    I know a lot are gonna say that "Its fantasy, why so serious" or "They only listen to the CN community" to which both arent entirely true. Yes this game is fantasy, but it is inspired and references real world cultures in the game despite Mondstadt/Liyue/Inazuma not being actual Germany/China/Japan. Because of this fact they gotta make sure that you can really feel the culture its taking from and that may include the people as well. See now the problem is that they have it like this for every region except the game itself isnt that diverse even apart from skin tone and color we have body shapes and sizes. Itto is supoosed to be muscular like in his art, why arent his arms buff? For the skin tones part with Natlan, think about it, a nation of fire and there's a hotter region. Cyno, Dehya and Candace come from the desert, wouldnt it make sense if their appearance reflected that? Not even just clothes but their tone and the same goes for Natlan characters considering the geography, inspiration and culture its referencing for the fantasy. Now for the CN community, they are nearly in a similar boat to us Global Players to an extent because smaller issues go unnoticed. From what I have seen and I know others have seen it too, Hoyoverse acts quickly to fix thing when They Get Into Legal Trouble whether its financial or just imagery on the company, the moment their money is being affected they wanna act it isnt all about CN being CN its about Money. I know many say the boycott wont work and to an extent it has a high chance of failing, but its still worth a shot because compared to Sumeru it has done way better.

    If you look at the demographics who play the game you know why they have no reason to care what "westeners" have to say. Its mostly coming from a place of "darker skinned people barely exist in china (and to a smaller degree japan/korea)" so people there arent likely to find them attractive/want to pay to get them, so less sales. East Asia is BY FAR Hoyo's biggest market. Yes there will still be people there who will want the representation but its nowhere near a mayority (not like this is not the case in the west, same applies here just to a lesser extent). In the end they already responded last week with their "its all fictional and not meant to represent anything or anyone from real life" comment they made a week ago. From a personal preference I think most the edited designs I've seen look better then the original, but if you genuinly have any hope of them changing something you are coping so hard. Hoyo is a company and all they care about is money, they likely had a meeting a couple of months ago about this very thing, weighing higher expected sales against outcry from the west, and they chose the former.

    @@wansper9297 I get it, and that’s why I made this video. It’s still important to add to the outcry and vote with our wallets by not spending. That’s the only way we can send a message and hopefully persuade them to change course for other characters. Or potentially show other creators like Hotta Studio and Kuro Games that there is a big gap in the market because people clearly still want these characters outside of China.

    Hi, I have an quite opposing opition on this issue when I compare it to you. While I must say, I would also liked if there were blacker characters, I personally dont see that it is that big of an issue. Firstly its fictional world, where they can do whatever they want. You cannot use the argument that they dont represent another cultures because they take inspiration from their traditions, instruments, music, rituals and so on. Also, there is an reason why they dont make them black, its chinese company, and for whatever reason, chinese appearently dont like blacks. Since chinese makes their biggest revenue, it is logical that they wanna make content appealing to them. That is the reason why they wont gonna change it and all those petitions are useless. Main goal of the game is to immerse you into their fictional world and not Represent you. I am from Slovakia, and I also am not freaking out that there are no Slovakians. I don't really wanna be that guy (Oh screw it I am BASICALLY that guy) but this boycott isn't working.... like brutal honesty. Genshin has shown it ONLY listens to it's Chinese players. Boycotting wont work because global revenues are not even their main source of income; It's the Chinese players that make most of their buck. The Neuvillette scandal has shown it is only and ONLY when Chinese players start complaining directly to the CCP of all things that Mihoyo ACTUALLY lifts a finger. It's only when their main revenue source dries up do they bend over backwards to actually do something. It doesn't help most of these Boycotts I've seen online only last for at best 2-3 days before they start playing genshin, and they are free to play in many situations. With all this in mind, yea it makes sense why Mihoyo doesn't care of their western audiences, they don't spend money, they complain about designs, and they are easily dealt with. I specifically say western audiences for a specific reason, because us Asians, barely ever complain. Heck I'm not afraid to say as a southeast Asian, I've spent genuine money on this game and so long as my favorite character isn't gutted, I'm fine with whatever the hell Mihoyo wants to cook and all the people I know who play genshin are fine with their character designs and could barely even care (they find this whole boycotting situation funny at best, and a Western problem at worst). Yes Sumeru was somewhat disappointing (Looking at you Candace and Dehya, the rest are fine honestly, if anything it fits the culture) Or TLDR: Western audiences does not matter to Mihoyo, because they are not the money makers, Chinese consumers are, and unless Western audiences start spending more than Chinese players, their opinions will, shall and always be invalid. But hey, if you have your own opinion's and think this boycotting will work, I'm not stopping you, good luck because you're going to need it

