Levar Burton is single handely the reason I feel in love with storytelling as a kid and a writer now for my own film production. Words can not describe what this man did for me and how much he inspired me. Hell, I didn't even realize how much he did. A well-deserved award to an absolutely GREAT AMAZING MAN.

Her mother is Oriental or Black? Her mother was with her dad at the age of 15. Might have been younger I just know cause I be 43 this year and read it in the magazines.

I’m a middle aged white woman who grew up in a run down city. There were only a few black families in our small city when I grew up and I’m proud to say that my single working mom was friendly with another single mom who was black and her two children, around my age, were wonderful friends to me. I’m glad I also had Levar Burton in my life as a kid. I loved his show as a child and here I am still listening to him. I love his current podcast and listen to it every week.

I heard of the show but never really watched it. I'd see it from time to time watch maybe a few minutes pending the topic then switch to something else as a kid. I had no ideal the impact of the show but great award from the intro to his acceptance speech. Dude's been around for a minute ..

As a white kid who grew up with "Reading Rainbow", I want to say this: So many times, people talk about how important it is for young black children to have black role models to look up to...and that's true. But I think it's just as important for young white kids to have black role models to look up to. And that's what LeVar was for white kids. Because you can't make a racist out of a white kid who grew up watching "Reading Rainbow". It just can't happen.

I was a little white girl and I loved reading rainbow so much I took my head band and would put it around my eyes because I LOVED Levar. I was reading in pre school because of him. By kindergarten I was reading full on books on the bus to school. I think every generation since has suffered not having someone like him.

The man. The myth. The legend. I grew up watching reading rainbow daily while my father would watch Star Trek TNG. I always admired you Levar. You would capture me with the way you would look at me thru that tv and talk to me like we were having a one on one. You are more than deserving of this award. The world is a better place because of you. Congrats and thank you for everything.
