    Back when I was teaching, I recommended the 6 color paint palette for my students to purchase. As you have demonstrated in this video it is the best and most practical palette to work with. I wish paint manufacturers would box paint like this as starter sets to get beginners off on the right foot. You might want to do a follow up video expanding on this palette by explaining color bias in paints and why if the 2 colors you are mixing have all 3 primaries, such as in the case of ultramarine blue and cad yellow medium you end up with a de-saturated color as a result. The bias in paint is tricky and can really mess up your color mixing if you are not aware of it. THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!!!!

    It’s amazing how different the hie of the various burnt and raw siennas are between different brands. I find many burnt siennas are too red and most raw siennas are too yellow.

    Hi, I have a question. I have one tube of OH Raw Umber and one tube of OH Burnt Umber.The OH Raw Umber takes a very long time to dry, while the OH Burnt Umber dries fast. Have you come across this dramatic difference between Raw and Burnt Umber?

  • @walcottfineart5088
    @walcottfineart50886 күн бұрын

    Typically earth colors do tend to dry faster so I'm not sure why the Old Holland Raw Umber is taking a long time to dry. It's possible they might be mixing another pigment in with it that could cause that. It may also depend on the exact type of Raw Umber they're using. If it's low in Manganese that would make the drying time longer. Thanks for watching!

    I'm looking for a perfect neutral blue. My project is trying to make a perfect black. Can you recommend a blue that is perfectly in the middle? A true blue? Thank you.

  • @walcottfineart5088
    @walcottfineart50886 күн бұрын

    Cobalt Blue is pretty neutral in mass tone, but it tends to be on the opaque side which means it won't make a super dark black. The best dark black comes from mixing Ultramarine with Burnt Sienna. You can play with the proportions a bit to get it neutral. Thanks for watching! :)

    Hello, how to prevent oil paints from drying out in a tube that has not been used for two to three years or more?

  • @walcottfineart5088
    @walcottfineart508812 күн бұрын

    In truth a well made oil paint should not dry in the tube and should remain usable indefinitely as long as the tube is sealed and remains air tight. However certain pigments or a compromised tube can cause this to happen. The only thing I can think of that would prevent that if you are haivng problems, is to store the tubes in the freezer when you aren't using them. It slows down the drying process. Thanks for watching! :)

    In my mind (and I’m fairly new to watercolor) I see reds (pr254 or 209), then pv19 rose red or carmines, pr122 magenta, pv19 magenta purple (the quin violet), pv55 purple (red shade and then blue shade like in Van Gogh), pv23 violet and then pv15 blue shade which is smalt dumont blue. I think there is a 24 color color wheel by Jane Blundell that is a great reference to visualize something like that. I like those darker quinacridones as well for that strange temperature shift they have. They do the same thing in watercolor comparing the mass tone and the diluted tone (paint out of tube vs watered down)

    You call thalo "warm" LOL! Was doing okay until you classed Ultra as cool and thalol as warm. Complete opposite to the rest of us as I've come to learn so far after 40 years painting. Never mind, temperatures is probably the most subjective area of colour but I think you'll find the blues from warm to cool are: Ultramarine (red shade) Ultramarine (green shade) cobalt, ,cerulean, cobalt teal, then thalo(the coolest blue).

    I have heard of the bismuth yellow but have not tried it in oil paint. i did try it in watercolor and i's not quite as intense as the Cadmium. You can always get a small tube and see if it works for you. There's nothing like Cadmiums though, so I'm sticking with that. :) Thanks for watching!

    The cracks in very old(or sometimes not so old) is because the support is subject to movement , flexible surfaces will always cause the paint to crack over time. Have you seen the Balthasar Denner oils on copper in The Louvre? !749 the paint surface is perfect!

  • @walcottfineart5088
    @walcottfineart5088Ай бұрын

    Yes that is very true! The support makes a huge difference. I do like painting on the archival canvas/linen panels as I think they will hold up better over time. Stretched canvas has to be cared for properly. Thanks for watching! :)

    When i mix burnt umber and cadmium yellow light, I get a green tone. ... dude I bought transparent brown oxide and it makes ALL the difference. Burnt umber does NOT work- makes it green.

  • @walcottfineart5088
    @walcottfineart5088Ай бұрын

    It can depend on the particular brand sometimes. Also, the color in my videos isn't always accurate due to the camera quality. Burnt Umber and Cad Yellow will indeed make a slightly greenish tone which is actually perfect for brass which can sometimes have a greenish cast to it. For Gold you can use the Transparent Brown Oxide which is warmer. Thanks for watching!

    Nice mixing sir. I believe to mix more of a neutral gray color, the colors used have to be cool AND lean cool. So burnt sienna can be mixed usually by mixing orange and blue, but the addition of some black will lean this mix more COOL. Now, mixing this mix with a cool color like ultramarine will do the trick with making neutral looking grays.

  • @walcottfineart5088
    @walcottfineart5088Ай бұрын

    Yes with a little work you can get to a nearly neutral gray. But colored grays usually work better as they add visual interest to a painting. Thanks for watching! :)

    I just finished watching all 3 videos in this series. My question is could you use dry pastels over chalk paint? I like to paint furniture but was looking for another medium to do artwork over my painted backgrounds. Canvas painting isn’t my thing, although I am always intrigued to watch other artists just create and use color. I have seen a doll artist use pastels and colored pencils on her doll and then seal with something. Have not tried it, but I had never seen anybody use those 2 mediums on plastic. I mostly upcycle my own furniture; wood, leather, fabric….those are my chosen canvases😊 Any thoughts are tips about dry pastels over chalk paint would be appreciated. Thank you!

    Good demo. Since the oil penetrates the acrylic gesso on panels or canvas, if I were to use these I would make sure now there is a size layer. I have been leery of claims that the gesso works as a size. So while making my own panels, am applying GAC 100 before putting down gesso or an oil or alkyd ground.
