Hello Stefan. I contacted you earlier with a similar question, but I'm still in doubt. I'm currently windfoiling on my freestyle board, which has been adapted to fit an NP Glide wind foil. I can do jibe, duck jibe and sometimes 360, so I wouldn't say I'm a beginner anymore. I saw on Your channel that you also foiled on ordinary boards. My question is, is it worth buying a dedicated foil board? Is the foiling experience much better? I didn't have the chance to try such a board and you are the only person I know who has foiled both on regular freestyle boards and real foil board. I am thinking of buying JP Free Foil 115 which is very similar to your Wizard. Thank you!
@Stefan-Foil8 ай бұрын
A windfoil board makes a big difference. Although a freestyle board is the best option if you wan´t a hybrid. Upwind angles are crazy with the wide tail and feels more comfortable going fast. But for jumping tricks and 360 a freestyle board is OK but it's less comfortable to ride and less pitch control but depends on the length and weight of the board. The shorter and lighter the better it is.

Its normally a popular spot. Anyway, there is a windmeter at the spot and it was super light winds so good luck with using a fin. Even if you could plane in a 12 knot gust it would only last a few seconds and you would slog for 10 min waiting for another gust. @@Stefan-Foil I'm a bit curious about this as well. I windfoil and windsurf on a hybrid RRD LTD 155 2023 board and Slingshot Hover Glide FWind V4 2023 foil (has 1534 cm^2 front wing, low aspect)... it seems great, but if I get more into foiling, specifically looking at top speed, is a windfoil specific shorter board better for that also? Especially in light or extremely light winds, 5-10 knots, which is where I see myself foiling the most. Or, to put it a different way, is a "better" way to increase speed to find a higher aspect front wing and possibly other parts on the foil? OR: change to a foil-specific sail? I use freeride or wave sails from Ezzy currently. Also, nice maneuvering in the video, I was not sure about bigger sails as much due to their higher weight, and you seemed to not need the power so much. I may still stick with going big on low wind speeds just to max out on speed / upwind ability and sacrifice maneuverability myself, but interesting to see it's possible. I like 8.5 m^2 in those conditions, me weighing in at 64 kg.
@fabioprb35382 жыл бұрын
This is all very interesting mate: smaller sail, smaller front wing, 6 mt/second wind speed....I'd rather talk "knots" normally and would like to know how you did measure that....by anemo-meter or just "nosemeter"? Anyway this seems to be a "miracle" and wuite easy, doesn't it? The real question is what is your weigjt and how long you have been practicing windsurf foiling? Without these two answers, small sails small wing....small wind means nothing to me.
@Stefan-Foil Жыл бұрын
Look in the description, I just added my weight, 85kg at the time, (clipp is from last year) There are ways to estimate windspeed by looking at the water state and there is also a windmeter at the spot. I use a big foil but sail is not ideal, I now have a better sail, Severne foil freek, I need even less wind now. Biggest size i need is 5,2. 👌

Hi Stefan, i am working on the same issue too. At the moment I have reached 28,5kn Toppspeed with the 800 Frontwing from Starboard on the 115 Plus Fuselage with the -1.5 Degree Shim on the 255-2 backwing. My Sail was a 7.0qm Severe M3. My Board is the same as yours. Last times I switched to the smaller Frontwing 650. I pushed really hard, but I didn't reach higher speeds. I think I have to switch to a smaller Fuselage (95, 105) and less Backwing angle (-2)and maybe a smaller backwing. At the Moment I hook out in the strongest gusts because I have not 100% control in the gusts. I think I have to stay hooked in and really sit down in the harness to get more speed. But in gusty conditions this is really hard on the edge. I think that more downhaul like in Slalomsurfing works great for more speed, like in Windsurfing too. Sailtrim and Mastfoot position is very important for me. I always place the Mastfoot way to far in the front for the first speed rides and reduce it step by step till I find a sweet spot. Then I try to ride foil nearly in a slalom position, but more sitting to press the foil down. For me this works and I hope I reach the 30knots soon. But you will need 20+ knots for this.
@Stefan-Foil2 жыл бұрын
28,5 knots top speed is very good with the 800 ving. To go faster I think you need to use much smaller wing and backwing and shorter fuse. I think its easier to push your speed when you are a little underpowered on the foil but with bigger sail to compensate. Then you get more control but not as good upwind/downwind.
