The life and adventures of a retired London Underground train driver.
My name's Paul Rigby and I recently retired after almost 22 years of working for London Underground.
I launched this channel with the first video in a series covering my last day, driving trains on the Jubilee Line.
Future content will include travel, lots of travel I hope, because what's an adventure without some sort of travel being involved ?
And then there will be videos who's subject will come from the inevitable challenges that life will throw at someone who has retired without a proper plan. And even more videos on topics that I haven't even thought of yet.

Well done Sir. I used to get the Jubilee Line Train from Westminster to Bermondsey and then walk through the council estate opposite Bermondsey Tube Station and make my way through to the River Thames and walk from Tower Bridge to Westminster Bridge. It was lovely to see all lights in the evening and during the day it was a pleasant walk. Then I would walk to Waterloo Station and get the 21 00 pm train home to Portsmouth.
You not going to Stanmore depot to go to Stratford and north Greenwich because its time for your retirement
in the course of your career you've seen the tracks next to the jubilee line between stratford and canning town change from NLL to DLR, the end of wayside signals on the Jubilee, the addition of a seventh carriage, both A and S stock on the Met, and the 1996 stock refurbishment. also there was the period when it was part of the "Tube Lines" enterprise. You've made so many Londoners' lives more convenient and the TFL will miss having a great driver.
12:43 does the "WES" mean the points are set towards westminster?
Yes, 👍
7:06 did that used to be a surface stock detector?
Not sure what your asking about , I’ll go back and have a look👍
1:25 I have never seen that kind of switch before, where one point moves but not the other
👍 something new eh
what is the deal with that signal at neasden?
My aunt works for London underground I drove once with her when I was little
👍an experience you’ll never forget 👍👍
I really enjoyed your mini series. I hope you are enjoying your well earned feet up time. Cheers
Thank you, I’m pleased you enjoyed and yes I’m enjoying life 👍👍
Where did you used to pick up trains in the morning and drop off at the end of the day? Stanmore, Neasden?
Good Question and yes Stanmore or Neasden and also at Stratford Market depot 👍👍
Enjoy your well deserved retirement 😊
Thank you 👍👍
16:35…….love the way you sit there as the train is moving like Captain Kirk at the helm of the enterprise! Hope you are enjoying life at a leisurely pace now and not at warp speed👍
Thank you, I like that description 😀. I am enjoying life and the pace? I don’t know about warp speed but time definitely goes too fast, I’d swap that enterprise for the doctors Tardis anytime 🤣🤣👍👍
Could somebody clean the windscreen?
🤣🤣 they do get extremely dirty and believe it or not trains regularly go through a train wash and have a screen wash !! 👍
Are you not gonna drive any jubilee line because you are done driving just let me know its just an idea?
👍👍
Was there signal failure at Wembley park because you were late about there is a traffic?
Thanks for your comments, I’m not driving anymore because I decided to retire 👍👍
2:26 there goes the metropolitan line S stock train going past you on the left running non stop as far as Finchley Road where it does stop
Aldgate or Baker Street 👍
I wonder why the Jubilee Line gas so many signal failures. Green Park most common.
I don’t know if the Jubilee Line has more signal failures than other lines .I think Wembley Park area might have more than Green Park but I’ve never seen any statistics on that 👍👍
You should do daily vlogs sir
Wow signal failure? That's unfortunate! Thanks for your service Sir and the video. Hope you have a fantastic retirement!! 💖
Thanks for your good wishes, I’m enjoying retirement 👍👍
Not sure if you are still reading these comments but I hope the last few months have been good for you. Im sure it is bittersweet leaving a job you enjoyed and now not going to work but I hope you have found something fulfilling to do in your time off.
Yes, I still read all comments, thank you. I am enjoying retirement and I’m having trouble finding the time to everything I want do 🤣👍👍
Enjoy your retirement 😊
Thank you , I am 👍
Well done sir! Please consider re-recording your voice-over.
Thanks for the advice, I’ll consider it 👍
Thank you for a wonderful insight journey. I had no idea some Tube trains ran automatically like DLR trains. Is it saver? Boring for you? I've seen plenty Tube train videos with manual drive. So are more trains becoming automatic equipped? Have a happy retirement!
Thanks for watching, I’m pleased you enjoyed. Yes it’s definitely safer and I didn’t find it boring at all. And I’m very happy with retirement thank you👍
Congratulations on your retirement great videos I have a question why at some stations is there a glass barrier between the trains and the platform
Thank you for watching, your best wishes and your interesting question. There is a misconception that the glass barrier between the track and platform is for safety purposes. The section of track was completed to open the extended jubilee line from green park in 2000, and is referred to as “ the extension “. This new section included a tunnel ventilation system that can blow in either direction when needed and the glass walls and platform edge doors are to stop that air from dissipating through the platforms, the tunnel ventilation system wouldn’t work without them. The obvious safety benefit is really just a bonus. I hope that answer is ok. Thanks again 👍👍
Thank you for answering my question I totally understand now
@@1964bricklayer 👍👍
The New Tube for London in 2025 Release Date are you Interested it's just an idea 🇬🇧
I don’t know what that is, so I can’t say either way 👍
Really interesting video, thank you for 23 years of service and all the best for retirement!
