Loved the "hole in the bucket" reference
What´s the aluminium pipe´s (the legs) diameter?
Those are a pain to work with!
How so?
The squares on the A screen are the kV, not the zones (8.8 kV = 9 squares).
Can u send me ur Facebook
Made my hand
The insulators are not made by hand, but are great, and last a very long time
i like this how to purchase the electric fence
store.am.gallagher.com/am/us/en_US/search
I've attached the direct link to Gallagher where the product is for sake. Enjoy
Thanks and there is a tiny release button in the face of the shiny metal that releases a prong to connect to the fence.
Great point!
I wish the clips weren’t quite so expensive after investing big bucks in the tumble wheels. $20 for 5 plastic clips feels overpriced to me
What part of PNW are you in? I am in Winlock and need some help, instruction and advice.
We are based out of South Olympia area.
@@trackingyranch6821 I am trying to place an order with Gallagher right now and am unsure what I am doing... can I contact you?
@@trackingyranch6821 If I purchase The Smart Fence 2, will I need anything with it besides the energizer?
Great demonstration video! Do you think this fence will deter bears?
Will work as a deterrent with a powerful enough charger. It's mainly "power" that is the deterrent for wildlife.
So the grass under the fence doesn't have to be mowed?
No it doesn't, with a properly sized Energizer. "Grass load," or the grass that touches a fence should never be too much for a properly sized Energizer. (Note we live in Western Washington with almost 100 inches rain a year, so we understand "grass load")

Nice video! Will these work with non-Gallagher chargers? We are thinking of getting one but we have some home-built solar chargers in addition to Gallaghers.
Yes, they will work with other chargers as well. Super time saver for whatever unit your using.
Probably the best video explaining, good quality information with no time wasted. Great work 👍 from New Zealand
Thank you!!!
How does it hold up in high winds?
We've had it up for temporary horse pens in 40mph winds in Eastern Washington with no issues.
I use the standard temp fence posts from the local farm stores. Don’t know brand but every store sells them. Not the Gallagher brand. What I’d like to know, is how long are THESE steel ground spikes? And, do you think the black material resists UV degradation BETTER than the white Or yellow? I know many agree that the YELLOW AND WHITE clip on or mail in insulators for steel or wood posts, are said to become more brittle and break SOONER than the Black ones do! I agree! Please comment! Thanks 🙏
The main post (where the reel assembly is) has a 7" spike. The line posts are 4" long each. This length works well in most settings and with the use of the adjustable guy strings it really helps to ensure the posts stay put when making sharp angle changes.
That turbo braid looks like some good stuff. We started with the 6mm poly rope but couldn't fit enough on a standard reel for some of our bigger paddocks. We went to 4.5mm poly rope which worked okay but it still hard to reel through grass especially with the geared reels. How does the turbo braid reel through tall grass? It looks like it would be smaller and smoother which should make it reel easier.
We pull it through 6' tall canary grass in late summer with no problem.
Thanks 😊
Excellent video, thanks from Australia
Thank you for the feedback!
Please make your Step-in-post review video so it can be saved.
Should be able to now
Carefull using geared reels with tumblewheels, if you pull the Tumblewheels with them you can strip the gears in your reel.
We run 4 sets of tumblewheels, on about 150 acres of prescribed grazed pastures with mostly feeder cattle and long heifers, on moderately varied terrain. Oldest set of wheels is about 3 years old. My wife, 13yr old daughters or myself each do the moves, depending on the day. Never have I had a failure on any of our reels with some reels almost 5 years old, and some classic reels well over 10yrs old. Feel free to check out our other videos on KZread of this in action.
Take the label off. There is a Mechanism that you can't see with the label on to secure the wire.
The label can stay right on as shown in the video, and is how the instructions describe. We tie it just as directions say the video captures. Check out time 12.42.
Thanks for info
Thanks for taking the time to do this demo. I've been considering this unit to move my goats around their copice/polard forest pasture. It is disappointing that its not designed for adding additional reels and post when you get to end of it, but other than thr drawback of having to purchase more units to increase the paddock size, I think I'm sold.
Thank you for your feedback. We just use additional units, each connected with alligator clamp jumpers, to extend the size. These are definitely a great "tool" but do have their limits 😉
What are the stakes like in frozen ground. Do the spikes bend or break easily?
Super hard or rocky ground they will bend if not careful. For hard ground we make a pilot hole by hammering about 10" of a piece of rebar then pulling out. When they bend we just slip a small pipe over the spike and straighten them out slowly
@@trackingyranch6821 good tips
I wondered about that set up. Thanks for making the video!
You're welcome!
Nice dude! That is going to be one of your best paddocks next year! After you see the results of this animal impact and what it can do you want to do this to your farm on every square inch.
It will be neat to see the difference. I assume the same, that it will come back amazing.
A hollow corer from agri fab would be a sound investment. Helps aerate and decompact the soil as well as encourage microbial bacteria .
We'd love to try one! We do use a spike aerator on our winter ground with great success so I assume a hollow corer would work great
After you go over it with the flail mower, do the cattle eat the young blackberry popups that come along via birds?
We don't get blackberries in this field. Years of grazing ensure that. Other fields we do have some wild blackberries and enjoy watching each year as blackberries get eaten more and more. They love the young growth.
Isn't there a setting on this model that shows amps and voltage at the same time?
The new Gallagher Fault Finder's show both on the same display. This model, the previously released model only allows you to see one reading at a time, but with a push of a button you can toggle between the two.
Great demo video!

