Welcome everyone to RedNeck Ham Radio. This channel is geared toward looking at the Ham Radio hobby from a not so elegant perspective and maybe help some folks who are like me "a redneck" understand some of the techno hoopla associated with this awesome hobby. I hope to make this as pleasurable an experience for you as I can. You and I can learn together about this wonderful hobby we call Ham radio and work the world on every band.

Another idea is that I have heard some hams use aluminum screen door mesh for the ground plane instead of radials. I wonder how that would work with you 10m.
I'm sure it would work fine as a ground mounted vertical but seems to me that it would become a heavy wind load in put high in the air. Just my thoughts.
So its been a long time since you posted any videos...I hope you are doing well. I was at a garage sale and saw an old beat up CB mag mount antenna for $2. Well, being the packrat that I am I had to buy it. SO I was thinking; Could I modify it and use it on 10m? I am just a tech (failed the general 3x, I hate taking test)
Thanks...yeah It's been awhile. You might be able to shorten it up enough to work on 10m. My recommendation for studying for the general test is to go through the entire question pool so that you have seen every question and then start taking practice tests until you start making passing grades on the practice tests. After that take more practice tests until you start making in the 90's. By then you should have seen every question multiple times and have them memorized. I know you can do it.
thanks!
that air-core choke is exactly what I was thinking I'll need for my 20 and 40. I like this setup a lot.
Thanks for the video!
Gud stuff.. de N5YSW
Really appreciate your help in getting a simple solution for a vertical antenna. Near darn least expensive too 💡💡 4:41 pm on Rainy Day in the hills of Middle Tennessee. So many other channels offer more expensive options Congratulations in accomplishing your goals first time around ! ! 73 Steve AA4SH
Thanks for explaining that Watching the grayline is more important than anything 👀 Maybe also not running over the fence post with my Tractor , unfortunately also had delivery trucks run over their fair share as well. Thanks for sharing this video. I will subscribe to your channel next. 73 Steve AA4SH
Great vid! The song "a country boy can survive" popped into my head.
That’s what it’s all about having fun and making contacts.
Hi mate. I'm from the UK and an ex Royal Signals Engineer who is only starting to get back into the radio scene after a good few years out. Your video may not have had all the bells and trimmings that other channels have but never the less, shows that your a proper decent person trying to show other folk how to save money and get an antenna built and working, you did what you intended to do. Just wanted to say well done and keep up the channel
That is no longer just a Bass Boat…. It’s also a mobile aquatic HF transmitter research station…🤙🏻… Roll Tide and Go REBS !!! Awesome video buddy
I made this antenna today and it worked great thanks for the advice and the video 🎉
Can you usr electric fence wire or does it need to be copper insulated?
Someone finally showed me how to make an antenna with stuff I have thanks for your video
New subscriber here. I am tuning a pack of 4 Shark sticks for my truck while on the road. We live in Texas and are in Florida for grand baby time. I have a red neck carrying case for my Kenwood 520ST and solar charge controller and the like. Like you say it is a hobby of exploring. Who knows we might be able to have QSO when traveling back through Mississippi. All the best, 73 de KI5HXM
Congrats on the Grandbaby. I sure hope you are getting to work some of this amazing 10m dx.
Make whatever you have on hand work. That was pretty much my setup for Winter Field Day for our club, but was using a 17' vertical with a Wolf River coil on 40M. I was surprised to hear my CS getting that POTA! Just subscribed. 73 de N4WLC Bill
what is that home made choke.. 3" or 4" PVC with like 5 turns?
If my memory serves me I believe the pvc was 2 inch.
I am a 30 year Tech. I need to try 10 Meters since the band has been opened up so much, this year. Thanks! PS. Heading to Biloxi, this weekend. Hope the weather has been good your way!?
Nice Pro Craft boat!
I've had nothing but good luck with my hamsticks, especially the 20 meter because it works all across the band without adjustment. The 40 meter works across the entire band with a tuner. 20 meter hamstick on a fencepost? Reminds me of what they say about duct tape... Don't laugh. Fixed is fixed!

Where did you go dude? We miss you!
Don't leave me hangin Brad I need new content.
Excellent thanks very much
I like your thinking and Enginuity. I did something similar for 20 meters. Just used stuff laying around. Gary KF6EWO
Hello from west Virginia and how long is your coax
Well done. Thank you. DE VY2MJ. Cheers!
