Watch the movie. Its brilliant. Proper old fashioned bollywood movie. Sooo late 70's. Two heavyweights in it. It was the biggest hit of that year in fact a blockbuster. The macho energy in the movie and the toughness gave us the strength and energy to be not afraid and go out and fight skin heads here in the uk. In the early 80's We were no longer afraid, this movie helped to give us courage, along with other movies like disco dancer, naseeb. Even racist skinheads were afraid of amitabh bhachan and mithun chakraborty. ! So these movies were instrumental in us coming out of our shells when we were youth.
This song is ruling the hearts of generations in India. It still is. And yes, you have reacted the on the song O SAATHI RE earlier from the same film. This is Amitabh Bachchan era. The 70s n 80s. Of course he is still hugely popular. His era has never ended. Many actors tried to overpass him, but no one comes closer to the love and affection he gets from the people. audiences coming of out theatre after watching KALKI 2898 are talking about HIM only. At 82, he did all his action sequence. The MAN is miracle, a GOD'S GIFT to the world of cinema. And over the years (more than 50) the range he has shown in performing so many various characters is unmatched.
In the Mujra songs of Tawaifs/courtesans... Rekha has upscaled the bar with her expressive renditions in Umraojan. Watch Dil cheez kya hai and In aankho ki masti ke from the movie. Please don't mistake the new Umraojan with Aishwarya in it. She ruined it totally. The other such mujra songs are from the 60s movie Pakizah...Meena kumari is not a dancer but has nailed it with her expression... And then there is Madhuri in Devdas which you have already seen
I hope now you realise why Rekha was fifty times better in old and original Umrao jaan compared to Aishwarya Rai in the new, crappy, big budget Umrao jaan. If you want to get real flavour of Indian films then watch films and songs before 1990, the older, the better.

You are able to articulate brilliantly the nuances of the song despite not knowing the language. Rekha is trained kathak dancer so she can pull it off. Her expressions comes from dance training. This dance setting is called mujra where people drink and watch the dansseur perform. Similar to cabaret. But it was not like theater where everyone is allowed entry. Not family audience setting if you get it.
I don't recall which other song from MkS you've reacted to but the title song and O Saathi Re (couple of versions in the movie) are also classic....would love for you to check them out

She is a courtesan - yes like Madhuri was in Devdas. Watch Heeramandi and you will understand the courtesan culture that used to exist in India.