@crown25482 жыл бұрын
Can you please comment on the length of the fuse. The longest I have is a 70cm. I am an advanced windsurfer, and have been foiling with kite and wings for a couple of years. Do I need a longer fuse (more than 70 cm) if the purpose of my windfoiling will be upstanding cruising manouvers and downwinds??? I am not interested in speeding upwind or racing!

It's very similar to a normal freek. Just a bit lighter with only 4 battens and some other foil specific features, like its more pull and backhand neutral. Compared to my blade wave sails it feels softer and has more power but turns flat when you depower. I think upwind the blade is better and when you sail more powered with smaller foils (race wing). But I really love this sail and can recomend it, I only have a 5,2 but use it like 90% of my sessions. It's very closed in the top but you can still sail in gusty conditions with a big windrange without getting easily overpowered, just pick a size smaller.

Looking forward to any test of this kind of board with fin on heavy chop. I foil most of the time with small inboard straps dedicated foil board, up to 30kts... but I'd like to give high wind fin sailing a try. Flat water or foiling should be possible with the same board, but I really wonder if you can handle heavy chop with wider tail. Regarding sail for foiling, my favorite sails are very low aspect naish Chooper (about 10 years old now). I am looking for very neutral sail response to gust. I've heard that freestyle sails (Goya Bounce or the new cypher) can do good at this, but I never had the opportunity to try out... My RRD vogue give me too much down pressure in gust for confortable high wind foiling.
@Stefan-Foil2 жыл бұрын
Hello Guido! That is a really good point. I might pick up on that idea, thank you. I have tried this board in high wind and chop. Its hard but its possible. Although not really recomended, I think next time Im not taking this board in those conditions. Great for jumping though. Check this one. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nJWimLijfNu2odo.html Sails for foiling should be high aspect, pregerable foil sail that suit the type of foiling you do. Up to 5,7 wave and freestyle sails are ok. I use blade 4,2-4,7, foilfreek 5,2 (instead of blade 5,3) for this board and the wizard 115. Bigger sizes I use foil freerace or race sails with camber. Phantom X. I tried 6 batten no-cam freeride hybrid sails like Duotone E-pace also, 5,7 is ok, but 6,6 is not stable enough. Boards: I only use foil specific boards now. I use mainly the wizard 115 in all conditions or the jp150 with racing gear. I will probably replace it with a big waveboard in the 90-95 liter range for high wind/chop and waves like the SB ultrakode or similar thruser board. And I already have an old RRD twinwave 82 (onshore/chop) and a old Quattro LS pro quad 84 liter (sideshore).
@guidolaroque92802 жыл бұрын
From my experience, high aspect isn't always 'the' solution for foiling. I agree that theorically it gives you better 'glide' ability to sail trough a lull, but over 20kt, most of the time the issue for foiling is more managing the gust than managing the lull. The spot I sail is very gusty when above 20kt, and massively choppy. I can't manage to control slalom boards with the chop, so waveboard is the only possibility for fin windsurfing, but then I hardly manage to maintain planing in the lull. So foiling is way easier. Only you have to control height above water, and with any sail I tried except my very low aspect Chopper, every gust pushes my board down, and if I have time to react, it usually ends up overfoiling. So I tuned to minimize sail effect, and now it almost feels like wing : no downpressure from the sail. I set my mast base all the way back (that is about 10cm ahead of my front strap with my homemade board) higher wishbone, and I do pull on the downhall. So basically, I am doing every thing reverse to what most foiler say is the foil rule. But I have quite a good success when I compare to other foil buddies. On low wind day, I use more usual camed sail, but then gust not such a big deal.

Edit: after looking at this video again I do say its 3-5m/s wind and a few gusts at maximum 6m/s (=12 knots).
@@Stefan-Foil i also can go with fórmula board and 11m sail ;) what setup up whould you suggest to go with 10knots? Is better with a large foil board like iqfoil or a board like you have? Qnd and the sail? Thanks!
