    Hi....I stumbled upon this video trying to find instructions on how to fill it and glad I found your video. My Mom has a pair of these candles tucked away....gotta be 30 years old. Question, having trouble refilling the butane as it just keeps spraying all over....any tips...suggestions?? Thanks so much!

    Keep the butane and candle perfectly straight. It will spray a bit at first but that’s ok. These make an additional good prep for when you need them. I bow have 4 sets

    if there is no electricty, batteries will deplete and you will have nothing unless you have a solar battery option. this 3 candle heats and give light. it also will heat snow or water to purify. to get 9 hours at the cost of about $3.50 per (3) its hard to compete i think. i appreciate you comment about hanging the candelier too close to the top of anything. this is logical and like that you point it out. your title is click bait and i clicked on it (lol) and learned a little something but in general consider your comments narrow minded as there are so many pluses with this thing even though you are stuck on a few negatives that affect you but probably not others.

    Most eco fans you buy work equally well. As long as they are thermal electric. If you can find a fibreglass wick that would fit the unit it would work fine. Yes just like the video says. After your tank empty’s out, wait a half hour and then dry burn the creosote off the wick

    StUpId title. You fail to qualify your comments are based on putting in a small tent. "Better alternatives...", but another fail as you don't discuss or list those. Although I've owned a several single candle lanterns for decades, brands unknown, I do not own a three candle version. Who would even consider packing a three candle behemoth for small 'tent' camping anyway? Bottom line poor rationale for "Don't buy".

    There is nothing quite like not understanding the basics.. Back feeding like this is OK for those who fully understand what is happening and then choosing not to do it. Also back feeding like this will only provide 110v on one row of breakers.. My advice watch this video and learn how not to do it..

    I like it and find it fun to have around. I also like old oil lamps, if you build a sturdy wood box to set them in as a safeguard against them being knocked over... Oil lamps to bulky to camp/hike with, great for a base camp though... The UCO has three candles but you do not have to use them all lit you have options...

  • @hogtale1155
    @hogtale11558 ай бұрын

    I’ve used my uco 3 candle lantern for over 30 years. On the side of mount Baker and various other places in a 4 season tents Sierra Designs and North Face. Both have strap loops in the main tent body ceiling. To safely use any candle lantern in a tent simply use a lightweight hardware chain 18in. long and a couple S hooks. Connect the chain with (1) S hook to tent body and the other end to the lantern. Light and enjoy a safe warm tent. My handle is such that I remove one side of the hanger and slip the hanger through the chain and the replace the end on the handle back into the lantern body. Now you only need (1) S hook.

    First thanks for doing the experiment, have you thought of adding a 2000 watt dual fuel generator to your kit, first they are relatively cheap, and lite weight, second in a condo situation storing propane is reasonably safe, and in an emergency situation still findable, as everyone runs to liquid gas. That and your solar panels depending on how much space you have should keep you well stocked with electricity. My thoughts on battery packs are you need a minimum size of 2000 watts, and at lest two of them, three would be better. On the generator, under no circumstances use it on your balcony, but you could take your packs down to an outside area to charge them, and then secure them, and the generator. If you are in a garden style condo see if you can get access to the roof, for more solar, but only up to what your pack solar change controller will take, if the board would allow it, or consider lobbying the board to add solar to the condo’s as an independent power source. On cooking get a camp stove two burn, with oven, they will run off propane, and are Relatively cheap. You need enough power, to run you refrigerator, a box freezer, and your furnace in the winter, lighting can be done with solar and battery powered led lanterns, your battery packs should provide more than enough power to run your other electronics. Build your other systems around AA batteries with adapters to D cells, as they are findable in a crisis, and cheap to buy in bulk. Condos are tricky, but doable in an emergency situations, my Theory on where to live in a condo is, stay off the first through third floors, four, five, and six floors are the Sweet spot, high enough off the ground for security, but not too high to walk up or down with gear, and supplies if the power is out, don’t forget water containers, Municipal water systems are mostly gravity, fed, with the aid of pumps, so they should work in an emergency, but it pays to have back up.

  • @mikecohen2400
    @mikecohen24009 ай бұрын

    Power is always going to be an issue in an emergency, and while solar is good, how you can deploy it becomes the main issue, in your case, you don’t have roof access, your next option would be a 2000 watt or larger dual fuel generator, small enough to move, two types of fuel, so you can get at least one in a crisis, giving you the ability to charge your battery packs off site. I like at least 2000 watt packs, two of them, they should allow you to run anything in your condo, but the AC units. In normal times people will look at you with solar panels on your balcony, in a power out emergency, they will be trying it too. If you building has a flat roof,you might want to talk to the condo board about roof access, or go with at least a 350 watt panel on the balcony.

    Unfortunately there is no way to use roof. I did use a 500 watt wind turbine and it was giving me an average of 380 watts. As long as I’m in this location having one of them might be a great back up

    Heres the easy and safer way to wire your 120v generator into your panel and run half your breakers on 120volt just make sure all your 240 volt breakers are off. So for example I know a guy to have a 3600kw 120 volt generator with 30 amp output plug. so this guy I know then made the sucide cord bypass by bying expensive complete contained insulated plug hit one end always stay in generator and other end is wired to the bottom right in the 200 amp panel in the house. via a single 30amp 120 volt breaker. He then rearanged all his 120volt breakers in a manner so that half the panel works so imagine looking inside the panel at the 2 columbs of breakers so if the bottom right 30 am 120 volt from generator is on it will skip and not feed power to the next breaker up in line and then power the one after that and this alternates all the way up the panel and down the other side. being that the house has nautural gas furnace the 120v blower can be powered. As long as you maintain a low load on the circuits your good to go no running coffe makers and microwave at same time, Make sure all your 240volt breakers are off when doing this otherwise you will half fase your appliance like dryer and oven and possibly burn your house down or for sure destroy your wirring if those 240 volt devices are not off during generator use. The other draw back is you might have to move breaker positions and wires for what powers what to ensure you get power to the rooms you want it in. In an emergency outage that cAN last for days you really dont need all your loutlets and house lights to function. Choose wisely. I know a guy who has 3 main disconeects on property that can all be turned off for tripple safety. If you have a garage attached or not but it is close to house panel concider running the generator in the garage and bolt on a short run of good iron pipe to the muffler flange and run it out under the garage door keeping door cracked open a bit and installing a bolt latch for security of door for that height this way you keep your generator safe and more stealthy when in use. You could always just drill 1" diameter hole through garage wall footing insulate wwrap your pipe for heat and vent it out that way so you can keep your garage door shut completely. It wont run out of oxogen in a decent sized garage space. Keep a carbon monoxide detector or 2 mounted or placed low to the ground maybe one in the garage and one just inside the house for safety. I see this as an exelent way to power up the house in emergency or appocolipse. keep the windows and blinds shut and outside lighting off so no one driving by can easly tell you got power, or just live in the sticks like me, I mean " like this guy I know of ".

    Hey folks, I'm a little late to the party but, I wanted to offer a quick tip. This is not ideal for a car emergency kit unless you only put it in the car during cooler weather. The candles will melt in summer heat unless you store it in an insulated container. I found that out the hard way after a camping trip where I didn't offload for a couple days.
