Hi Estela! I am have my BS in nursing. I am 40yrs, currently working on paperwork to get to MEPS. My recruiter said I should go in as enlisted, because the officer route my take long time, up to 2 years. If I go in as enlisted, do I still have the option to work as a nurse?
@@kaywisdom8789 Hello, if you go in as enlisted you will not work as a nurse. Do not waste your time being enlisted because you are already a nurse!
@@itsestelarojas4713 Thank you Estela, I really appreciate your response.
Mam may i know height and weight for women in SSC(NAOO) 2024?
@@BhavaniNelli-c2c hello, I have no idea what SSC (NAOO) is. But the Navy has standard height and weight requirements you can look up on www.navy.com
I am a RN, interested in joining the reserve. What is the differences, pros and cons between branches as a nurse
@@kaywisdom8789 Hello! Please watch my video “Active Duty or Reserves” for that information. As far as different branches, I can only really speak on the Navy. I’m not sure about the Army or Air Force.
Do you have a video of the training requirements for a Navy reserve nurse just thinking about joining? How long is the initial training and how long do you have to be away from home?
@@craigjacobson158 Other than ODS which is 5 weeks, I don’t know of any other training.
I was a Corpsman at Asan Annex on Guam from 1968 to 1970. We had great Navy Nurses.
Thank you for sharing! I’m currently active duty enlisted and I would like to apply for the MECP program, could you please share ant advice, help, mentorship? Thank you so much! God bless you and your family.
Hello! For MECP, make sure you start putting your package together early. Talk to your career counselor at your command to get a checklist of all the required items, there are college classes you will need to have done, make sure you are getting competitive evals and filling leadership positions. You will also need strong letters of recommendations.
@@itsestelarojas4713 thank you so much!
Does the bonuses have taxes taken out?
Yes
Trying to apply to the upcoming fiscal year ? Any advice ? And how is the acceptance rate ??
I’m not sure what the acceptance rate is. It changes often. Advice: highlight any leadership experience you have had to show officer potential. If you have had any nursing experience, make sure your resume speaks to that so you can keep your specialty while in the Navy. Make sure you are healthy and can pass a Navy physical fitness test (see requirements online).

This is a crazy question, i wonder if the swim test can be re-scheduled if you're on your monthly period.
Unfortunately the swim test will not be rescheduled for that.
@@itsestelarojas4713 oh dear, I'll cross my fingers that I don't have it during the swim test.
Can you elaborate on the sea duty billets?
Sea duty billets are competitive. Every year, there are announcements made from the Nurse Corps about which sea duty (operational) billets are available. You have to put together a package consisting of your CV resume, last 3 Fitreps (evaluations), a letter of intent, and documents from your officer record. You will get interviewed by the operational specialty leader and then they will make their selection on who gets the sea duty billet. Sea duty is 2 years and as the nurse, you are usually in charge of medical training for your ship, and you help take care of any patients on the ship.
By the way, I would like to make a few Navy videos about my experience in the reserves. Did you have to check with PAO before posting or have they provided any guidance for Sailors wishing to post their experience and opinions on social media?
I haven’t spoken with any PAO.
Fantastic video.
I just discovered your videos! Thank you so much for the valuable information. Can you make a video talking about bases and positions you had as a navy nurse? ❤
Hi! Before I make this decision before going this route, is there any way I can ask you a couple of questions? I would love to ask someone who has this experience to get a better understanding of this.
Sure! What are your questions?
Good seeing you back after many months 🎉 try to make a video on retirement or pension plans in the military
Been watching your videos for a while and I'm finally leaving for ODS and will be at Pendleton. Thanks for the great info !
Hello, thank you so much for detailed video. I would like to know how difficult it is to be Navy Nurse as a mother. Do you have family yourself? What are minimum to serve?
Yes, I have 2 kids and am married. You can absolutely have a family in the Navy, but I am not going to lie, it can be difficult with moving around a lot and when you go to training or deployments. You can check out my video "Having a Family in the Navy," where I talk about this.
