    The elam 251 is the best. Warm audio is decent but would need some extra effort to make it similar. I'm listening on good sennheiser headphones with an audio amplifier so it's very clear.

    The Neumann is a bit darker which a lot of people like better. The Warm Audio is definitely brighter all around. It might just be the enclosure making that difference, lol. *shrug*

    Hi, I'd really love you to look at the Microtech Gefell M92.1s. I'm currently getting to work with one and there aren't many comparison or review videos about it so I was wondering how you would feel about it. ;) From what I can tell, it's not quite the allrounder, but i did like it on various kinds of acoustic guitars and vocals that don't need to cut through a busy mix.

  • @berndhoecke8493
    @berndhoecke849320 күн бұрын

    I think with the acoustic guitar the mic placement was kind of an influence. I'd argue the ELAM was just at the sweet spot and the other microphones sounded just as you would expect from that little difference in position: The C24 - a little thinner, more wood - because slightly more from above The MP12 - a little more mud - because closer to the sound hole The WA251 - less body and more annoying strum noise - because slightly more towards the fret board Also I think on vocals the ELAM was the best at dealing with the room acoustics. On the WA251 I was the most distracted by how your room was responding to the singer. Hot take: if you combine the ELAM with a Neve 73, you might come close to the sound of the C24.. :)

    B58 is better in my opion. I think the Senheisers are too boomy and bright. By the time you eq the boominess out of them they're gonna sound thin. I would rather add a little high end with the Shure. Ive had great luck live with Shure. I think the best Shure is the SM86 Cardioid Condensor. It says Award winning Vocal Microphone on the box. So it must be known. Ive been singing almost 40 years and just discovered it a couple years ago . But i love it. I like it better than the Beta 87A Its my favorite live mic now. I sound a lot like Geddy Lee and its perfect for my voice.

    Nobody does better comparisons than you your subtle humor makes these so much more enjoyable to watch. 😄 I listened again with my headphones sounds a lot different than on my monitors and I have the Arc system from IK Multimedia on my monitors. Listened on my Focals, the ELAM is definitely the winner the C24 next and I like the MP the WA sounds a bit harsh but with a little EQ I think it would work. I didnt like it on the acoustic but I really think if the WA was positioned closer to the body it would be better. Again I think with eq it could be a good sounding mic. We are talking roughly an 11 thousand dollar difference .You convinced me to buy the WA67 for my vocals. They got a LOT closer with that one. But I agree, why so shiny? I'd love to hear some of your finished projects. Your have some beautiful hardware my friend. . Thanks for the info.

    Great Comparison Video and truly appreciate the time you and $ you put into this. I feel real bad for the Softube test, unfortunately there was some User Error in the demonstration. There is a DRY signal pot the works like a MIX knob/pot. When it’s on DRY you will not hear the effect/compression.

    Is it hard to get into running a studio like you do? I'm wanting to work with bands, even do live sound. I have enough microphones that will do what is needed out of a modern studio, but I've not really had much of a game plan as of yet - sadly. How does one get to your side of the "street", where you go from starting out to sustainability?

    Your Elam compresses the signal, and so "clamps & breathes" with it pleasantly. Most noticeable on the acoustic guitar. I find that subtle compression is a characteristic of the best mics. MP is much more sibilant than the others on vocal. WA has a push in nasal region, which is not good for this voice.

    Hre i am once again. I just wanted to say that after trying the La Comp i really miss a better sidechain filter. Even if it tries to be „faithful recreation“. …. i mean its software for christs sake :-)

    @@MasterclaesVideos i cannot describe it better than i did tbh. I just want a „modern“ SC filter which is giving me the flexibility of completely excluding low end from the compression or working in a band selective way and in general gives me much more flexibility on what the detector circuit listens to. To the other part, „other untrue clones“,,,, but i want the one that sounds the nearest to the original, not others that only try to be similar but fail to do so convincingly

    Difficult source (fingerstyle acoustic guitar). A hard test for plugins, and they pump, while the hardware can handle the source. For slower sources like vocals, some of the plugins do a good job. My favored LA plugins in my own usage are the UAD Silver, and sometimes the gray. Hardware often has an extra layer of subtle limiting effect, even when it's compression action is slow. So the Silver, with it's tighter timings, ends up "feeling" more like hardware when I use it, just because slightly more density is added. (not referring here to this shootout, where the hardware sounds like it's compressing the least, due to handling the source better. I'm just speaking in general) The Waves bounces all over the place like a drunken sailor.

  • @FreakinOutOnAudio

    As always, the attack portion on the hardware is laughably superior in sound and meat to the plugins. -The UAD is closest to the hardware in tone, and on the 'crush' portion of the compression, though it crushes the attack as well, unlike the hardware and overloud. -Rooster is way too slow and polite compared to the hardware. Sounds fine, just not like an LA-3A. -CLA is clicky, hard pass. -Overloud is closest to the hardware on the attack, but the UAD is closer on the crush portion and tone.

  • @MasterclaesVideos
    @MasterclaesVideos4 ай бұрын

    Thanks for your insight! What i also noticed: when using a HW unit on a kick with a busy pattern, the compression does not stick as much as with plugins, the release behaviour seems to work better. Have you noticed that?

  • @FreakinOutOnAudio
    @FreakinOutOnAudio4 ай бұрын

    Yeah, for sure. I should clarify one part of my comment: like you said in the video, the hardware the UAD is modelling has a fast attack time, so the plugin is probably supposed to crush the attack. Hi Peter, hitting g you up to say how much I enjoyed this comparison review very much. Your innate ability to bring just enough levity to what I’d often a dry and boring subject is refreshing. Gonna check out the 251. 15 years ago tbd tech at Metropolis Studio, London offered me a matched pair of C12s for £2500 since one of the mics was constantly needing repair. This is why I didn’t purchase them. This predated Nashville’s insatiable hunger for the damn. I’ve been on sessions where 4 pairs were used. There’s good news though. In the past 18 months the C12 has depreciated in value. Down from a median pride of $33,000 to a mere $28000! Yet I don’t hear a stampede of folks rushing to stock up on a pile of them. Wonder why?
