Liking biology is not the same as caring for chickens. You can’t be a biologist for example, based on caring for chickens.
This is our 4th year homeschooling and we’ve evolved into just what you’re saying here. So great to hear you put it so eloquently!
Im looking forward to playing with my kids as we learn! Its going to be my first year hm my boy in 1st and my daughter in 3rd. My boy is super energetic and was able to sit still and excel in public school but i believe he will still learn without having to do tons of worksheets. He loves to be outside and play sports and my daughter is very independent and she loves art! Im excited that they eill be able to learn by playing and making things
I just got my husband on board for homeschooling yay🎉! But he is worried I won't succeed and in my opinion I think we'll love it and soar but he wants to put them back in for middle school. My problem is if I let them free learn I'm worried that what we do won't be enough to pass standardized testing to go back,,,

I’ve been struggling with my newly diagnosed adhd child with her reluctant learning this past year and I’m terrified to honestly throw curriculum in front of her in the next couple weeks that we go back. I’m so structured and she thrives on structure but I can’t seem to find balance when planning I keep adding /taking out / not simplifying and yet still asking myself what is education? Sigh. Feeling lost lately. Thank you for the insight I need to find something to push me into unschooling where my heart feels guided to.

I am frustrated. The umbrella program I have been using isn't in favor of unschooling, as far as I can tell, I don't know what else to do. My kids are "behind" on math and my oldest is about to start ninth grade so I am having them do math over the summer to "catch up" and they aren't happy but understand our circumstances. Oh, but I am so tired of having to use an umbrella but we are stuck here for now (Maryland).
Plenty of kids in public school are “behind😊
Im an ex public school teacher as well. I quit and started homeschooling after I read Summerhill by A.S. Neill. Its about a school in England that is still there after 100 years!

This is the problem with public school. As an institution, it completely ignores the individual person: their emotional and developmental stage. The school system is just another way to put cogs (children) in the proverbial wheel to keep the machine going. Hence the massive academic casualties we continue to see today.

I homeschool and unschool. For language and math my kids will do online or a work book. But no pressure and they Learn on their day to day. My daughter is 12 and she already knows what she wants to do with her life. She wants to become a baker. She is artistic loves to draw and put characters in her story books that she creates. I just support her in what she wants to do and that encourages her. So she focuses on baking, plays piano and likes to sing. My son that’s 9 is good with numbers and math. I never actually taught him he just figured it out himself. He can solve a cube under 1 minute and he likes chess ♟️ and basketball 🏀 and I just encourage him in that. My kids read every day wherever we go and when they watch TV they love to read subtitles. 😊 My kids learn and work to earn their own money. If you have kids in the public school system and they are asking to be homeschooled or unschooled. You should listen to them and give them a chance.

My boys love Nathan Hale! My nine year has described ww1 in detail after reading one of the books, he probably knows more about it than most adults 😅
Ever tried Science Fiction? And I do not mean stuff like Star Wars. The best description for that is Space Fantasy. Try: *A Fall of Moondust* by Arthur C Clarke He used Plato's Allegory of the Cave to explain infrared perception of reality. *Orphans of the Sky* & *Citizen of the Galaxy* by Robert Heinlein *The Gods Themselves* by Isaac Asimov *The Two Faces of Tomorrow* by James P Hogan Good SF can contain scientific, technological and social ideas. Most of the "fight the alien invaders" is just shallow, macho entertainment. But interesting aliens are possible: *The Gibraltar Earth trilogy* by Michael McCollum I started reading science fiction in 4th grade. A nun told my older sister, "science and religion don't mix". I decided to go to college for engineering in 7th grade. School is about psychological conditioning and memorization.
These are such great insights! When you think about it, it is so unlikely that the current model of public education would give each individual child what they need at the time they need it. I loved hearing your perspective!
I've been considering going from a structured, 'purist' Charlotte Mason approach, to something more relaxed/CM inspired for a couple of years! I also have five children, oldest is 12, but my worry is that my younger ones will fall through the cracks without a structured schedule we have to follow. And the schedule also keeps me from being distracted by housework, online work, errands. When my older ones were little I spent so much time with them, but now that we have different ages it been really hard to balance everyone's needs (my 9 and 11 yo do not work independently at all and would spend all day reading Calvin and Hobbes and running around outside 😬)