    While I do think that it is completely fair for you, and others, to be disappointed by Mihoyo's choice to not offer a bigger variety in diversity for Genshin. I do think that calling it appropriation, white-washing and racist to be unreasonable. People seem to think that Genshin is trying to represent different cultures within their world, this is not really the case, what they're doing is taking inspiration from different cultures of our world to make theirs seem more realistic, after all it is way easier to take inspiration than it is to come up with different and unique cultures all on your own. That difference is important, because while within a representation you need to be careful to be truthful to real life, inspiration does not need to subscribe to such notions. You wouldn't want to shackle creativity with something as benign as this, specially when Mihoyo isn't trying to pass this down as realistic representations of said cultures. Of course, it still doesn't justify their choice of not including more darker-skinned characters, the reason for that is most likely a cultural one. In China, fairer and pale skin are a beauty standard, so it makes sense for a company, who also lives on a culture where skin colour isn't as important as it might be on the west, to want to maximize their profits by releasing characters that they perceive to result on more sales. I do also want to add that it is unreasonable for us to expect them to change their culture and mindset to appeal to our own. Now, I'll say it again. I don't think it is bad for you to be upset or disappointed. I agree on you trying to showcase to Mihoyo that you, and many others, want darker-skinned characters, specially when it's likely that the higher ups are more hesitant on releasing darker-skinned characters due to the fear they might sell out less. But let's not take that disappointment and attribute malice to people on the other side of the world, who never gave us any indication that they would do things the way we expected them to.

  • @LikeAFemaleDog
    @LikeAFemaleDog14 күн бұрын

    @@neonchronicles Whether it is problematic or not that's not for us to decide, it's for them. We can appeal to their reason but to condemn them for it is unreasonable and overstepping. Whether it's right or wrong is meaningless, it's just reality. We wouldn't want to fall under the standards of the Middle-East when it comes to Gay representation for example. I look for the intention behind the action. Was it done with the intent of disrespecting the culture? Was it done as a way to mock the Culture? And so on. As far as we know it wasn't, so I don't find a problem with it even if it is appropriation by definition. I'd much rather have the culture represented in a way that is respectful than not being represented at all due to a fear of misrepresentation. I'd rather have people see the culture and be curious to learn more, than to never have the chance to see them at all. After all, the Culture is not just skin colour.

I get that this is a work of fiction and such. However I feel that it's kind of weird to use IRL culture and do a poor job at representing it. Again, it's their own creation and they can do whatever they want with it, which is understandable. Tho, I will say that are games that actually shows respect to the cultures compared to Genshin. Pokemon as an example, does a far better job at representing different cultures. Especially African and Latin cultures. Fate Grand Order beats Genshin out of the park with representing different cultures. Heck even Arknights and Azur Lane does it better than Genshin. Those two examples being games created in China. Genshin Impact is way better compared to other modern games that tried to "represent" local music styles, authentic to specific real world areas. That's the one thing they did right and I wouldn't even expect anything more from Hoyoverse. Skin color isn't the only way to represent culture, and I can brush that off, and yeah, they don't mix Japan/China or Germany/France, and they do mix India/UAE, but they never promised to deliver diverse cultural representation. And musically, they did make sure to keep different cultures separate in Sumeru. Natlan OST sounds great so far too. But the main reason I'm boycotting them is honestly the lolicon problem, I could brush it off before the ZZZ release, but now it's become too prominent. The adult characters act more childish, the new update is literally playground-themed, you can't escape the baby themes even if you try.