Hi! What is the difference between the NCP and the NROTC scholarship? I’m planning on starting nursing school in the fall, but I’m confused on which program would make more sense for me, thank you for your help!!
Hi! NCP gives you a small stipend to help cover books/tuition when you’re in your nursing program, and you get paid E-5 with dependent BAH pay. You have to have already been accepted into a nursing program. NROTC is a program you do while in college where you drill and have extra military training while in college. With NCP, you just go to nursing school and once you graduate, you will go to Officer Development School in Newport, RI to learn how to be a Naval officer. NCP doesn’t pay for your entire college tuition. NROTC pays for your full college tuition. You will owe 4-5 years of military service for both programs.
@@itsestelarojas4713 thank you so much!!!
I have one more question!! Is NCP only for nursing students that have already received their ASN and are pursuing their bachelors? Or could I do the NCP if I am currently pursuing my ASN? Thank you again!!
@@myaervin2037 it’s only for a Bachelor’s program in Nursing.
great video! I am very much considering it!
How many times have you been deployed as a nurse in the navy?
As a nurse, once. But, there are a lot of temporary additional duties (TADs) I have been on, too numerous to count that I have needed to travel to different states and countries.
Thank you so much for these super informative videos!
I’m currently a senior nursing with graduation 49 days away and I’m now considering becoming a navy nurse, but a little unsure. I’m also a single mother and unsure as to how that will work. Any advice?
Are you able to drill more than once a month if you wanted to? As a reserve ?
I’m not sure if there are cases where you can drill more than once a month. I think it would depend on what unit you are with.
@@itsestelarojas4713 oh okayyy , Tysm 🫶🏼 also if you don’t mind me asking , how long is school for a navy nurse if ur going in with some college credit (nothing to do with nursing) . Would u be away from family the entire schooling time also? That’s what I’m most concerned about. ☹️☹️
@@jameleevega0117 You will go to a regular accredited university for your nursing program. The Navy does not have its own undergraduate university to get your BSN. So, it depends on what university you go to for the length of your nursing program. So, you would be with your family during nursing school.
@@itsestelarojas4713 got it ! Thank you so muchhh!!!
You can use your AT days but no you have a set amount per fiscal year
Can you pick up a civilian job as a part time?
Yes. Some commands will let you moonlight.
@itsestelarojas4713 thank you for replying. You Have been a great resource for information about navy nursing. Joining the navy nurse Corp is a goal for next year for me
Your videos are awesome. Thank you.
I sure hope the Navy recognizes what you do to help the recruitment process. Awesome information.
I served enlisted from 81-85. Back then getting pregnant almost always led to being separated from the Navy. Times have surely changed in a good way.
Awesome video. I am hoping your O-4 is pinned.on now. You surely deserve it. TOTAL PROFESSIONAL!!!!!
Your videos are excellent Ma'am. Super professional. Hope O-4 is pinned on you now. You represent well.
I went through enlisted boot camp in Orlando in February 81. Had a blast. :)
I am old school Navy, 81-85. Sad to see the old dungarees and khakis go away. It was a long tradition. The new uniform you are wearing looks like a Marine to me.
I'm a Marine 85-2006 this has been happening more and More where Navy has been duplicating Marine uniforms with the rough desert style boot's the special 8 point cover, and now also the digital utility uniforms I would imagine that the Navy would want to be distinct and different as sailors from all other branches just like Marines are unique and different etc..
You are inspirational going from enlisted to Officer. I was enlisted on the Airdale side from 81-85, AT2. In my opinion Officers that came through the enlisted ranks were highly respected by us enlisted sailors. Kudos to you. Go Navy.
You are a total inspiration. I was.Navy enlisted on the Aviation side. 81-82. AT2. Wanted to be an Officer really bad. Got out and finished my degree BS in Aeronautical Engineering and decided to stay civilian. Just retired from Delta with 32 years. If I had to do it again I would have went back in with commission and went the pilot route. I am blessed.. Married my Navy sweetheart and we.just celebrated our 40th anniversary. 3 children and 7 grandchildren. :). Go Navy.
