So, last week I saw a film called Conrack which came out in 1974. It stars Jon Voight. He is a teacher who goes to teach a bunch of poor black kids living on an island off the coast of South Carolina. There are many similarities to Dead Poets Society, but the one rip off that rubbed me the wrong way was this particular poem, which Jon Voight recites to his students. Couldn't Peter Weir have been less obvious and picked a different poem?? Don't get me wrong. I love DPS and I know films borrow from films of the past all the time, but this was such a blatant rip off.

I haven't seen Conrack (thanks for the tip), but this poem is quite well-known and the epitome for Carpe Diem in English literature, so I think it is quite normal that it is used in Dead Poets Society.

Just as Frankie finishes paying off Tommy’s debt, he’s hit with news of his daughter Francine’s death from a drug overdose. Something that NO parent should ever have to endure. What’s even more gut wrenching is that Francine was making a name for herself as a singer when she died. She could’ve been a great singer like her father. Still a powerful scene though.

Gosh, that will be quite personal but I watched Dead Poets Society for the first time when I was a 14-year-old middle school kiddo. And it goddamn changed me forever. I remember crying so hard at the end of the movie alone in my room at the attic. I think it wouldn't be an understatement if I said this story has saved me at some point. And not only because I was a teenager who went through very similar tough life experiences at that time. What's the most important, it made me understand and feel poetry on a deeper level, it was this final push that tied me with poetry for probably the rest of my life (as I always was thee literature kid). Now I am in my 20s, writing my own stuff. And after watching this movie again and again through the years, from today's perspective, I can't say it's still as innovative and lifechanging as it was in my eyes back then. But the love and sentiment I have for this story and these characters is eternal. In the end, it's so simple: showing the most valuable truth about our lifes in the most straightforward way. And sometimes when I still see or hear this quote somewhere on the internet, all I can say is: thank you, Peter Weir and Robin Williams, for making me a poet. 🖤

Earlier this year, over a course of 8 months time, I lost a nephew, an older sister (nephew's mother sadly) and if that wasn't enough, my Aussie dog. It hit my family hard but my father took it the hardest especially. When my sister died, I immediately remembered when the real Frankie Valli lost his daughter Francine, very painful. The fact of the matter is that no parent should ever have their child precede them in death. I even got tear-eyed when I saw this scene and it hit close to home for me.

Honetly, this is cinema at it's finest. Such a strong scene filled with passion and truth. These words are so powerfull, not only is Robin williams right, the human race has nothing els to live for but for love, beauty and poetry. But as his words are spoken I can only imagine these words entering my very soul.

I guess it's the relationship between Bud and Deanie which may seem old fashioned to a modern audience enjoying a more open approach to sexuality. Of course, the events in the story happen near a century ago.

As you said, it is a really beautiful film, so I think that it is all right if it deviated from the book. I believe the book also deviated heavily from real life, therefore both the book and the real characters served only as inspiration for a wonderful film.
