Share in the adventures of two (kind of) young expatriates of the urban jungle as they attempt to homestead off the grid in the Hawaiian jungle.
One is an animal lover, and the other is obsessed with rare tropical fruits.
Between the two of them, things never stay boring for long!

Love it!
That was great!!! Never knew you could do that. I'm loving it!!! 😊
It works with fruit trees in your area too! You could do this on an apple tree, for example!
Im so freaking excited for you!! Congrats!! I have some questions though as i would love to do this too!!
If you have questions, let me have them! I'm happy to answer anything I can!
@TheIslandHomestead Awesome thank you! I was wondering which lava zone you purchased in and did you finance or pay in full for your home? Do you pay an HOA? What's the crime like in your area? Mahalo nui loa!
@Amandamaui71 We bought the land with cash. Our lava zone is 3. We haven't financed anything as we are building off grid and loans for that are funky. We don't have a HOA. Crime is everywhere to some degree, but it's mostly petty theft and dumping. Don't leave valuables visible in your parked car, anywhere. There's also some meth related crime from time to time, but they travel, so there's no escaping that.
@@TheIslandHomestead thank you for your info!
@@MandaHawaii 😁🤙
I missed it this year. I figured I had too much to plant anyway. I did run into two pedalai, so I'll be growing those as well.
I missed it too! My backlog of plants has ballooned, and I need to get stuff in the ground! Pedalai is a great one! I just wish they didn't want to get SO BIG!
I just bought grafted plant of this from nursery after watching your video (from India)
You're on for a treat! They're my absolute favorite navel orange to eat. The only other one that even comes close is the Tangelo, and that's a drinker, not one for eating.
@@TheIslandHomestead you should try Indian Punjab KINNOW for juice
The beauty of Puna. Busting your knees over some lava rock is a rite of passage as keiki. Now it seems like I'm spending more of my days digging them out of the ground lmao I could tell just by the color where you got your dirt from.. hamakua soil is KILLA. Used to work on an organic orchard that side and that stuff is most definitely primo. Love watching you get stuff done and always grateful for the info. Keep dat back nice and spry braddah, no work too hard!
I don't know which has more scar material, my shins or my knees! Ones always busted up!
Great info Peter!!! Way to get some work done with that Kubota!!! 💪
Thanks Donna! I do what I can!
Wonderful video!
Thanks Mark! I really appreciate it!
Just got a calamondin like tree today Super happy and can't wait until it matures more
That's great! They're fantastic little trees!
Instantly subscribed. I've lived in Puna my entire life and have only now gotten the gardening bug. Today I learned I had a nitrogen fixing plant in my backyard the whole time. Wow.
That's great! They're fantastic trees!
good timing, been raining for over 7 weeks straight since 🤙
You're right about that! I can't get enough dry days to finish painting!
How big is your lot?
We originally started with a 4 acre lot. Later, the 4 acre lot next to ours came up for sale and we were lucky enough to purchase it. So we have a little over 8 acres total.
But most of it is jungle!!!
@@TheIslandHomestead We bought 3 acres back in 2012 up the mountain. We picked up another 3 in 2015 about 2.6 miles down the road for our kids. Love what your doing. Some day
@MarktheShark808 Very nice! Great to be able to have family nearby!
Wonderful video!
Thanks! It's been a wild ride!
🤙🤙
😁🤙
fire
Thanks!
Well that was amazing just as all of your other videos!!! 😊
😁
Wonderfully informative as usual! love the content
Thanks! I'm always happy people like to hear about my plants! 😆
Just got the green version. Had no idea it came variegated.
You'll love it! It's legitimately my favorite orange. I know people are always hyping whatever it is they're doing, but with no hyperbole whatsoever, if I could share one orange with the world, it would be this one!
yummy!
Very much so!
Bring this tree to me
I'll be happy to! But I don't know how New Zealand customs would feel about that!
Aye..if nz customs all good they my cuzzies..tell em kotuku sent you@@TheIslandHomestead
@@kotukuwhakapiko467 🤣🤙
will this grow in germany?? lol
Depends... how big is your greenhouse?!? 😆
@@TheIslandHomestead lol nope not big at all... guess i am out of luck
@TheSkitchCrew Well, maybe a longer term goal then?
@@TheIslandHomestead i will just have to come visit you and see you guys :)
@@TheSkitchCrew WELL COME ON OVER!!!
Thank you for making this video. I remember very well, thanks to your video, when my mother would take us to visit my grandmother in a small town area in Nicaragua. With my sister and cousin, I remember my uncle shared this DEVINE sweet dessert that for me it was a fruit. I was 6 years old in my country that I have not yet visited. I remember the smell and the taste.
I'm so glad this brings you fond memories! I know this is a very popular fruit in Central and South America. I'm so happy to hear from someone who has experienced this fruit in its natural habitat!
I am very thankful for the making of this video. I will shred it to my son who is 12 years old.
@70rodal I hope he enjoys it! If you ever come here, message me and I'll try to find some for your visit!
@@TheIslandHomestead thank you so much.
Will this grow in Florida?
Depending on where, yes! It's both drought and freeze sensitive, so if you're somewhere that's pretty warm, yes, absolutely! It's actually vary popular down in Homestead for soil building!
