  These 9-segment VFDs are fascinating! They could be used for displaying most alphanumeric characters, and I may get a bunch of Soviet counterparts to make something fun in my lab someday. Like, displaying KERI-TECH-TUBE-AMPS in a loop, or something :)

  I think some contact is going intermittent on the breadboard, the power is not decoupled properly or there's parasitic capacitance shenanigans - but that's just my wild guess.

  Loveliness! If the input is one of 10, then there's certainly a diode matrix decoder inside. 4028? Thanks for the idea - these chips are dirt cheap and readily available. I'll try using it combined with HV FETs for controlling Nixie tubes just like you did here, instead of using the nearly-unobtainium 74141 or its Soviet counterpart named K155ID1.

  Can you please explain what an LCD Backplane is? I am trying to hack an old car stereo LCD display, which is driven by a PCF8566, which uses three backplane outputs (of four) to LCD, then uses 17 (of 24) LCD Segment outputs. Theres another six pins in the LCD but not sure where they go yet. Trying to control it all thru an Arduino.