I’m currently doing my research on homeschooling/unschooling. Eventually when my kids are done with there private elementary school after 6th grade, they would have to go to public school which I’m strongly against. My husband is strongly against homeschooling. Like you said, it’s hard to not picture how to school like the public school. My question is how do you go about getting a transcript and the paperwork you need to get into colleges?
Any way of Homeschooling/unschooling can be successful or a disaster. I have a child who loves me teaching them and one who loves learning on their own. Neither would be successful without an immense amount of work on my part. Most kids can’t be just set 100% free I’ve seen too many kids fail this way and it’s devastating to see.
Same can be said about some students in the traditional school system..🤷🏽♀️

I personally find interest lead creates more lasting memories. Sure I can choose a topic, but I can allow a lot of flexibility within that topic. As we have all experience in our own lives, just because information is presented doesn’t mean one retains it. I also feel like those that lean on traditional instruction, feel a sense of security, as if that boxed curriculum is going to give them a better outcome but as we know, there are no guarantees, and there is no special perfect formula. I am enjoying your videos 👍 BTW your eyes are very pretty. I don’t see the link to the book, who is the author?

This can go both ways. I've seen children with learning disabilities not getting help until much later due to parents waiting. Then a lot of the neurological pathways are set and harder to be helped. I've seen this especially with speech and phonological errors that do affect the entire language system.
Happens in the public school all the time. It's the mindset that the children will outgrow it.
If I might push back on your potty training example, you are actually making the argument for the another position here. The point is to go at your child's pace, right? So a 2 year old may potty train just as fast as a 3 year old because they were simply ready to learn the skill of using the potty. In your example you mentioned your 2-year olds had a longer learning time while your 3 year olds learned in a matter of days. This is an argument for delayed learning rather than child-led learning.
I see it as both. Usually potty training at 2yo is initiated by parents, not kids. They are anxious to be free of diapers and ready to have a child who is potty trained. A child who is ready to be potty trained will often initiate on their own. Many times delayed and child-led learning go hand in hand. 🙂
@@SiloandSage that's interesting. My experience with child-led learning is quite the opposite. My oldest gave all the signs to potty train right after his second birthday. And my other child kept asking about the human body to the point of us doing 3rd grade level work just to satisfy her curiosity. I felt silly doing another unit study on the human body with a 3 year old but that's what she wanted. And while my oldest falls on the later end of normal for reading skills, he was (and still is) certainly eager to learn to read from around 3. I find when I attempt to delay their learning I've either missed the opportunity to show them something while they're heavily interested or, more likely, they will try to find a way to learn what they like on their own. I'm not sure why my kids are so impatient in this regard but maybe they will slow down the older they get.
@@Sandyyyyyyyyyy I think you might be misunderstanding what I’m saying. I’m not talking about delaying a child’s learning when they are interested and ready. Or delaying just for the sake of delaying. I think learning happens best when we follow our kids’ interests AND their readiness. My potty training analogy isn’t perfect here, of course, it’s just an example. But the point is that timelines are arbitrary. And when it comes to learning, we need to stop following them, and let our kids learn on THEIR timelines or when THEY show interest and readiness. Especially in the younger years. I certainly wouldn’t stop a child from learning something early or that they’re interested in. I’ve had kids who learned to read early and others who’ve learned to read later - I waited until they were ready AND interested, and they all learned very quickly as a result and all love reading. That’s the point - pushing back on timelines of when learning “should” happen and letting our kids’ interests and development lead the way, whether that’s “early” or “late.”
@@SiloandSage I generally agree with your overall premise. That's why I commented on the potty-training analogy. It might confuse someone unfamiliar with child-led learning when they compare it to other methods of learning that wait until a child is 6 to teach them to read, for example. The argument of those who choose to delay their children's ability to read is usually that they learn how to do so extremely fast when the time comes. I find that when my children show interest in something, I can find a way to feed that interest. Even if they may not be fully ready to learn that new skill or complex bit of information, we can start the scaffolding to get them there. That's essentially what you mean by delaying until your child is ready, right?
