Ultrakill definitely shows that you aren't the main character. as the one developing is Gabriel. He realizes, through you kicking his ass, twice, that everything he had faith in was a lie. god was gone. there was no hope. and although that the full game is not out, we can assume that gabriel's goals will change. V1 is merely a vessel for the player, slaughtering through hell. In fact, I think that V1 is the Antagonist, killing sinners for the sole goal of just keeping itself fueled.

I dunno how much this counts but Sunny from OMORI is barely as much of a main character as Kel is. Yes, in the Dreamworld parts, OMORI is very much the main character, but when you're playing the Real World sections if you're doing the Sunny Route, Kel's the main character, not Sunny. Kel's the one who does things that would be attributed to the main character, defending Basil from Aubrey and her gang, getting Basil's photo album back, getting Aubrey to realize how much of a dick she's been and getting the friend group back together, Sunny was there, but he only assisted Kel, he never started an action himself unless he was helping or told to like getting Basil out of the pond after Aubrey shoved him in. The only actions Sunny does that can be counted as Main Character Territory is in regard to his best friend Basil, such as checking on him to make sure he was alright after it was brought up that Sunny would be moving away and preventing him from killing himself, if you choose to, anyways. The game may be about Sunny and his trauma, but when it comes to the real world, Kel's the main character, not him. also Monika always has been the main character of DDLC!

I'll be honest, if there was a Hitman game where you are a detective trying to find and apprehend Agent 47, I would play the shit out of it, can you imagine trying to check the head of every bald person to see if he's Agent 47 while trying and usually failing to keep your target alive, and then, JUST at the very end, when you think you finally have Agent 47 cornered, the camera pans around, putting you in charge of Agent 47 and a scene similar to the Funeral scene from Hitman blood money would play out.

I keep seeing this video recommended to me, and I just want to say that the Point-of-view character IS the protagonist. It actually doesn't matter if that character is a villain or side character or lacks agency; they are STILL the protagonist. Stories (games) can always have MULTIPLE protagonists. Protagonist = Point-of-view character. Protagonist =/= "good guy" or "most important person" in a story. ["=/=" is a way to notate "does NOT equal"]

It's used quite effectively in the point-and-click adventure "The Longest Journey" as a plot twist in the end. Turns out you're not the new guardian that is needed to bring back balance to the worlds. But you helped out the guy that is and all works out in the end. Thanks! Now go home to your old boring life.

Final Fantasy X is also like that, Tidus play an important part and his goals do get more complex as the story progresses, but the game is really all about Yuna.

I kinda feel like rdr2 cp 1-3 fall into this category of games as well. Arthur is just a guy in the gang, following Dutch his orders. (Till cp 4-6 where Arthur rebels against the ideas of Dutch)

Helldivers 2 does this, you are just a random grunt sent to do the deeds of the higher ups, it’s more proven because every time you die the character gets a new voice (unless you select one) and you only can name your ship, not you. and the orders from high command don’t single a person out, because each helldiver is a different person in the story. It’s even cooler because the player base can actually make decisions to change the story. And supposedly they say every player’s death is actually canon in the lore (minus glitches) The real protagonist is probably high command because they give the orders that continue the storyline.

A game that I believe might fit the "vehicule character" category is SCHiM, a game where you control a frog that travels in shadows and is trying to get back to "his" shadow, the shadow of a young man. The story in my opinion isn't about the frog, it's about the man and what happens to him. He has the most character growth. (the game isn't fully out yet but i've been able to play the demo)

One of my favourite animes, Soul Eater, is told primarily from the POV of a duo, composed of Maka Albarn and Soul Eater. While reading the story and watching the anime, I've begun to realize that the protagonist might actually be a side character, Crona Gorgon. I realize that so much of the story really revolves around them and their choices, but not as much around Maka and Soul's. Just something I've thought about that is similar to the concept of this video.

I think most FromSoft titles subvert the idea of the player character being the most important. You regularly step into a massive world in which many big and important events have already taken place. You’re just one more lost soul who will most likely end as nothing more than a nameless faceless bloodstain on the floor. That’s why the first thing you do in most of those games is create a character. You can make your character be whatever you want because your character ultimately doesn’t matter.

I haven't played too many games, but one that could fall under this category is There is No Game: Wrong Dimension. You play as the user, which is even more of a blank slate than the can from Stray. It's the other character, literally named Game, who is with the user the entire time. He experiences character development and talks to the other characters, which you cannot do. While you technically make a lot of the decisions, most of the time there is no alternative; the game is guiding you to the real goal, or at least what he thinks is the real goal. Either that, or he's pushing you away.

I think deltarune kinda fits this, Kris is the character you play as, but the game makes it clear from the very beginning that there are no true choices. I mean, the character you actually play as would be the soul. But in the overall story, it seems like the story just follows Susie's development and Ralsei's guidance. Neither Kris or the soul do anything besides do puzzles and control battles, while the story is focused on Susie and Ralsei. Ralsei mostly serves to drive the story by presenting the conflict and how to stop it. The story wouldn't exist without ralsei, so I would probably say he's the protagonist. However in the snowgrave route, I would say Noelle is the protagonist, while you as the soul are the antagonist manipulating her from the vessel of her friend (Kris). I'm not really sure about this but it's just a thought :3

The dualism of protagonist and antagonist is just about points of view, but both are both A protagonist is the antagonist in the eyes of the opposing main caharacter, and by that the antagonist and the protagonist see themselves each as the protagonist; so in Wandersong, for example, The Bard is actually the protagonist as much as The Hero is, just from another perspective It's about how they are seen by others, since the concept of epathizing with them is a key point and so following the example from Wandersong, for The Witch The Bard is the protagonist, and for the overseers The Hero is the antagonist This isn't limited to the characters in the game tho, it also concerns the players, as for someone killing the overseers is better than helping them, so seeing The Hero as the protagonist

SoulMask is one as well. Your "Main character" Is actually not even important. just another Tribesman/Fallback since you can actually control the other tribesman and level them up too. The Main character (from my understanding) is the mask that is used to control the people
