    I have always wondered -- WHY hasn't anyone made a bagpipe -- with the standard CHROMATIC scale? Wouldn't you love to hear bagpipe solos of "Happy Birthday!" and "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" or other common songs? Perhaps SOMEDAY, somebody will create such a bagpipe. And we shall hear the unique bagpipe version of "Czardas" and "Flight of the Bumblebee." And finally, someone will compose a "Concerto for Bagpipes and Orchestra." With such a chromatic instrument, I'm sure that many more people will take up bagpipe-playing.

    What size of taps did you use for the drone reed seating? I suppose we need to ascertain our individual drone bore internal diameter first? What thread gauge do you recommend? In the UK we use "metric" in general, both course and fine gauge. Being a retired blacksmith I have access to BSF/BSW and several more and also pipe gauge threads (water/gas pipe). I appreciate your advice. Thanks, Ronald.

    Excellent tutorial. Example - Chanter reed at 24" w.c. - Drones in at 22' w.c. - Drones cut out at 28" w.c. That would be easy-medium. Bag pressure kept within 2" w.c. range demonstrates control. No guesswork. Efficient settings.

    Thanks Jori. After 60+ years I've lost my birl to arthritis. these days I substitute grips or other embellishments. If I could start again I'd learn to play a straight fingered birl. I plain wore mine out bending it. Just a thought. added - Strathspeys are played for "the feet of the dancer". Picture that when you play them. 👍

  • @bagpipelessons
    @bagpipelessonsАй бұрын

    Thanks! Sorry to hear about your birl. I've seen zero evidence that musicians who play with proper form wear out their hands. To the contrary, it can maintain dexterity into old age compared to non musicians.

  • @WillMellon

    @@bagpipelessons The joint is swollen with arthritis and is painful to bend so I substitute other embellishments instead. A piper would know but John Q. probably would not. @@bagpipelessons I've been playing Kyo chanters for tone and comfort for years. The shorter reach works for me. I play Kyo drones as well. This is my 3rd set by Murray Huggins and these are 'post-epiphany'. Murray had a revelation. His latest incarnation is all his own and the best I've ever played. His earlier pipes were Henderson based and also fine instruments. The wait, however, is long.

    My 1890's ebony pipes play a modern b-flat by Kyo at 466hz. Big fan of lower pitch. My Kyo pipes run at 476hz or modern band pitch. I can't match either with older chanters.

    Jori, I just received my InTune Mic the other day and LOVE IT! Usint the Braw tuner with it, I was able to quickly tune my drones. Only thing is, you may lose the ability to tune by ear! LOL!

  • @bagpipelessons
    @bagpipelessonsАй бұрын

    Thank you, Phil! My experience is that using a tuner will enhance your ability to tune without it. How? Your ear becomes trained to hear things as in tune. So, the InTune Mic and Braw Tuner will help you tune faster in the short term and help train your ear in the long term. Just like a metronome helps you develop your own internal sense of timing and tempo.