  • @AyoCoffeeSama
    @AyoCoffeeSama14 күн бұрын

    @@outlawsyl I didn't mention skin color in my original post since I was more focused on more important sections, tho I personally find it weird that they borrow from the culture and the name of a deity from said culture and pretty much just go OC with said character. However, as mentioned, they can do whatever they like with their brand. They can add pronouns in Genshin and I honestly wouldn't really care. It doesn't affect me. Anyway, Outside of that, Genshin does a poor job at representing cultures. It's not the best game for that. Since the games that I have mentioned, does it far better and shows actual respect/appreciate the culture. Tho, as for the music take. It's more of a subjective thing. Some thing that Genshin music > X game music and so on. Not familiar with ZZZ, so I won't touch on that subject. All I know is their lead artist or one of their main artist is a confirmed lolicon. Not really involved with hoyo games like I used to be. ZZZ in my opinion ain't for me. Wuthering Waves is just a better options, despite it being an open world while ZZZ isn't from my knowledge(?).

    IDK what you mean by representing culture. Because as far as ACTUAL culture and not just skin tone variety; Genshin beats all those games you mentioned. With maybe except FGO and that is a stretch given how many liberties it takes in interpreting historical figures and lore. Pokemon only takes surface level regional inspiration, hardly representative of real cultures. As for Azur lane and arknights. Just no, those games barely put focus on culture. Just because they have a variety of national background doesn't mean its culturally representative. Genshin despite taking place in a fantasy world represents the culture of inspiration much better with realistic cuisines, and lore accurately factoring in the myths of these regions. And they also put in a lot of effort on the tiny details from clothing, architecture, to even how they hold their weapons etc. these are niche things people not familiar with the culture miss. To me this means infinitely more than skin tone varieties just for the sake of it. The former requires actual effort and understanding. The latter is a cheap tool to keeo people quiet. That said more skin tone variety would be nice. I can give very specific examples about Genshin if challenged on its cultural details. I can't really do that for any of the games you listed except for FGO and I played them all.

They've shown that they can do the hard work of researching clothing, environments and architecture and implementing them into the game, but they always neglect representing the people behind them as well. In fact, it's even worse when you think about how most of the darker skinned characters in the game have bad gameplay kits, and how alot of these characters are also just NPCs or enemies you have to fight. It sends a bad message to the people they're taking inspiration from. Ethically, they're in the wrong. The question now is not whether they're right or wrong, but whether the "boycott" will even change anything. We've seen multiple instances where Hoyo only changes something when the CN community demands it, and very recently they were able to rollback the Neuvillette nerfs. Aside from the supposed blackout of Genshin from their own socials recently, they don't seem to be doing anything more. What's more frustrating is that the people who are boycotting don't seem to realise that boycotting means to stop interacting with Hoyo products completely, not just going F2P. Personally, I'm joining the boycott myself and have pretty much stopped playing Genshin. Maybe it won't matter in the end, but I can't keep supporting a company that actively ignores its community when it matters.

    @@koko-hh2bq thanks for sharing your thoughts! I agree the character nerfs for darker skinned characters and making enemies dark skinned sends a very bad message. Also agree on your view of what is ethical and not. They are being archaic and insensible if they don’t realize that. As for the boycott, it’s the best we can do to send a message. I do hope it has an impact this time around. The petition on Change.org is a good start.

    I don't think they're trying to send any message, they are following media tropes in anime that are rooted in racism, they're not using them to spread racist beliefs though, just for better sales. But personally, it does make me uncomfortable to see represantation of non asian cultures in enemies instead of the playable characters. I'd rather they made everyone asian, but they clearly know how to make good designs inspired by other cultures, and that's how they use it

    Is the correct representation really important? For example, characters with Slavic names from a nation based on slavic countries, the game is often presented in the form of negative characters. Theoretically, it should be much worse than wrong skin colors. But Genshin is popular in Russia and other Slavic countries, despite this.

