I think that Dan Rather's segments were pre-recorded. The airtime at 6:30 p.m. EDT would've been 1:30 a.m. in West Germany. The dusk sky can be seen in the background plus there is too much foot traffic in the background to have been 1:30 a.m. I assume that Bob Schieffer co-anchored live from Washington, D.C.

That is probable. There was no reason to have the Rather segments presented live. They do it today and it's pointless to have the correspondent up in the middle of the night with no new news.

Thank you for uploading this - what a special report. It would be very hard to put the genie back, but with overwhelming force they did! It’s interesting to watch this and the CNN coverage side-by-side, as both networks are trying the same stalling tactics at the same time. Putting the Chinese officials live on air, asking for written notice of the demand to cease transmission, etc. The only difference is that CNN was able to keep transmitting direct from Tiananmen Square until the plug was pulled.

What's especially impressive about this "CBS News Special Report" is that it was transmitted directly from an overseas location, without an "anchor" in New York or Washington, D.C. providing context. Keep in mind that although it was nearly 10:00 p.m. EDT (9:00 p.m. CDT) on May 19, the time was around 10:00 a.m. on May 20 in Beijing.

I think what people tend to forget is that a lot of the frustration that came with these protests were the implementation of liberalization by Deng and vast amounts of people left behind as a result. The Internationale was sung at these protests themselves. Even if arguably for many people, this liberalization gave rise to living standards of which the pace starting from communist rule was slowing down.

The "Deep State" seems to manifest during Republican Administrations... Is there any connection between Republicans and "American" interests overseas ? Rather a superfluous question, isn't it... Hard to not conclude that the ownership of the United States, it's Government, Armed Forces, it's citizens, system of "Justice" is held in the hands of a few ruthless families hiding behind Corporate facades. Citizens United and the exposure of blatant corruption within the "Supreme" Court has done them no favors in regard to anonymity. The "Land of the Free" ?
