I served as 2nd Mate with SeaLand for years (transatlantic) and chuckled when the wheelsman and captain were gauging the rate of turn by looking aft. My ship also had a forward house similar to Lakers and my AB who sailed on the Lakes also looked aft whenever he was given a rudder order. Its works.

I know it's a year later so I can only hope you see this. My question is, when did you take your river trip on Joyce L? It's cool to see JAW Iglehart working because she's been moored for at least 7-8 yrs at Superior as a cement storage barge. Great video, btw. ✌️🍁

This was taken during the 2004 season. It was pretty cool, as we passed JAW Iglehart everyone on the Joyce L had to go out and wave/yell as the cook on JAW Iglehart used to be the cook on Joyce L.

Yes, it is the USS EDSON. By the way, you can watch the SRMHS KZread Channel video of the "History of the USS EDSON" presentation by Jim Reha from September 2023 at this link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/h6N83M6CaK7MlJc.html

I've watched that viseo a few times . From MAY 1972 until NOV. 1975 I was on the EDSON. In AUG. 2023 I went back to the ship for the first time in almost 48 years. I spent a week living on the ship and having a reunion seeing ship mates that I hadn't seen in a long time.@@srmhs

I have recently come in contact with Don Comtois through a common interest in The Brooks System, which was a company that sold small wooden boat plans about a hundred years ago. I am thoroughly enjoying the luxury of retirement, and Don, you are helping that effort. Nice to "meet" you !

Thank you for the kind words about Don Comtois. He recently stepped down and handed the presidency (after 30 years) of the Saginaw River Marine Historical Society to Don Morin (formerly SRMHS Vice President). Don Comtois will continue as the Society's historian.
