Hi Tiffany! I started seeing your videos after watching MrsSchoolPsych’s videos and the vid you both did. Your information and here motivated me/was so helpful in my application process. I just got accepted to a school psych program (specialist program) and was wondering if it’d be possible to connect via email or IG message. I didn’t want to follow on IG without first asking! I believe you mentioned being in ESOL (English for Students who speak other Languages) and as someone who is a bilingual professional /was in ESOL herself, it’s motivating to see you in the field. I’m also a first time mom and would love to know your tips on juggling this program and a child! :)

We spent the 60s, the 70s, the 80s, the 90s dismantling systemic racism in the U.S. yet there still is racism because racism is a SOCIAL DISEASE that is generally taught in the home. Reject racism. By the way, Black Lives Matter turned out to be a money grab.

It really hurts mentally to 'like" listen to this and "like" pay attention because " like" I hear alot of "like" words that should not be there .....and it makes those who are " like " talking sound very " like " uneducated and " like" uncomfortable with what they are talking about and " like" not so sure about what they are " like" talking about......

Around the 28-29 minute mark you mention burnout from the job, and you're getting paid, as non-autistic adults, to do it. And whom are you doing the ABA to, against their will? Kids with far less capacity to do the hours, over long periods of time, even if it were not otherwise abusive to autistics in so many ways. At the end of the day, you have the ability to go home and get away from it, and quit if you're tired. The poor kids subjected to it don't even have hoke as their safe place away from it, and their only "escape" is compliance. Meanwhile, it eats all their time they could be learning how to be a kid, a severely undervalued learning situation.

It’s important to acknowledge that people in this field sometimes feel overwhelmed and in need of support, even though we chose this path to help children. We strive to empower kids with essential life skills, with the consent and trust of their parents. I can’t speak for everyone but we often incorporate ABA practices into fun activities or daily routines, like getting ready for school or prepping a snack.

Hi, I am very interested in becoming a school psychologist but I read a lot of comments about others wishing they chose a different career and that the job is extremely demanding. I have no issues with a demanding job as long as I get breaks and time alone to regroup. I apologize for the long comment in advance and hope that you get a chance to respond. 1.How much free time do you typically get on a work day? 2. What characteristics make a good school psychologist? 3. Is conflict common with this job? 4. What is the quality of life like for a school psychologist during the school year? 5. In your opinion, Would your typical SP have enough energy to be a part time therapist after work hours?

I see a lot of people become ABA therapist because they genuinely want to provide support for autistic youth, which I strongly respect. Unfortunately, the ABA industry is highly manipulative and deceptive in how it represents itself. It posits itself as "evidence-based" by only examining behavioral outcomes of autistic youth while entirely neglecting the cognitive outcomes. As a result, autistic people often report high levels of distress from their experiences in ABA therapy, but due to their training, they are forced to mask their distress. Although it might seem benign, especially since ABA has a great deal of emphasis on reinforcement, it is ultimately teaching autistic youth how to mask rather than how to develop healthy coping mechanisms. As an autistic person myself, I do not expect that ABA therapists will be able to drop their jobs overnight, since everyone has to make a living, and many people are in financial circumstances which can make switching jobs immediately extremely difficult. That said, I do encourage current RBTs to research the ABA field and hear the testimonies of autistic people themselves, as well as delve deeper into some of the research and ethical analyses on the subject. Some journals will post apologist content on behalf of industry, only for the authors to be founders of ABA organizations themselves. And while this alone does not inherently dismiss the credibility of the publications, they have a tendency to misrepresent or conceal crucial aspects of criticism directed towards their field. Hence, publications by these people should be considered with skepticism, especially given that they have a strong conflict of interest. If you as a current RBT (or someone considering becoming an RBT) desire to assist autistic youth, then there are many wonderful therapies that can be beneficial. Occupational therapy, many speech therapies, and cognitive-behavioral therapies are all excellent routes to pursue. There should always be an emphasis on the cognitive aspect of therapy and not just the behavioral.

I'm considering to pursue a School Psychology PhD program, and I found your video very informative and helpful. Thank you so much for sharing! I wonder whether a school psychologist need to do all the work you mentioned in your video or they could have a more specialized role and specific responsibilities? Usually, how many students would a school psychologist cover in average? I think it may depend on the local educational policies but I really appreciate if you could share some data about that. Again, thank you!!

People skills are a must. Teacher buy in is necessary. I agree that grad school provides a great foundation for you to feel confident but nothing can prepare you for that interpersonal dynamic with school staff. I agree that when faced with barriers we learn real quick that systematic change is like making a turn with a cruise ship, aka, it’s going to take time. That sucks. Being in a system, seeing areas for improvement and knowing that there are key stakeholders and budgets involved to make a change sucks. That hurts me to my core because children are involved