@@abiliodinis746 I also used to ride foil race gear, 91-100cm wide and 9,0m sail but personally dont like it. This spot have to carry gear long to the beach, formula gear or race foil gear are big/heavy. Although probably get up earlier in lighter wind and alot faster. For me, I mostly wingfoil last few month 😛
@@Stefan-Foil but have you ever tired both setups at same time ? Like have the foil race with 9.0 and the freeride slingshot board and a 5 ou 6 M sail to compare each one has the earliest get up? Whould be Nice ;)
@@Stefan-Foil I see this now, there's some tradeoff between race/fast style and cruising/freestyle motivated windfoiling...feel free to disregard my other comment if you see, I think I have my answer!
Nice video. This is about where I am in my windsurf foil journey. It gives me encouragement lol
Looking Good Stefan! Thanks for sharing!
Yeah Bud! NIce duck gybes!
Respect, looks fun and beautiful! :)
Hey Stefan, Which foils have you used in the Wizard?
@danieltrenfield. Only use SAB 799 and 899
As you say at the end, you must open the sail gradualy as you turn in the gybe to the point that it is clew first when releasing/ flipping the sail. Took me a while to figure out ;-)
Stefan, how does this board compare with others that you may have ridden in the past (in fin mode)? I also see from their website that it is somewhat heavier than other fsw boards of similar volume. To you does the board feel (or felt) heavy? Many thanks.
Mert Ozener Its great in fin mode, very light not heavy and short so mych better control in gybes. Its fast and turns well but not lose as a waveboard. Its a fast rocker, well its a freestyle board. Used by one of rhe best freestyler in the world. The weight of the MB boards is more honest than other manufacturer soec, like Slungshot can be up to 10% heavier than spec. This board is my lightest foilboard.
@@Stefan-Foil thank you. I have had my eye on this board for some time, not only for its compact and innovative shape but also because I know the brand makes sturdy boards, which I think is imperative when one gets a high-wind board (given the punishment it may have to take at unstable water states). Thank you once again.
@@Beachbumextraordinaire But to be honest I would not buy this board today since I use dedicated foilboards that are much better with foils (Slingshot boatds). Its still a great board, good shape and high quality. Just that I dont do much fin freestyle. So I would now chose a wave board for waves or a slalomboard for flatwater.
I too am not head over heels for the fin-foil concept. That said, the wildcat seems to be the only FSW board out there that is able to freestyle. All of the other mainstream ones I have tested tend to be better for high-wind blasting and wave sailing. This is the reason why I favor The Wildcat.
Front wind is too big !
Yes, i know but should bevable to go faster anyway
Hi Stefan, What Fin setup are you using on your MB92 in this session? What area of Sweden(?)? are you foiling? Aloha, José PS very nice videos BTW
Thanks😁 I use a foil not fins. At the time I use a NP glide medium slim/hp13 with 70cm mast. I moved on since then and switched to SAB foil but not with this board though it has a tuttlebox. I no longer foil with this board. With 92 liter its not goid for light wind fir my 87kg and I swutched ovwr ti slingshot wizard 114 v2.
Hi Stefan, which fins did you use. 26 / 2x12.5? MB recommend 6cm side fins and 26. I got the 108l
@Michael Weidner I could not find 6cm side fins so i think I got bigger ones or just use it with a singel fin. I only use foil now and different board (slingshot) since over one year so dont know. In this video I use bigger fins than normally since its onshore so hatd to get out. Also have a 19cm fin.
@@Stefan-Foil ok thanks for the info. I also got the wizard 114 but i'm lazy in carrying around 2 different boards so wildcat is a good compromise
Hello, what size harness lines do you use/recommend?
Cant remember but I normaly use 22-24"
Look like great fun! Can I ask for how long have you been windfoiling and what's the usual windrange for your kit? Thanks!
3-4 years. Any wind from 12 knots to 30 knots with 5,2 to 3,6 freek/foilfreek. Same board wizard 114 and foil w799 in every wind
@@Stefan-Foilaloha and your weight how many kilos do you have my friend?
Nice video I’m thinking about buying the W799 and I’d like to know the wind range of it, specially how capable it’s on light wind.
@Eduardo I use it in all winds from light to strong with maximum 5,2 foikfreek.
