    From tenacious horses to dogs, I've found once an animal hits that fence and gets zapped, they never ever cross it again. For people who think it's cruel... All my dogs and horses are safe ony ranch, and my neighbors have lost all kinds of animals to cars and traffic thinking a 1 second shock is too cruel

    Does your cost of input make the top 5 list? If you don't buy any feed and just rotational graze do you think it effects your profit margins?

  • @rollingofarm
    @rollingofarm19 күн бұрын

    For my operation, feed is mostly a liability. I know people make a profit raising them in barns with only bought hay and feed, but I don’t have experience with that. I rationally graze 8-9 months of the year and feed hay for 3-4 months a year with almost no feed.

    Great video - thank you. I'm realizing temporary electric fencing is not sustainable (it's a pain to move every few days and risks killing the goats in tangles as you mentioned so that defeats the point). I need better fencing for rotational grazing. I think I'm going to go with the horse/goat/sheep exterior fencing and electric dividers. We have rocks and mountain land so fencing with land that is not level is no easy task. Also - if you live in Montana the fish & wildlife teams help get funding for electric to hold out the grizzlies/mountain lions/wolves. They cover some of the cost as well so it's worth reaching out if you need it.

    Great job explaining the different classes of dewormers and how to administer them. I'm familiar with the Famacha scoring system and administering (having worked for a large animal vet many years ago), but your video was helpful in the particular details and how to best use them to keep the parasite load low/manageable in goats and sheep.

    I think you can get more money for goats where there are more ethnic communities. In the USA that means the south.

  • @rollingofarm

    I've heard that sheep see fences as their safe place; Goats see fences as a challenge. (No experience with sheep, but this is definitely true for goats. One time a friend and I spent 2+ hours preparing fencing only to have her bucks immediately take two flying leaps right out 😂🤦‍♀️)

    You may be able to calm them down by daily feeding a little grain. They may get use to seeing you and equating it with a treat. It may take a few weeks, but they may help.

    Thanks for putting these videos out. I am wondering if you mow each paddock after you move the animals out? If not, does it matter if the less desirable grasses/plants go to seed?

  • @rollingofarm
    @rollingofarmАй бұрын

    Great question! I’m doing some experimenting with mowing vs not mowing. Through the years I only mow once in the Fall or not at all. But I do have a lot of undesirable weeds. Maybe in the future I can give you an answer as to which is better.

Even including some of the natural stuff we're using (seeding our pasture with lespedza also forage chicory , occasionally feeding black walnut forage and adding bit of ACV to water. Good explanation of the different chemical dewormers and how to administer drench vs injection in an easily understandable way . Thank you!

    is there a risk of weeds touching the electric fence and starting a fire????

  • @rollingofarm
    @rollingofarmАй бұрын

    Usually if the grass is dry enough to burn it will not have enough moisture to conduct a current even if touching the fence. However there can be a danger if the fence is down or shorting so that it is causing a spark that can ignite dry grass.

    Check out bifold disappearing gates. They are nice because there is nothing protruding out from the race that you need to walk around when moving up and down the chute. You might be able to find a picture in an older premier catalog. They were made by a UK sheep equipment company called Poldenvale.

    Thanks. So, its best to have at least 8 fields for rotation? Can you put horses in a field that you just moved goats out of? Or, will they also get the same worms?

  • @rollingofarm
    @rollingofarmАй бұрын

    If you do weekly rotations, eight paddocks works very well. It is OK to put horses in, because they do not get the same parasites as Goats and Sheep.
