I recently saw that my area has a lot of VW beetles up on Craigslist for like $800, and Manx still makes like five new models. Man I really wanna do this. Maybe with a Subaru wrx engine or even a type 4 stroked and bored to 2.3L. But it would take a few years before I get that far.

Why did you need more torque? From what I read, anything over 300 should be okay to not lose steps.
