that I can dial in some great tones very easily. That being said, it’s only a 2 operator oscillator. I guess I have some more experimentation to go. Really cool seeing an explanation of a piece of gear you’ve spent lots of time with. You’re right though, I think the OP-1 is excellent and that’s without playing with one. Seems to have a great balance of playability, visualization, exploration, and inspiring sounds and sound design. Who would have known on launch eh?

@@johnnygorillas that’s most people with a DX7. Cuckoo went through programming a DX7 at some point and that’s worth a watch! Something like Pizza or like the Digitone are great new approaches to have fm accessible and usable in more of a timbre shaping type of mode instead of presets though.
