    The guitar riff seems to be taken from the Quake II soundtrack.

    That seems unlikely considering even the PS1 port of Descent I predates Quake II. Even the other way around seems unlikely given how much more popular Doom and Quake were than Descent. Stranger things certainly have happened and lots of 90s games had similar musical influences so who knows?

    The orientation of the needle is significant, that was the point (!) of these things. With the flat of the spear in the same plane as the groove it is more flexible and therefore quieter. With the flat at a right angle to the groove it is more rigid and at it's loudest. That's a beautiful 102, I had a red one years ago.

    @@pip5528 Me too! We actually played the sequel more than the original. In-fact, we played the second one first. Yes it was a demo at the time, but it was a pretty good demo that was 8 levels long. When we got the full version, the one we got came bundled with the Vertigo expansion. Nowadays I own the whole trilogy from GOG for convenience, but also to run on modern Windows.

  • @pip5528

    Fair criticism but this was shot on my phone and I had considered a kickstand or pop socket or something but that's only useful on a desk. I forgot they also made tripods for smartphones. Lately I've mainly been recording the gramophone miced up and shot with my webcam sitting somewhere but I have not uploaded that on the channel yet. This was also for basic testing purposes and I wanted to show the process as well as separate distances so it didn't exactly warrant the full setup.

    @@pip5528 Sorry, I was just ribbing you a little bit. What kind of suitcase player is that? I have an old (1917) floor model Brunswick-Balke Collander Co. model...I forget the number. This year I hope to remove it's spring cans and take the coiled springs out and clean the old hardened grease off of them, put a new gasket around the reproducer and give the outside of the cabinet a re-finish. It does work now, but it jumps once in a while as the springs try to slip past that old grease that has basically turned into cement.

    Yeah, I figured you were one of the important people to mention since you gave me some repair advice. Don't worry, I will also show you the before and after of the rattle fix. I also just had in-laws over for dinner and got to show off a couple records and the gramophone. They were blown away and wondered how someone even came up with a way to record and play that back. I played the Savoy Hotel Orpheans record for them and realized a soft tone needle was too quiet for listening while talking and gathered in a room so I used what seemed to be a medium tone needle for the B-side. Then I played On Mobile Bay with an approximately loud tone needle for them before we had to stop. I feel like there aren't many Gen Z people who are into 78s and gramophones but I'm one of them.

  • @mrrgstuff
    @mrrgstuff Жыл бұрын

    @Sam Wittsell Thanks 😀👍. Yes, it would be great to see/hear more about the rattle fix. Very smart looking 102. Most are black but yours look to be a green one which is certainly more desirable. I mainly use softtone needles, but yes, gramophones aren't necessarily quite as loud as they appear to be. I read somewhere about a concept of 'false loudness', where your impression is that the gramophone record is very loud, but actually you can easily talk over it, so isn't so loud at all. I guess the brain is tricked by the content of the record 🤔

  • @pip5528
    @pip5528 Жыл бұрын

    @@mrrgstuff I did also measure with the dB meter on my Soundbrenner Core and soft tone needles on most electric records typically range from 70-80 dB from a few feet I have noticed. My wife also complained about hearing the Savoy Hotel Orpheans record from the bathroom with the soft tone needle and the gramophone facing in the opposite direction which is quieter as 30s records go claiming "it's so loud" and I insisted it's not that loud but of course I used the classic trick of shoving cloth into the horn which lowered the volume to 70 dB or less. My Glenn Miller records and The Donkey Serenade / Giannina Mia are particularly loud even with soft tone needles. I do also have extra soft tone needles on the way that I'd love to try and I've gotten into bamboo fiber as well which I tested on Sunny Side Up / Love (Your Magic Spell is Everywhere) which is scratched and noisy to begin with so I'm not terribly worried about it getting damaged even though the general consensus seems to be that bamboo causes less wear but of course records have to be trained overtime and better record condition is ideal for the wedge as well. I noticed the tracking wasn't quite perfect for that first play of the bamboo wedge. It's fairly loud as well, averaging around 80 dB at close range so the "softness" has more to do with timbre than volume. I might also try Burmese Colour Needles if I can get a pack and a sharpener. I would also like to update that I've ordered a Grado 78E so I will have a true mono cartridge to not accentuate the surface noise on the modern equipment so much. Yes, my green 102 is arguably one of the rarer colors and I love the shade of it as well. I do not have the tray but I have little practical use for that anyway. There was a red one that was auctioned with its tray a few weeks prior but I let it slip because it got more expensive than I was willing to pay.
