The REAL reason for Linux being so un-popular on desktop machines is lack of good usefull software (A-grade software, free or proprietary, open or closed source - users worldwide don't care that much about this philosophy). Why there is not a lot more software developed for Linux OS? Well, it must be hard (read expensive / time consuming) to develop software for Linux when Linux means so many sorts of distros (is it for Debian? or for Red Hat? or for Arch? ... and so on). With software developed for Windows - is simple - you just have to write code for Windows OS! And 3rd reason... when ~ 80% of the total amount of machines sold wordwide came with Windows preinstalled, who's not going to write software for Windows with that marketshare? 73% of software marketshare is software for Windows - 2% (!!!) is software made for Linux. Kind of hard (read impossible) to beat that... :(

Pre-installs are never going to become popular with so many distros to choose from. Widespread third party software support won't happen for the same reason. It's great to have so many options if you're a consumer, but it's a nightmare for producers. It's just easier for companies to produce for one centralized garbage OS like Windows. Easy equates to cost-effective, and most producers won't look past that. The Linux world doesn't have shareholders. The rest of the world does.

I've tried a couple distros because I'm very interested in Linux systems but the software/game compatibility is such a massive turn off for me. Sure, you can get some things working with a little bit of tinkering but some programs just out right don't work on Linux. With Windows I don't have to do any of that tinkering or looking for alternatives because it works out of the box. I hope that one day Linux becomes big enough that companies have to make Linux compatible software and I'm able to do the switch to Linux from Windows. If I ever get a second computer I would love to use Linux on it, but having Linux as a daily driver is just inconvenient at the moment.

I re-watch this every few years. Not for the Nvidia part, though it's a nice bonus, but for everything else. It makes me realize how amazing time we've been living technologically. Coursera and different open learning platforms are going strong, Raspberry Pl is a big deal these days, and gaming is making a major push on Linux. For the first time ever, I have been able to daily drive a linux PC with very little compromise. Even Linus himself is a bit nicer these days 😄 This is my first time watching this since moving to IT, so now I have a new perspective on all this. I would love to have a guest lecture from Linus, but this is pretty good too.

We need good laws to protect companies from dominant companies. The first step, banning Android on pre-installed mobiles. The same thing, the prohibition of installation on computers - everyone should choose what he wants when buying. Well, Android is more of a Java OS than anything else. Yes, there is a linux kernel underneath there but as far as anything the user interacts with is an environment built on top of Dalvik or whatever they call their JVM. But yeah, for just linux as a desktop OS, it's not ideal because it's a Unix clone. If you study the architectural details of Unix (the way it does I/O etc) you can see it's really suboptimal for what makes for a good clean OS for a personal computer.

Yea it still hasn't happened.. but as someone else here mentioned: lack of professional software. I'm trying Linux Mint on my desktop and currently I'm really struggling to get fusion 360 running properly. It feels like a chicken and egg problem, not enough people use Linux so developers don't make their software for it, and PC manufacturers won't preinstall Linux because not everyone will be able to run the software they need.

I think that everyone should be made aware of what coding CAN do. Just knowing that there is this magic tool which can save everyone hundreds if not thousands of hours of their life is valuable. If you see a problem that requires a lot of manual work on a computer, it can most likely be automated. But many don't know that are waste their time doing unnecessary work.

I started doing tech support for Windows 95 when it was new. I continued supporting 9x through about the year 2000. I have toyed around with Ubuntu and a few tiny Linux versions. One of the barriers that I faced was the user interface. The other barrier was permissions. Maybe if I wasn't trying to do technical things the permissions wouldn't have been an issue. By this point, we have generations of people who have become accustomed to the Windows interface. We also have people who have become accustomed to Apple's interface. Getting a polished GUI that is intuitive and functional seems to be one of the sticking points. It has been a few years since I tried Gnome. (if I remember correctly, that was standard on Ubuntu last time I tried it.) I tried xfce or KD something and it always felt like _I_ was just trying to recreate the Windows experience because it works for me. I felt like Gnome was trying to recreate the Apple experience. At least with chromebooks, there is a common interface, but I don't really think it counts because it's a very locked down operating system. Unless I have misunderstood, a Chromebook is intended to be almost a dummy terminal to access web apps. I'm sure there are use cases for this, but I can't imagine it being the go-to for a home computer.
