The Mathematics of Vice

The Mathematics of Vice

In this channel, we will be exploring the math behind some of humankind's guilty pleasures. Please note that I am neither promoting these activities nor condemning them. My job is to inform, not to judge.

    Rules: 1- Casino wins in long run , 2- avoid slot machines as poor odds, 3. avoid alcohol so you don't make impaired decisions, 4. bring a certain amount of money you are willing to lose in exchange for the entertainment of gambling. Do NOT use the ATM. 5. Don't bet your whole wad on one bet, bet smaller so at least you get some entertainment value. He explains a deck of cards and odds of getting a 6 is 4/52 = 1/13.

    I googled whether casino's allow you to bring a printed strategy card, and they largely do. If you play perfectly with the right guide for the type of table (dealer staying on all17+ or just hard 17+) then you stand your best chance of minimizing your losses. Each time the authors simple rules deviate from the guide, you give an extra advantage to the house. So, you will lose faster with his rules than with a printable guide. But it has merit over no guide at all. Remember in your video not to use a phrase like "EVERY chance the dealer downcard will be a 10". It is NOTEVERY chance, it is a certain fraction of chances. You know this.

    This is very bad advice. If you were flipping fair coins for a 5$ initial bet and lost the first 5 rounds, and won on the 6th, your gain is only $5 (160 -80-40-20-10-5). Blackjack is NOT equivalent to flipping fair coins, as the house always has an advantage, and tables have limits, which means you can't keep doubling your bet. Good way to lose everything by not remembering things are NOT 50/50. Just continue with your $5 bets and enjoy the ambiance.

    Thanks for making this video, too many other ones just list the rules mindlessly without any explanation, this is a good insight into what's behind the basic strategy rules. Obviously your strategy from this video is "less perfect", but I still liked how it covers the majority of hands with reasoning that is easy to remember.

    Bad info at 19:10. He says the only thing that can beat your 19 is a 10 card. Nope. An Ace would beat you and push the other player with 21. In fact, if the Dealer has 21 it will be revealed right away and you lose without a chance to tie. And, yes, BJ is one of the worst games to play.

    In games of chance at a casino, you always lose in the long run no matter what you do, which is something I've said over and over in these videos. Thanks for the comments though!

    The first video in this series was great, but I'm not a fan of this one. First, you straight up said something false. You don't get the 3 to 2 payout on a ace and 10 value card after splitting aces, you would only get that payout on your FIRST two cards. I was hoping you were going to break down the mathematical reason why basic strategy works, but instead you just suggest your audience not follow basic strategy. So, this will lead to more money lost for people who actually listen to you. You ARE obviously very good at math, so I'm sure that's why you find this easier to learn than to look at a basic strategy chart, but speaking as a layman, I can guarantee this strategy is not easier than simply bringing your basic strategy chart to the table with you. So, following basic strategy would be both easier and would result in less money lost. Very disappointing!

    Poker is an interesting combination of logic and intuition. On the one hand, probability is a big piece of it. On the other, it also involves social engineering. It's not enough to know the odds, you also have to know how to manipulate your fellow players. I'm bad at that personally. There will be more vids at some point, but my regular job and other channels have sadly been taking all of my time.

    Basic strategy chart isn't that hard to memorize. I got it solid in my brain in a few weeks. If you're only doubling against a 4, 5, and 6, you're missing out on extra money. With a 9 yes, but on a ten or eleven, should be doubling more. You'll win more. And if math is your thing, just go ahead and learn to count cards.

  • @themathematicsofvice1652
    @themathematicsofvice16522 жыл бұрын

    I will be doing a video on counting cards! Personally I think counting cards isn't worth it because you need a very high initial bank roll in order to make the odds any different, and it ruins the fun of the game for me. Also, memorization is fine, but this is a channel about math.

    3:29 🧢 "if you make the right decision" so the (~) symbol is supposed to represent an unfixed/ fluctuating house edge? lol any given hand in cards is dependent on the previous deal. disregarding table rules a player can play suboptimal strategy or other players can influence the hand increasing the house edge stupendously in blackjack

  • @themathematicsofvice1652
    @themathematicsofvice16522 жыл бұрын

    Yep! If you make the wrong choices, you can increase the house edge, and you can take advantage of the fluctuating probabilities by counting cards. That'll be a future video, when I have the time :)

    At 06:03 I say $315 instead of $155 based on an earlier, incorrect calculation. At 07:01, I say "5 to 2" when I meant "3 to 2." It annoys me that I didn't catch these.

    Can someone explain how it's possible to consistently lose 6:1 hands wen I play rng blackjack??? Surely this is a fix!? Guaranteed the dealer will 4-5 hands in a row but I'm lucky to 2 in a row. This doesn't seem "random" to me!?

    Over a large hand sample size these win/loss streaks occur. To keep the house edge to just 0.5%, play on tables with favourable rules and execute basic strategy perfectly.

    I have found times where like you I've lost 5-6 in a row , even 10 in a row a few times, Now to try to avoid that. I watch for awhile and if it seems like the dealer is winning more than losing, not breaking much and seems to be making their hand a lot. I don't play there, another rule I set for myself is if I lose 4 hands back to back I walk away from that table, instead of hoping it's gonna get better. So far I've won several times with this method. Dealers seem to have hot and cold streaks and you definitely want to avoid their hot streaks

    Casinos are mostly illegal for Koreans in Korea (one exception) but allowed for people with other passports in Korea. I sat down at one blackjack table one time at one of these casinos as my only blackjack experience. I noticed too late that the minimum bet was $50 and was already dealt in. I don't remember the cards, but I lost that one hand and quit. These places are mostly for rich traveling business people not teachers like me.
