If Mr Holland only knew how liberal arts in universities are centers of leftist identitarianism, resenting opinions and racial slandering, progressivism, and Marxism. They discovered that they could use these areas of study to further indoctrinate the youths that captured through elementary and High School. After their liberal arts degrees are earned, on loans that'll never get paid back, they'll immediately pursue a career in community organizing to eventually be groomed by political parties like the Dems and the DSA. What a jip!

@@allenbatista2908, just a movie huh. Strange how I remember commercial jingles from times past, slogans from TGIF, laugh machines from everything, just to cue us how to feel. I'm well above it, and probably yourself as well, but can you say that about early and pre teenagers? Children soak up everything like a sponge, and movies are just another means to saturate them with nonsensical politics, identitarianism, and propaganda. They've always done this to us, and they're getting much better at it. I see the patterns, the products, and the morality they parade in front of our eyes, and once you see it, you cannot un-see it.

Schools have no business teaching art, music or drama because those subjects mean nothing to an employer who has to make a living and earn profit. Unless you are a Hollywood type you must realize that normal people have to work for a living. Very few will pay for musicians, artists or acting but people do pay for people who are educated in something useful like mathematics, sciences, business, or marketing. There should be a special school which deals with the arts and it should be attended by those interested in learning things that probably will cause starvation in the future. Maybe one school per city ....maybe

  • @pbkayakyer

While I can certainly agree that schools should FOCUS on the basics, you're absolutely wrong about art, music and drama not meaning anything to an employer. There are intangibles that are, music and drama can teach us that are absolutely essential to employers. Soft skills are so much more desirable to employers than "hard" skills. Anyone can learn to do a job, but the soft skills are much harder to teach adults. The arts can teach kids those soft skills.

5:10 - these lines, how they'd never cut the football program, were the one I remembered most from the movie (that and the sign language for asshole, haha). It made him sound petty, petulant, and it created an awkward situation for his friend who was trying to comfort him. I get it that he hates the arts programs were under-appreciated/under-valued vs. the sports programs, but in high school the sports programs typically bring in more revenue than the arts. Ideally you'd have both but under the circumstances, its not surprising. But more to the reason I didn't like this part of the movie, I think it was a d*ck comment to say right in front of his friend.

"I don't think you have any appreciation for our financial problems", says one of the Board Of Trustees during the part at the meeting. Just one question; what exactly is there to appreciate in regards to the school's financial problems, especially if cutting a certain program means that certain teachers will immediately lose their jobs as a result of those said financial problems? If a certain program makes the cut, not only will it disappoint students who partake in those activities, but it will also result in teachers being placed on the unemployment line. Plus, Mr. Holland made an excellent point stating that by cutting the music program could lead to a generation of students who will not to know how to think for themselves and be forced to live by the code that most of the older generation expects them to live by. It just comes to show that most schools around the nation prefer to maintain the actual curriculum (i.e. Math, world history, etc...) and not much to teach them about Mozart or anything else in regards to the fine arts. It's all about the money, not about the students' rights to think for themselves.

  • @FingerGunProductions

If you drop a program like that then you won't have to pay the teachers, pay for music equipment and so on. They will be saving money. That's what they mean by "I don't think you have any appreciation for our financial problems." They are trying to save any money that they can.

I like to think President Obama bases most of his decisions based on virtue instead of political clout. I think to say no leaders do the same is unfair. I think someone like President Bush made decisions based on political clout (avenging his father with the war in iraq). He makes compelling points, but unfortunately I can't buy them. He's basically working off the premise of 'I'm evil, you're evil, they're evil, we're all evil. So what's the difference?' It makes me question who he is as a person and the people he knows. I certainly wouldn't trust him holding my purse.

In the big picture, those are relatively minor issues, aren't they? It annoys me how Glenn Beck instantly calls Tomas Sowell a conservative. It is so that Sowell is well to the rightern side of politics, but that does not mean he is a conservative. The conservatives basis of political analysis, is mainly traditions. Accepting a political theory because it is old, not because it is rational nor well functioning, is stupid and ignorant. Tomas Sowell knows better than this. He is a libertarian, NOT a conservative.

The real argument is to show that if everywhere raised taxes on the rich, it still is a bad idea because it reduces relative investment and changes resources from what people want to what a third party (that doesn't much care) thinks that they want.

Capitalism is the natural state of all economies, from ancient barter-systems to our modern global system, Socialism by comparison is an IDEAL. It is not a natural system, and by result, it has no empirical evidence to support it. So socialists must resort to EMOTIONAL arguments, trying to pull at people's heartstrings, without realizing that Capitalism is the reason we have all of the wonderful technologies today.