I have an 840 top and cannot get digi rig to work. Someone suggested the external speaker jack instead on the band data jack thoughts 🙏
I don't have very much experience with the digital modes. I did purchase a device to act as an interface for ft8 on the big auction site. If my memory serves me correctly I did use the ext speaker jack for the audio. I made 1 ft8 contact then went in the house to build me a sammich. A thunder storm came up whilst I was in the house and lighting took out my interface. That's about the extent of it.
Mathematical elegance ( creating the most effect with only the required elements) is the bet possible result.
Can you tell me how many meters are the cable lengths? TA3BFZ 73
Sorry but I didn't measure the final lengths after I tuned the antenna.
Your Video title made me watch your video. I Subscribe !!!
PVC pipe with 12AWG copper wire inside works great.
I used a handheld cb radio for traveling marine band radio frs
Great demo. Setting the standard for code of conduct. It's always a pleasure to hear polite operators wait their turn. But the icing on the cake is making that DX QSO on a home made antenna. AI5BL, DE W4EMB. 73.
I've never talked do anybody cuz like I say I don't have license but if anybody is close to me I'm not young I'm 64 but I need somebody more experience in this equipment
I've been studying for my M license I have ham radio equipment that I listen on two different band I can't get on their talk because I don't have license so I can only listen
Can some of you guys it's in Mississippi tell me where you're at in Mississippi I'm in Pass Christian Mississippi and I've been studying for my ham license
I have just had your channel pop up as a recommendation and I have to say, love the presentation and content. None of this fancy tech stuff, just basic knowledge, basic materials and getting on the air. I played around on CB way back in the 70's and 80's but never really got too involved, but 5 years ago a buddy suggested I take my Foundation Licence (I think that is your Tech) and get on the amateur bands, well that was it, hooked. I love nothing more that to build simple resonant antenna's from all sorts of cheap bits and pieces and get them out working. My preferred ops is QRT/P, mainly due a lack of HF at home, but I have a reasonable VHF/UHF set up in the shack. Thanks for sharing.......
Very down to earth kind of guy. I’d get along with you easy. I enjoyed the video I really did. 73s to you. KG4ENZ.
That antenna is grounded. You need to ground all the coax coming into the shack. Best to put lighting protection on them. It doesn't cost much for the lighting protection and it helps clean up the RF coming in.
Hey, if it works for you that’s all that matters. Your RFI issues have to do with common mode current. A good 1:1 choke or air balun using a balanced line multiband dipole (doublet) should take care of the problem.
I’ve picked up skip waves with this cheap Cobra I got and the cheap antenna on the roof of my car
Thanks for sharing! Might have to get some of those sticks now! Cheers and 73! See W3LAM
Fun to watch. Thanks
I'm in Pass Christian Mississippi are you close to me anywhere I would love to talk to you I had been wanting to get in the hobby I have the radios I just need to take my test
Shoot me an email at [email protected]. We can exchange information.
AI5BL, great video. I've actually ordered this mount and the MFJ-347 Dipole mount, pairs of 6m and 10m Hamsticks and now I'm going to order the 20m ones... I see you did 4 16' radials and you mentioned they are not enough. How many of what length do you think would be sufficient? Also, are the radials just laid on the ground's surface or are the ends staked with rods or something??? Lastly, which do you think would better, the Hamsticks in Horizontal Dipole or verticle??? Thanks again for the video, I plan to watch more and see what other cool tricks I learn.
I have always heard from several of my elmers through the years that the more ground radials the better. In my experience 4 has always worked fine for me. Length needs to be around 1/4 wavelength but that too can be up for discussion. Just experiment and see what works for you. I do have the radials staked just to keep them from coiling up. I'm sure the Hamsticks will work fine horizontally in a dipole configuration but I have just always used them as verticals either mobile or as a groundplane.
What antenna tuner are you using?
I have an MFJ-989C in my shack but only use it when I'm using my 80m inverted vee. I was not using a tuner at all in this video as this antenna was connected directly to my HTX-10 in my mobile.
Copy. That MJF Analyzer looks like a handy device.
It would be great to see CB make a comeback. It might be a way to get more people into HAM radio. KE4VBB
CB is doing pretty good in my area. This current solar cycle has the dx pretty high during the day. Several of us locals talk at night after it dies down. 73's