@@Stefan-Foil finally I got it and I use it like you in all winds conditions
Hi Stefan, nice Foil Clips. As I see you have experience with different Foil Setups, I like to ask for advice. I am 83kg, use mostly 4.7 and 5.3 Wavesails with 82L and 106 Thruster Waveboards. I have a Isonic 133L and a Fanatic H9 Foil with 65cm Frontwing, but don't like the bulkiness. I would like to buy a one Board solution. Maybe the MB- WildCat 98L. Also for traveling with one Board and two Sails. Would you recommend this? Or go with a dedicated Foilboard, as is see you often use that Wizard 114. Really appreciate your ideas. Greetings Franz
Hello Franz, Unfortunately there is no one board solution. The wildcat is close but not as good as the wizard board for foiling. Its also no waveboard, it a freestyle board with foil option.
What was the wind speed? And what about the rider's weight ?
Sorry dont remember, 2 years old video.
HI. I think you had in the past a goya regular windsurf board for windfoiling and now you have an specific shorter foil board. I'm about to take that step. I'm sure manoeuvrability will be much better but the take off in light winds is better for the bigger tail or worse for the shorter length? Let's suppose same volume and sail size.Thanks
The short foil soecific board is a gamechanger. Better in every way 👍
@@Stefan-Foil I'm a bit curious about this as well.
Yes you need a longer fuse, the balance is difference in windfoiling so the wing need to be about 10cm extra forward of the mast compared to other foil sports.
Nice what foil are you using?
Sab w799
Awesome videos. I’m looking for a small high wind (20kts+) Severne sail for use with Starboard X145 and Severne redwing foil on a large lake with good size wind swell. Would you go Blade, S1 or Freek and what size?
I use a freek 3,6 in those winds. For race foil a bigger severne blade or S1 could work but for bigger surf wings the freestyle sails are better
Gear? Slingshot?
yes, wizard 114. Severne blade sail, np glide medium slim
Nice looking sail what size?
Yes its perfekt, love it. Its a severne foil freek 5,2
Nice looking sail what size?
Duck jibes, jumps and a crash: Excellent footage.
That take passion and commitment! Great Riding!
Flottes Teil, ich habe mir das gleiche Board gekauft und bin gespannt.
Great board although over 10 years old. Still my go to wave board.
Yesterday I was thinking that It was too cold for foiling in Alicante Spain in January🤣🤣🤣.Big respect
Never too cold to foil, just need a good wetsuit
Its a SABFOIL 799 freestyle foil
Best freeride windfoil wing ever
What you got underneath that thing? Axis?
SAB 799 always, got lots of vertical pop
Hy. I am impressed, and I promise I'll never complain again about cold in southern France. I see you sail a foil freek. Is it much better than a regular freestyle sail ? Is it so much gust neutral compared to a wave sail ?
It's very similar to a normal freek. Just a bit lighter with only 4 battens and some other foil specific features, like its more pull and backhand neutral. Compared to my blade wave sails it feels softer and has more power but turns flat when you depower. I think upwind the blade is better and when you sail more powered with smaller foils (race wing). But I really love this sail and can recomend it, I only have a 5,2 but use it like 90% of my sessions. It's very closed in the top but you can still sail in gusty conditions with a big windrange without getting easily overpowered, just pick a size smaller.
@@Stefan-Foil Thanks Stephan.
Hey Stefan - great vid's. What kind of gloves do you use?
Yes good question, gloves are the biggest problem but I found these the only that work. Only 3mm and pre bent. Pro limit. They copy Da-kine gloves that they stoped producing. Most people in Sweden use these in Winter.
Super👍. What kind gofoil die you use?
It's a gopro 9, with wide view setting
🤣Sorry🤣What kind of foil die you use?
@@carstenrausch1888 haha,😂 ok...a SAB w799/399 Balz Müller freestyle foil with aprox 1100cm2.
What wing are you using now? Front-wing and stabilizer...
Hello Christian, I'm using a SAB w799 Balz pro (1100cm2) with 399 stab.
So beautiful…
Do you need to remove back strap to put foil on? Also if you switch from foil to fin do you need to move foot straps?
I never need to remove or move straps. Just the mast base I move it back for foiling.
@@Stefan-Foil so the center back strap doesn't block access to the Tuttle screws?
Yes, but its no problem to just push the strap to the side with your hand. No need to take it of
