Stimulating and engaging conversations on great books and big ideas. Listen, learn, and think more deeply about the topics that move our collective minds. I engage the nation's leading scholars on free speech but also talk with students, philosophers and writers about the ways in which freedom of expression is truly the lifeblood of democracy. In the Great Books section, I speak with writers, academics, and others about books that truly did something new: add a voice that had not been acknowledged or heard in the public before; account for experiences previously silenced, outlawed or forgotten; devise a new way of telling one's story; or celebrate the human capacity for invention and creation in pathbreaking ways.

    I am reading Ned Blackhawk's The Rediscovery of America: Native Peoples and the Unmaking of U.S. History. He mentions Jane Johnson Schoolcraft creating the term Native Inland Sea, that was then used by James Fenimore Cooper in his book title, The Pathfinder: The Inland Sea. I'm exploring both writers and am happy to discover this podcast as a first step in learning more about Ms. Schoolcraft and her poetry

    Ulrich Baer - I find it interesting that you named this large series, "Free Speech." I read in your bio, this: "deepens his widely debated defense of the university’s right and obligation to arbitrate discourse (rather than surrender to an absolutist, anything-goes approach to speech) he first made in 2017 in The New York Times." - this sounds a bit not-so-free speech like Ulrich. Is this a case of another leftist using deceptive language, to disguise the true nature of their radical ideology? Whatever the case, the contradiction between the titles of your videos, and the contradictory viewpoint as revealed in your bio, is confusing and suspect.

An aside: Interview took place in what I assume is Bernstein’s apartment? What a wonderfully ecclectic collection ….. the Nakashima pieces in partcicular caught my attention. I read Delgados book yesterday and I think I made about 15 pages of notes listing problems with the books arguments and even factual errors. But you can almost sum it up by pointing to the last part of the discussion here where Delgado bizarrely argues that threats to the press from the powerful are a good reason to weaken the 1st Amendment. It's so strange to see someone make so many incoherent arguments. Delgado and Baer for some reason blame the 1st Amendment for failing the civil rights movement when those convictions were overturned on 1st Amendment grounds. I'm not sure what else to call this but dishonest. They are discounting the enormous progress that has been made BECAUSE of the 1st Amendment and blaming it for the worst elements in society. If you're interested watch Ulrich debate Charles CW Cooke on free speech at Kenyon College. He makes similar arguments but gets called on it. Cooke shows how Ulrich is making the free speech case inadvertently but leaving out the obvious to try to twist the facts. He also gets called out by Steven Pinker and is unable to respond.

    We need more critical race theory!!! Not because it calls for banning speech but because it calls us to ask questions. The people I’m the comments saying that we shouldn’t ban nazis from speaking are the same people who would like crt to be banned. Clearly they’ve never heard the saying “being intolerant of intolerance”.

  • @sug1733

    We shouldn't ban Nazis from speaking because that is the only way their ideas will be exposed as intellectually and ethically wrong. The same goes for CRT.

  • @somexp12
    @somexp122 жыл бұрын

    CRT asks for a hell of a lot more than mere free speech. "Banning" it does not refer to hindering its free speech but denying it the highly privileged position it demands, a position we would never consider giving to Nazis, or Republicans . . . or Vegans. To the extent people want to "ban" CRT, this applies to using it to bully captive audiences into adopting its precepts. Another concern is that it functions as a toolbox for cynical grievance generation for the purpose of manipulating others. The latter is not something to be banned, but people ought be warned against entertaining it. Simply sharing your views in the normal way is not something most care to ban.

    As a democratic socialist I DEFEND the FREE SPEECH , FREE THOUGHT , FREEDOM OF CONSCIENCE tradition of Western Civilization. I find it very ironic that so many advocates -indeed pillars - of CRITICAL RACE THEORY are shameless defenders of Zionist APARTHEID Israel. No surprise that many BLACK LIVES MATTER groups are flying Palestinian flags. I do not a want a mainstream news media - clearly dominated by pro-Zionists - to decide for me WHO I can listen to , WHO I can read, who is a messenger of HATE , who is NAUGHTY , and who is NICE , who are the Truth Tellers and Who are the Liars . The generic or " pseudo " Left- guided, in fact, by the Democratic Party- and the New York Times is becoming NOT " socialist " but more and more STALINIST in theory and practice. SOCIALISM will never be established by UNDEMOCRATIC means as it calls for the LIBERATION of the majority of the human race from capitalist WAGE SLAVERY and imperialism. Real socialists focus more on CLASS inequality and CLASS injustice and CLASS war while recognizing the historic reality of racism. NOTE : WHY THE CROSS OUTS ? WHAT DOES THAT PROVE ?
