Even though this is the partial broadcast of "Gala of Stars 1984", I sure do wish someone will ever upload the Complete Broadcast of Gala of Stars 1984", which first ever aired as part of the conclusion of PBS' Festival '84 Membership Pledge Drive on most PBS stations including my local station: KPBS in San Diego, California, Circa Sunday March 18th, 1984!! TV Worth Watching is TV Worth Paying For!!

Hofmann‘s 2 most suitable Wagner roles were, IMO, Lohengrin & Siegmund but he was no real Heldentenor. He is still in reasonably good form in these selections.

The great Cleo Laine in a definitive version of one of my favorite songs of all: BILL from SHOWBOAT. Well into her 90s now & one of the treasurable artists in my experience. I was fortunate, indeed, to see & hear her LIVE twice.

It’s interesting to revisit these gems 40 years later. Almost everyone sounds wonderful. Some critics and opera mavens came down hard on Jess Thomas and Anna Moffo - ok, they’re both way past their prime, but Thomas manages a creditable Siegmund, and holds the ending high-A where most tenors die. Moffo still has her famous creamy tone and manages her high notes well. Carol Neblett didn’t have a great time as Senta but, other than a few squeezed top notes, she handled a difficult assignment well. A lot of people freaked out when James Morris sang Man of La Mancha, and he even said in an interview that Bonynge at first refused to conduct “this shit.” But he’s fantastic, and the audience certainly agreed.

I find it interesting that Caballe sang the Capuletti aria, as she has in the past sung the aria from Adelson e Salvini, same melody, but in a lower key, because the lead in the opera was a mezzo. This is a wonderful treat