Sounds like you had an amazing career! Congratulations on your 40th anniversary!
Thank you so much, this is exactly what I was looking for.
Thank you so much for your videos! I've been considering my options and these help clarify a lot of information
Which one is the OR uniform.
You wear scrubs in the OR.
Does this ranking layout also apply to reserves? so if I sign 5 years, will I go in as an O-1 and then on become an O2 at my 2nd yr in the reserve? (I'm BSN with 4yrs experience, all 4 yrs I have worked 2 jobs ICU and case management. Plan to quit one and try reserve).
The ranking system is the same. I’m not sure about time in rate for the reserves though.
How long do you stay at your first duty station ?
Normally it’s 2-3 years at each duty station.
hi! Would you mind sharing how long were you deployed? How was it? Thanks!
My deployments ranged from 6-9 months. I deployed to combat zones where we had to carry live weapons and go into bunkers when our base got mortared. Then I’ve been on a training deployment where we did field exercises to “practice” how we would set up our field hospital in different areas in the Indopacom region. Every deployment is different based on where you are and the mission.
Hello Estela! Can I join Navy nurse corps if I have two citizenships. Or do I have to renounce the non-American citizenship?
I’m pretty sure as long as you have an American citizenship you are good. The best person to talk to about these types of administrative issues is a Navy detailer.
Where can I find the standard PRT requirement for ODS? (I can barely do any push ups)
You can go to www.mynavyhr.navy.mil to look up the PRT standards. You can honestly just google it too.
Hello, I have a question. I’ve been a nurse here in Az for abut 5 yrs with my nclex-RN license and currently still practicing as a civilian nurse. I have my BSN degree from the Philippines graduate of 2015 and I pursued my MSN-L in 2019, it’s weird because they still ranked me as an O-1 for the US Navy but when I applied for my package in the US Airforce they ranked me as an O-2. What are your thoughts about this? It’s like they dismissed my work experience as a nurse here in the Us and just accredited my MSN years.
That’s interesting. I’m not sure why the Navy did not acknowledge your prior nurse experience. Sorry, I don’t have a good answer for you.
OR Nursing is considered critical care?
Yes
Hi im newly graduated nurse . And i am talking to a medical recruiter. I think I am going for it. What questions do you recommend me asking the recruiter? What should I watch for to make sure I am utilizing all the benefits and services that should be provided for me. Also, do you know the difference between navy vs Air Force as far being a nurse
Hello! You can ask the recruiter if there are any sign on bonuses for nurses. Since you are a new graduate and don’t have experience, you may not get one but it wouldn’t hurt to ask. If you would like the Navy to pay for your graduate school, ask about DUINS at your first duty station. There are incentive bonuses for critical care nurses for 2, 4, and 6 year contracts. But be careful because if you for example want to go to CRNA school in the DUINS program, you cannot apply until your incentive bonus is fulfilled. Airforce and Navy nursing is just different settings. If you want to be a flight nurse, join the Air Force. They fly waaaaaay more than the Navy’s flight nurses. Others than that, I don’t know specific differences.
@@itsestelarojas4713 thank you so much for the reply. They told the offer bonuses for 3 years 20k and 4 years 30k. I would love my first year to be in the US, San Diego. And then possibly deploy to Spain or Japan. Im considering 3 years contract. Do you think its doable to start one year in the US and deploy with 3 years contract? Again thank you very much for your valuable time .
@@mohammedaldrees2387Yes, I think it is possible to deploy within a 3 year contract.
Ur gorgeous 🥰🥰
I have my BSN and worked for about 4 months in the ED as a new grad just transferred to Oncology cuz it was closer to home and better pay and hospital in my opinion. Can I direct commission I am old as well 34
Best thing to do is talk to a recruiter. They have all the up to date information on need for nurses and waivers for age (if needed).
