    Hmm. This is not a game but an activity for kids. None of the choices are meaningful. Can't win or loose.

  • @alisonfrane6758
    @alisonfrane675810 күн бұрын

    Yup. It is absolutely an activity not a game (just as many might argue RPGs, despite the "G", aren't really games either, since there isn't technically a way to win or lose). This is why the title of the video is "How to Play with" not "How to Play," and why Looney Labs does not describe it as a "game" but a "fortune telling toy." Frankly, it was difficult to pick quite the right words to describe it, since "toy" does make it sound childish. You probably feel that's an appropriate descriptor, but obviously anyone can use it, like, for example, role-players of any age. Though the results might not be "meaningful" to you, they can mean as much as someone wants them to mean. Looney Labs does absolutely acknowledge the advice cards are "cryptic." Anyhow, this video represents the product pretty well, and shows off its implementation on Roll20. If it's not what you dig, you can steer clear. 🙂

    Nice. I've been getting into solo RPGs, and one of the things you need to spice things up is a good oracle to give your stories unexpected twists. Probably going to look into this.

    Excellent - but at 3:35 why did you not dig the small piece upright where it was to win? Am I missing something here?

  • @alisonfrane6758
    @alisonfrane6758Ай бұрын

    Because this is a tutorial, not a game. Andy isn't playing against anyone, so he's not trying to get his pieces matching ASAP. He's just showing off the different kinds of moves. If he'd chosen to DIG the small in place, yes, he would have won, if it were a game, but he still hadn't shown the viewer HOP. He probably didn't realize that his situation offered a winning option on the DIG (one example too early). He was just running through example scenarios, and hadn't finished yet. Ideally he'd have planned his examples more precisely so they didn't offer that confusing non-winning play.

    Two questions. Can you move past a portal on a move or do you have to activate it? And, do you remove the remaining goals from the deck after the first 5?

  • @alisonfrane6758
    @alisonfrane6758Ай бұрын

    The rulesheet says (under Types of Spaces) that when you land on a Portal, you are instantly teleported to the other one. You could, of course, then spend a move to "step" back to the one you landed on, and continue on your merry way, but you can't just pass through it as though it were an Octagon or Leaper space. As for whether you remove the remaining Goals after the first five, no. You pull five Goals from the deck (it doesn't really matter whether they're the "first" five since you're going to reshuffle the remainder of the deck before you deal out hands), and you leave the rest of the Goals in the deck to be possibly dealt into hands or drawn on people's turns. In the rules (under Collecting Goals) it says, "If all the cards in the Goal stack are gone, it simply remains empty until more Goals are played." Obviously it would be impossible to play more Goals if you removed all of the Goals except those first 5 from the deck. Frankly, however, I've found that most of the time, when the Goal stack is empty, nobody wants to play a Goal out there for anyone to get, they mostly play Goals only when they are already in a position to gain them instantly when played from their hand. Here's a link to the rulesheet if KZread will let me include it here: www.looneylabs.com/lit/rules/fluxx-board-game-compact-edition-rules

    I'm just discovering Homeworlds now and I think there is an even easier solution for Andy. First move is sacrifice medium red at homeworld for two attacks at John's homeworld taking both the red and a green. Now John can't grow another green as then there would be 4 greens and any call of catastrophe would be a loss, he also can't swap the colour of his last small green because then next turn Andy would just take it as he has a red in the system, again leading to a loss. This means the only options are for John to do something to put the pressure on Andy with his other ships. At best John could move a single red to Andy's homeworld either via simple move or medium yellow sacrifice which is just too slow as Andy could just take the remaining homeworld piece again for the win. John could trade the medium yellow to another colour, but that is just way too slow, leaving Andy enough time to pick off the remaining homeworld ship, so is once again a non-starter. The only remaining moves are to get reds back to his own homeworlds, but given the positions of them there is no way to get two reds back in one turn meaning Andy can pick them off one at a time. Even if John can cause a catastrophe it will only be in red or green and include all of his homeworld ships, which would be an instant loss. I think from the above the medium red homeworld sacrifice opener from Andy puts John in a truly unwinnable situation very easily and with very little room for maneuver.

    How many pieces per grouping are you allowed to use when creating the first two examples? Can you use 8 pieces in a grouping just to throw someone off?

  • @LooneyLabs
    @LooneyLabs5 ай бұрын

    Hi @annamonarrez2775! Yes, you could use 8 pieces in a grouping when creating the first two examples if you want to. There is no limit to the number of pieces in any particular structure. That said, the moderator's job is more like a GM... a leader, not a nemesis. As moderator, you are making sure that everything is clear and correctly marked. As these rules are trickier than they seem, you are more likely to want to help the players with a counterexample that is useful when they are at a loss, than throw them off right at the beginning. We hope you have fun playing Zendo!

    Can you create as many stars as you want/need? And does it take multiple actions? Can you also use those actions if you sacrifice a big ship?

  • @LooneyLabs
    @LooneyLabs6 ай бұрын

    You have only one action per turn. That action could be used to create a single star by using the power of yellow to discover that new star. That action could also be used to sacrifice a large yellow, giving you three moves. If you used them all to discover new stars, you could potentially create as many as three stars in one turn in that way. Keep in mind that all of this is only possible if the needed size and color of pyramid is available in the bank. If the bank is empty, you cannot create any new stars.

    Though we aren't making any guarantees, we do hope to have another one in 2026 for our 30th anniversary. We also have plans to get back out to conventions more, provided this darn pandemic cooperates. We will be guests of honor at MidSouthCon in March, and will be at Gen Con again in 2024 (hopefully with Andy). More plans are in the works... the best way to stay on top of where we are is to subscribe to the Lab Notes newsletter (link at our web page, looneylabs.com). Hoping to see you soon!