Thanks for your best wishes 👍👍
Thank you for your service, and even though I'm 5 months late, the jubilee line is my local underground line
Thank you for watching and your kind comment 👍👍
Not being a hater but if it was your last time driving the tube why dont you do it manully
That’s a fair question. I drove the train manually to leave Stanmore sidings because that’s the rule. Had I been instructed to drive manually at anytime during my shift, I would have. And I preferred ATO over driving manually 👍👍
@@itsjustanidea Ahhh ok thank you god bless you thanks for your service.
@@user-gg4bu8qx5n 👍👍
@@itsjustanidea Thanks
If it was me i probably would have driven in ATO, i wouldn't want to risk overshooting the platform 😂
This is a great video !
Thank you very much for your nice comment, I’m happy you enjoyed 👍👍
Thank you for sharing this day with us and giving us an insight into your work. I think we're all wannabe train drivers at heart. I found it unexpectedly emotional to watch too and thinking about your next chapter in life. Hope life is treating you well. Happy Retirement sir.
Thank you for your kind words and best wishes. Life is treating me well and although the retirement chapter has been busier than I expected, I’ve been happy so far, thanks 👍👍
Great vid, hope you have a long happy retirement 🎉
Thank you for watching, I’m glad you enjoyed it. That’s exactly what I’m hoping for , a long and happy retirement 🤞🤞👍
Where do you get your train operator licence? if that's what it's called
Thanks for your question, it’s a good one. Yes we have to be licensed to drive a train, however unlike licenses to drive cars, lorries or buses. Even licences to fly planes, you can’t go to a train driving school to get one. Train operating companies have to train their operators . Which in my opinion is why train operators are reasonably well paid, after a very expensive training program the companies don’t want to lose their operators. 👍👍
Great video, congratulations, I wanted to ask if it rains, do you always drive with the ATO inserted?
Thank you for your comment and question. Yes , ATO is rarely affected by the weather 👍👍
What's it like to be a train driver?
Thank you for your question. What’s it like to be a train driver? It was pretty good actually, good enough for me to spend almost 22 years of my life doing it. I never spent any time doing or working on something I couldn’t enjoy or be happy doing.👍👍
Do you reckon the jubilee line will ever be fully automated? I think semi automation with ato works best
By fully automated I think you mean driverless, so no I don’t. 👍
Well done for your service you must have taken me to my grandmothers house which from west to willsden green thank for your service we salute you 🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡
Thank you for your kind comment 👍
How do shifts work on the underground? How often did you work weekends? Sorry if you’ve already answered
Shifts are rostered we worked an average of 36 hours per week, contracted 35 . No voluntary overtime and yes for those that follow the rota a fair amount of time off at weekends 👍👍
I've been watching since the start of the series, and I just wanted to say thank you for your service on the underground and kept London moving! Enjoy your Retirement! 😊👍
Thanks for watching, and for your good wishes. I hope you enjoyed the series and I’m enjoying retirement. Thank you 👍👍
Oh dear!😅 7:51
🤔🤣
@@itsjustanidea you said that you idiot!😡
Yeah! Signal failure! What can we do? 8:48
??👍
Just wait 👍
The driver calls the signals to do the brake test! (Then the driver holds the brake paper manual!) 3:38
👍
What was that noise?🤔 3:59
I think the noise you heard was an audible signal that basically says ready to go👍
Crazy to see the automation not even Japan opt'd to automate the line their busiest line the Yamanote Line is still controlled by the driver however they do have automation in case you fall short of the stop the train will automatically position itself. They have plans to automate that line but that's the only confirmed one. Happy retirement though!
Thanks for your comment and best wishes. Maybe one day I’ll get to Japan and see that👍
Why this train stopped?🤔
Indeed, why? My favourite question 👍
@@itsjustanidea tell me now!😡
@@user-oh8qc6di7m 🤣🤣👍
When do you think the Jubilee line will get new trains. Do you think they’ll be similar to the new stock coming on the Piccadilly?
New trains? I don’t think that will be happening for a good few years. When they come what will they be like? Probably an upgrade on whatever comes before them maybe what the Bakerloo line end up with 👍
The trains only came into service in 1998. Also there was later models built in 2005-2006 too. I recon maybe 2040s perhaps they will be replaced
Signal failure at Wembley Park! So this train will now terminate at North Greenwich! 34:41
Yep,🤣🤣
Was this an early shift? What time did you start
Thanks for your question, yes it was a very early start, 04:45 was our earliest book on time 👍👍
Thanks for the video,happy retirement
Thank you for watching and I appreciate your best wishes 👍👍
Finally, signal problem is fixed!👍
Oh yes, eventually it gets sorted 😊👍
Stanmore to North Greenwich
👍👍