  • @neonchronicles
    @neonchronicles11 күн бұрын

    @@cpazmatikus3752 I think the Slavic characters aren’t bad per se, but western audiences view them as such if they’re closed minded. I think it’s all a red herring because we just don’t know their true motives yet. We also don’t know if Celestia is good or the gods are good, and if anything they are the true villains in the story. So if anything the Fatui might have a redemption arc still as shown by the complex characters that make up the Harbingers and the fact that Lumine is siding with them. I think it makes their representation even more spot on because the west often villainizes them in media, even when they’re not the villains.

    Honestly, Mihoyo didn't have the goal to portray rightfully the places from their inspiration. As a french, even Fontaine french representation was quite lacking and based on clichee, And i think that was fine in a fantasy world to do as you want, they mixed up in the previous region UK and France and the result was fine as a fictional world, because even in the outfits, fontainian costume were not that close from the real one (a lot of asymetry to make them look good, too much accessory,...). So seeing this problem being relevant only for Sumeru and Natlan, i'm asking myself: does the problem really cultural appropriation OR peoples targeted by it? And in this I have my answer, ideas of respect for minority coming from USA are most of time good but forget to impose limit to it. So they think that culture from some people are almost sacred and doesn't have to be modified by any means. But this can't happen, 1: if you can't use a culture by fear to make a bad representation of it, this cultures will be forgotten, 2: cultures are not stuck in time and influence each others even if this was by mistakes. For exemple, the word "Ammo" came from french: "La munition", with englishmen thinking it was one word: "L' ammunition". The White House is the result of the Neo-classicism movement, which were the false idea that ancient greek buildings were full white. Another point: thinking Mihoyo to be intentionaly disrespectful to minority is nonsense, we talk about a company using queercoding for years, the reason of this designs are not political but economical, the China is their biggest market and in China, black peoples are not that appreciated so releasing character like this can be detrimental for the company. So you can say that they are cowards more than racists. Finally I will say that more than that, Mihoyo never made the oath to make an accurate representation of each places (the fact to make a region from South-america, Central-africa and Pacific islands was a good clue). And saying, that it will be detrimental for peoples from this region is quite a suposition. Islanders apart we talk about ancient civilizations with almost no people remaining from it, then you can say "but by portraying them the wrong way, they will be forgotten", wrong again, you thought that common folks had any idea of what the Yoruba civilization was? Before the Natlan region, surely not that much. This is paradoxal, peoples think that Mihoyo will make this civilization wrong, but by searching the origin of the names, arguments to explain why this design are wrong, I think this civilizations never had such interest from commoners. And it will continue with us exploring the region and making theory, here lies the conclusion: Does the culture from this civilizations ends with the color of their skin? If the inspirations used for the story was badly represented but characters had a dark tone skins, would it be such a drama? Don't hesitate to answer to all my points, I don't see myself as the Truthholder.

    @@xenor2655 thank you for sharing your opinion! I agree that fantasy doesn’t always have to be accurate to reality. I personally find it a missed opportunity for a company who wants to “save the world” with technology and games that appeal to a global audience. How can they expect a global audience to back their mission if half the world is not represented in their creative endeavors? This was their chance to change the negative bias people have towards dark skins much like Pokémon did in the past, and Blackpink’s Lisa is aiming to do with her solo music career. It’s not unheard of in Asia, it’s just uncommon. And from Hoyo, I was expecting the best, most culturally relevant ideas, not outdated ideals. In my opinion, using whitewashed shades of eggshell is a traditional, purist, and exclusive beauty standard that needs to be dismantled.

    @@neonchronicles You're absolutely right but the "tech otaku save the world" is a slogan, never an oath. Mihoyo tried by the past to break this traditional ideals but in the country of the CCP, each of the measures got reported by some angry chinese fans and Mihoyo faced a lot of problems. You talk from a country with high degree of freedom to speach but for Mihoyo, the politics are something to deal with and they will always agree with their chinese fans (they already did for Natlan with only 3 males characters because Chinese audience want females). the only thing that will make this company move is a huge and long boycott but this will never happen.