It works pretty well, but pretty soon you realize that its easy to train your sheep to a single poly wire 30 cm off the ground which is much cheaper, more flexibile with length options and much easier to move.
That's the joy of having many "tools" in your "toolbox." The Gallagher SmartFence system is just one of those "tools" that does a great job when needed. We find that the multi-wires of this system help with high pressure moves, like turning corners and controlling movements at gate openings. It's all about training our animals. Keep up the great work!
You must have way more docile sheep than we do in New Zealand where these where invented. My sheep just jump over a single wire that height or go underneath it, even if "Live". I just altered my three reel unit to run to eight wires at a cost of three dollars. Works a treat even for new lambs.
@@peterdykzeul3074 do u think this would work for goats?
@@israelrika1931 Hi. I may be the wrong person to ask as I do not have one of these units and nor do I have goats. I graze my sheep and lambs with a seven wire electric fence using tape, not poly wire. I made it from a standard triple reel system and for five dollars New Zealand and ten minutes of work it now runs out as anything I chose between three and eight wires, my choice. Works like a charm. It is no more expensive but admittedly a bit more work as I space the pegs only two metres apart to keep them in. Do not buy one of those electric netting units. A pain in the arse to put up and the lambs get their heads stuck in the mesh so you cannot electrify it as it will kill them and the ewes graze and chew out the bottom wires. Gallager is a very innovative New Zealand company with its headquarters not fa from where I live.
@@israelrika1931 folks use them with goats and sheep. A high power charger really helps.
What frustrates me about those porcelain blocks is that just a little snow or ice, or a good rain, and the system is shorted out.
We get almost 100" of rain, about 6-12" of snow a year, in our area, Pacific Northwest. We have never had a fence short out from rain or snow.

This really helped tonight, everyone never wants to ask the silly question "how does this thing work" Your explanation and the proper way to us this really saved me hours of time chasing a broken wire. Thanks
Happy to help out! Great Gallagher products make life a lot easier. @gallagheranimalmanagement
My smart fence unit got horribly tangled when my sheep plowed through it and dragged it. (New charger now.) Weeks of untangling, very uneven strand lengths. I'll work on it when I get closer to spring.
Great comment, as I've had to deal with them being Tangled up as well, following a horse running through it. I find that the easiest way to fix the problem is to disconnect, unscrew, the metal connector that is at the far end, away from the reel, at the first post you set out. This allows you to treat each wire as it's own. Once you're able to coil up all the wires you can rethread them through the post and reconnect the metal clamp. I'll plan to do a video in the future showing this process.
@@trackingyranch6821 thanks, I'll be looking for it sometime soon
What do you use for ground rod?
For our grazing properties, such as this one, with permanent exterior fences; we use a minimum 3 galvanized ground rod (10') apart system. If we're making temporary pens (such as at a horseback riding competition) we use a battery powered charger as a 3' long pointed galvanized T handle ground rod. They are manageable to push in, pull out easy, and work fine for us on smaller systems
I really like this! The way I'm setting up my lanes now seems to take forever. Where can I get it?
