My mentor, Lord rest his soul, was so condemning of the Baldwin brand because of certain consul piano models kept at my alma mater (SUNY Orange) that he considered below par. I think he was pretty blown away when we visited this piano retailer in the city of Newburgh, NY (Spordone Piano) and Heard the proprietor talking about Bob and Pianos being up to the same aesthetic standard as Steinway, Yamaha, Kawaii and other builders. If he was still with us and we had watched you do this demonstration in person, I can imagine it would’ve been further blown away.

Note that all the treble wire has individual hitch pins for every single speaking length. Nothing loops around and back again to another tuning pin, as is the style today. Unless you want to spring for a Bosendorfer Imperial, you just don't see that level of craftsmanship in a piano nowadays.

Bartolomeo Cristofori, born in Padua, Italy, in 1655, is credited with inventing the piano. His instruments marked the transition from the harpsichord to the modern piano, influencing music and instrument design profoundly. Below is a comprehensive history of Cristofori and his pianos: Early Life and Career - **1655**: Bartolomeo Cristofori is born in Padua, Italy. - 1688: Cristofori is hired by Ferdinando de' Medici, the Prince of Tuscany, to work in Florence. This move is crucial as it places Cristofori in an environment conducive to innovation. Invention of the Piano - 1700: The earliest known reference to a piano ("gravicembalo col piano e forte," meaning harpsichord with soft and loud) dates from this year. This instrument allowed for dynamic contrast through the touch of the keys, unlike the harpsichord. - 1709: The oldest surviving Cristofori piano is dated to this year. His early pianos featured several key innovations: - Hammer Action: Cristofori devised a hammer action mechanism that struck the strings, producing a softer or louder sound depending on the pressure applied. - Escapement: This allowed the hammer to fall away from the string after striking it, preventing dampening and allowing the string to vibrate freely. - Check Mechanism: Prevented the hammer from bouncing back and striking the string again. Later Developments and Recognition - 1711: Scipione Maffei, an Italian writer, publishes an article in the "Giornale dei Letterati d'Italia" describing Cristofori's new instrument. This article is crucial in spreading knowledge about the piano. - 1720: By this year, Cristofori had refined his piano designs further, creating instruments with greater range and improved sound quality. - 1726: Cristofori's workshop is now producing pianos with four octaves range, setting the stage for future developments. - 1731: Bartolomeo Cristofori dies in Florence. Legacy and Impact - Late 18th Century: Cristofori's piano design significantly influences other instrument makers, leading to the development of various regional styles of piano construction. - 19th Century: The piano becomes the most popular domestic instrument in Europe and the Americas, thanks in part to Cristofori's pioneering work. - Modern Day: Only three Cristofori pianos are known to survive today. These instruments are held in collections in Leipzig, Rome, and New York, where they are valued both as historical artifacts and as milestones in the evolution of musical instruments. Cristofori's innovations laid the foundation for the modern piano, an instrument central to Western music for centuries. His work demonstrates how craftsmanship and ingenuity can lead to lasting cultural and technological advancements.