@@TheIslandHomestead Awesome, tnx! And Homestead grows everything, I should've known I could probably find it there. Tyvm
Absolutely!
Good video! Straight to the point, and informative.
I hope there's something useful in there for you!
@@TheIslandHomestead Absolutely! Our tree hasn’t fruited yet, so we’ve not yet tried it out. So now I’ll know how tell if it’s ripe or not and I won’t be alarmed if they’ve sprouted, that’ll just be a nice bonus. 😁👍
@LearnLivePrepare Is it Inga Edulis too? I have an Inga Spectabilis (machete ice cream bean) that hasn't fruited yet, but I'm really looking forward to it!
@@TheIslandHomestead Tell you the truth, I’m not completely sure, but I’m leaning toward Edulis from the photos online. It’s been in the ground for maybe a year now.
@LearnLivePrepare Most likely it's Edulis then, it's the most common, though there are several varieties within the genius.
Very nice and informative Peter! Love it! 😊
This is a fun one. I hope you can try it someday!
video is very good and interesting explanations are very important
Thanks for watching! I have a third variety that sadly wasn't fruiting at the time. Maybe next time!
Very informative! Ours always has worms in them 🙁 Thank you for sharing your knowledge friend 😁
I've heard that's an issue, but we rarely have worms. I think they're more interested in all the strawberry guava! Thanks for watching!
Wow! You are an amazing, capable, brave couple! Pretty darn cute too! Love your videos.
Thanks! We do what we can! 😆
That was great! I have to admit I laughed pretty hard at the fall! 😂 Glad you’re ok! Stay safe!
I'm not too proud to say that REALLY HURT!
Ouch!!! But your house is going to be AMAZING!!!
If I can ever finish it! 😆
👍👍Big sucker of a passionfruit
It's the largest I'm aware of, that's for sure!
I'm a big fan! I love all of your videos!!!😊
I was wondering how long it was going to take you to show up! 😆
@@TheIslandHomestead 🤣🤣😊
Curious to see how Tesla powerwalls do offgrid.
Us too! 😆 So far so good!
The old power walls were not made for full off grid however the new ones are much improved. There is less expensive options out there. Most of power walls benefits relate to grid tie / auto bidder
@adamd5013 You're absolutely correct, but my wife is a project manager for a solar installation company, so you take what the employee discount gives you! So far so good, we've been using the solar for a few months, and we never want for power!
Our trees are packed this year, I'm trying to find a way to do marmalade (not jam) but can't get around removing those slippery seeds 😵💫.
Yes, the seeds are very small and hard to separate. So, with marmalade, are you going to use the skins? I wonder how that will work. 🤔
@@TheIslandHomesteadno, for the marmalade I remove the skin which is relatively easy, the hard part is the seeds.
@silarem Yes, the skin is rather bitter so I was wondering. As for the seeds... I can see how that would be complicated.
That ending though! I thought it looked hella uncomfortable to walk/stand on the support beams like that. What a lot of amazing work you guys have done, and the results look incredible!
Thaks! I'm gonna be honest, I didn't walk right for at least a month. That was SUPER painful! 😆
Oh shoot! You're doing it FOR REAL! 🎉
Yeah, and the state of my lower back is proof!
Great video Peter!!! I have to admit, I cried a bit, and I laughed a bit.
Him too! 😂❤
I wanted to cry when I fell like that! 😆
@@TheIslandHomestead I'll bet!
Love it! Great job! Very informative!
Glad you liked it!
I would wear a dress in ANY of the colors of that fruit! 😍
From green to yellow, then rose/pink to maroon, and finally the rich purple you see here!
Woow that is important video 😮❤
Wooow super ❤😮
It was pretty cool looking. The video makes it look fake or photoshopped, but no! It really is that super bright pink!
Doesn't a lack of oxygen do this to water?
It's a bacterial bloom of Halobacteria. The high salinity content of the water creates an environment favorable to this particular bacteria.
Seriously? How stupid are you people?
I'm afraid I don't follow. Who is stupid and why?
That was never there!! 😮 Do you think it is related to the fire ? I'd be curious as to the timing of this. Pink is not good.
Not related at all, unless you mean that the current drought contributed to both. The park service has sent samples to be tested, and preliminary results indicate that it's not toxic at all. Just nature doing its thing!
I loved your adventure to the pink pond!!! Great job!!! 👍 😊
What an awesome little adventure! Thank you for sharing <3
Dope bro 😂
Thanks!
I thought it was a kumquat and a key lime
I don't know that genetic sequencing has ever happened, but everything I've read seems to agree the mandarin orange is the most likely parent.
@The Island Homestead yeah i think you're correct ! You would think it would be sweeter calamondin is still my favorite tree easiest to grow indoors
@slicktmi Absolutely! Thitian lime is a cross of Key lime and lemon, maybe that's what you're thinking of?
@The Island Homestead yeah possible i get all the varieties mixed up there's so many!
@slicktmi You're right about that. So much variety in the genius to begin with, then all the hybrids! It's a lot to keep track of!
What is your elevation? Great content.
Thanks! We're around 850 ft.
Must make more videos!!!
I'm only a one and a half person production crew! This is a ton of work! Maybe I should get into inflatable hot tub reviews, that seems easier.
Yeah! What she said! Here here!
