Great clean up... The other problem on these as well as the Lionel version is the capacitors on the circuit board get weak, or leak. The worst ones will only buzz. So the more buzz you have, then the time to replace them is closer. Replace with same value and rating. Voltage can be higher but Mf must be the same or very close.. + and - matter as well...
@jlebaron119 күн бұрын
thanks! Yes the capacitors can be replaced if needed. Also you can replace a bad Marx board with a Lionel sound of steam board and they will work. Thankfully Marx used a better brand of capacitor than Lionel did on their earliest boards so they usually work with this tune up

@@jlebaron1 I have many things to get to and one of them is the Bachmann sound board that is found in their G scale steam tender. It is much like the Lionel and MarX but has another transistor. Once I figure out that circuit I might build some more to be used in any o gauge steamer without sound.

Ray, thanks for the encouragement! Glad to be of help. I'm sure it's possible to put an E unit in Marx loco but have never done one. I would think an American Flyer tender would be a good candidate as the E unit is mounted there and you could run the wiring to the motor just like AF did

That is an impressive consist. More than likely the traction tire needs to be replaced. The MPC era passenger cars don't weigh as much as the post war cars from the 1950's and 1960's so the 4-4-2 shouldn't have any trouble hauling your friend's consist. Incidentally, my neighbor gave me a box of Lionel trains in very rough shape, loco and whistling tender inoperative, trucks oxidized, shells filthy, etc. The set was a 1515 WS from 1954. A few prayers, much elbow grease, WD40, contact cleaner, new wires soldered, etc. has brought this set back to life. The loco is a 2065 Hudson, messed up E unit, corrosion, etc. I don't like working on E units but I got it repaired and this loco zips around the track.
